Re-roll a re-roll

By ShrineDawg, in X-Wing Rules Questions

A search on 're-roll' showed nothing relevant so:

Basically, can you re-roll a re-roll? I'm from 40k where such things are expressly forbidden.

scenario:

Pilot has predator and a Target lock on the target.

Roll 4 attack dice, all blanks.

Re-roll all dice via Target lock. 3 hits and one blank.

Re-roll blank via Predator.

Legal?

No, there is a note at the bottom of pg 12 of the rulebook, Important is in red.

important: When a die is changed or rerolled, ignore its original result and apply only the new result. This new result may be modified by other effects; however, a die that has already been rerolled cannot be rerolled again during this attack.

Blue sidebar, page 12. Much the same as GW's rules (any of them), re-roll only once.

So, roll all blanks, reroll via target lock, 2 hits two focus, spend focus is legal. But rerolling the two focus via predator or whatever other abilities is not.

Correct!

Also note the order in which these things occur:

Attacker rolls
Defender modifies (for instance, sensor jammer turns a hit to a focus)

Attacker modifies (and can change that focus to a hit via a focus, but not reroll it via target lock which is stated on the card)

Likewise,

Defender rolls
Attacker modifies

Defender re-modifies

EDIT derp, you are correct that Sensor Jammer explicitly forbids rerolling the modified dice, but I still think my example is useful to demonstrate how dice modification works, so I'm leaving the rest of my post

In the case of Sensor Jammer specifically, the attacker can reroll it via, say, Target Lock; Sensor Jammer isn't a reroll, it's a modification.

An example that matches your case would be R7 Astromech.

- Attacker rolls (hit, hit, blank)

- defender with R7 spends his target lock on the attacker to force them to reroll the two hits, which are now (blank, eye) for a total result of (blank, eye, blank).

The Attacker can now spend a Target Lock they have to reroll the original third blank result, as well as spend a focus token to change that middle eye to a hit, but spending a Target Lock cannot reroll the new blank or eye results.

But like bananna said, the sensor jammer card itself specifically forbids that die being rerolled.

Yeah, after I posted and then reread what he'd said it clicked for me. Sensor Jammer though helpfully specifically forbids rerolls in its text, I figure my example is still useful for demonstrating 'no rerolls of rerolls' that the OP is asking about though.

I am from 40k also, and no just like in that, you cannot re-roll a re-roll.

I, however, never played 40k (love to watch it though, big fan of the scenery) so the reroll rules only became evident to me fairly recently. Just a few weeks ago, really, and I've been playing since October, ish?

This is a much better example of the topic. I completely forgot about that droid.
