Han + Gunner

By Bikeanimal, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Apologies if this topic has already been covered (I didn't see it on a brief search) but I am in need of clarification regarding Han's Pilot Ability (2 questions specifically);

1) Can Han use his pilot ability to allow a re-roll of both HIS primary weapon attack AND that of Gunner in the same turn?

2) Can Han use his pilot ability to re-roll the Gunner attack when the "Blinded Pilot" critical hit card is in play?

If you're interested the specific scenario was this;

The falcon (with gunner) is surrounded by 1 interceptor (range 1 with an evade token) and 2 tie fighters (range 3, no tokens). The falcon only has 4 hull points left but shoots first;

Han's first 4 dice shot gives 1 hit for Han, he uses Han's pilot ability to re-roll, this time getting 2 hits. Interceptor rolls 2 evades so no hits therefore "Gunner" triggers. Gunner's shot gives 2 hits, he uses Han's pilot ability on the gunner's shot and gets 3 hits and 1 crit. The interceptor rolls 1 evade (plus the evade token leaving 1 hit and 1 crit - which turned out to be "Direct Hit" and one dead interceptor) - so 4 bites at the cherry - I read the "once per opportunity" ruling in the latest FAQ as Han only allowing 1 re-roll for the attack not 2.

In response the tie fighters manage to land a crit hit on the Falcon, "Blinded pilot". In the next turn my opponent rolls no dice "which is a missed attack", Gunner therefore triggers so he shoots. With only the 1 hit he uses Han's pilot ability to re-roll this gunner attack, despite Han (the pilot) being blinded. The outcome of this second attack was another dead tie... Boo hiss... This second situation seems more "against the spirit" of the rules than anything else in my book...

1)Han's pilot ability triggers on attack, and is not limited to number of times per turn. Since Gunner actually causes a second attack, Han ability triggers for both the first attack, and the second attack caused by Gunner. This is 2 attacks, so it is 2 different opportunities, so he can use his ability both times. (note: this is why Han with Gunner upgrade is so popular.)

2) Blinded Pilot stats that the next time you attack, you roll no dice. So the next time Han attacks, he rolls no dice and flips Blinded Pilot face down. Since he attacked and missed, Gunner triggers, Han rolls dice like normal, since he no longer has the Blinded Pilot crit, and he can use his ability to reroll those dice.

Bugger! OK Cool cheers Mithmyrr. Another combo to be weary of... :-/

Just double checking.

All those times Han retooled dice, he was rerolling ALL the dice in the attack, right? You description wasn't 100% clear and I found it a little surprising that out of 3 rerolls he got such significantly better rolls each time.

Yep when using Han's ability, you have to reroll all of your attack dice except for the ones that the defender has already forced you to modify or reroll (R7 Astromech, Sensor Jammer, Ibitsam are examples of when the defender can force the attacker to reroll/modify their dice).

1. Yes.

2. "What Blinded Pilot card?" as that would get turned over with the first attack allow dice to fall for the Gunner.

Incidentally, Han's ability CAN be used when he has Blinded Pilot face up. There's just that little issue where rerolling no dice really isn't going to do a lot of good.

Yep he was re rolling all dice each time, the jammy sod. And unfortunately not unusual dice rolling on his side. The unusual thing was so few hits on his first rolls (he must've been a saint in a previous life).

Yeah sensor jammer could be a good call tho, cheers:-)

Ibtisam is not an example of when a defender can force the attacker to reroll/modify the attackers dice.

Her ability reads: When attacking or defending, if you have at least one stress token, you may reroll 1 of your dice.
