I don't really view engaged as a Range but as a condition. Lunging distance, if it needs a phrase.
Can a brawl or melee attack be aimed?
If you want a good real life example you can use two things. Load any video from youtube involving pool. Please tell me how it is that those people create a chain reaction that results in a ball sinking into a pocket without 'aiming' first. This is an example of a melee attack that turns into a ranged attack. Just an observation. Second and this one is simpler fold up a paper football. Then use your fingers and thumbs to balance and flick it at another player. Another example of a melee attack turning into a ranged attack. However, if you do not aim the football and your finger appropriately you miss. But these are examples of melee attacks making things into ranged attacks technically what about a melee attack being 'aimed'. Well you may look at Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode 1 driving his lightsaber into the blast doors and twisting. Now why not simply spin it in a big circle and cut your way in. I think he was going for more of an intimidation action there but it is viable. Or again Episode one where Maul uses his hilt to bash Qui-Gon in the face which would take a bit of aiming as it was in the middle of a duel or for that matter that finishing stab. Well, we are in the Rebellion era all that prequel stuff doesn't count. Okay so Obiwan taking that guys hand off in Episode 4 or Vader in Episode 5. The Wampa in Episode 5 went for an aimed shot at the Tauntaun when it went for the throat. Episode 6 had ewoks using lots of melee weapons to bash and beat stormtroopers with. You have the AT-STs getting squashed between two logs or taken out by rolling logs. Again examples of 'aimed' or timed melee attacks. Hope it helps.
@Blasted.
Your Black Hole video clip has destroyed my memory of that movie. My youthful self had remembered that movie as a very cool, very good, serious flick. It was kinda like watching an old Battlestar Galactica episode again and laughing at it while ruining my memories of that show being so good.

I don't have problems with aiming in melee.
You can either go guarded stance or aim. Double aim means you accept a few superficial blows (strain) to go on offense.
The dedicated aiming with setback(s) would be something like pinning an opponent, or knocking the knife from his hand, or maneuvering him closer to the edge of the plattform.
Melee combat is a pretty good example of the standard rules for dice rolling. Add setbacks and boosts in correlation to what the player announces he tries to do.
I punsh him - standard roll.
Choke hold - two setbacks, upgrade (depending on difference in combat skill and possibly brawn)
Throw the guy in a dark hood over the railing down the bottomless pit before he kills the son you thought was dead but recently reconnected with lightnings? - priceless.
Depending on how creative you get, melee coudl be dull or fun. I like to add additional actions and maneuvers, like "disarm" "throws" "assists" etc to spice it up.
The necrothreading is strong with this one. ![]()
Saddly @2P51 they did not add Helicopter Arms to the martial artist tree. Real shame if you ask me.
