For anyone looking to make an affordable, spill proof, slip proof, gaming mat for their miniatures that looks awesome, here's what you need:
Easy Game Mat ($9)
1. Black Utility Fabric (3' x 3' or 2' x 2') - Found at any arts and crafts store that sells fabric (The down side to utility fabric is that it should not be folded, only rolled up. It can also be scratched if you intentionally try to scratch it, but its cheap to replace).
2. Small Can of White Spray Paint (Spay some on your finger and flick your finger to create an instant star field. Use more colors for nebulae and other star clusters. You will need to wipe it down with a damp cloth once it dries to remove access paint particles).
Easy Asteroids ($10)
1. Foam Balls (3" or 2.5") - Found at any crafts store (Cut with a knife and mash with your fingers to form instant asteroids)
2. Acrylic Paint (Good Base Color is a Dark Mud Brown)
3. Acrylic Paint (Good Accent Color is a Dark Grey)
4. Small Sponge Brush (Use this to completely paint you asteroids in a base color, and then accent the edges in a secondary color).
5. X-Wing Stands - I just use my plastic X-Wing stands for my asteroids, but you could also use a small cork and some wire to make a stand or buy them online.
