SURVIVE! A fun game variant.

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

I know the DMs out there will appreciate this.

What you do is simple. You are essentially running a game for a friend. have them play Rebels, and tell them they can have 3 or 4 ships (depending on what you want to have them do). They can upgrade them however they want, the sky is the limit.

Then you simply fly them against wave after wave of TIEs, using about 4-8 on the mat at any one time. Once they shoot down an entire wave, give them a turn to reform and then have more waves fly in. You'd probably want to designate a zone or zones where they'll come in from. Every few waves, throw in a named Pilot, perhaps with some upgrade like Squad Leader.

Basically the Endurance matches from Rogue Leader. See how long your friend can survive the onslaught!

R2-D2 would be really powerful here. Luckily the opponent could only field one of them...

Even more fun maybe is to roll a D4 to determine which table edge the new ties come in from.

I think it would be really fun to give each rebel one ship. Have 3-4 players working together against the disciplined might of the Empire.

Add some Squints and Dupes as well. :P

That said, they should probably get Torpedo batteries, or regen them between waves.

You could do the reverse and start throwing Z-95s at an Imperial player, too.

Oooh, many good ideas. The best part is, since this is a seed idea thread, there's no wrong answer! If you don't like an idea you just don't implement it!

Love it. Perhaps, as opposed to wave after wave of TIEs, have the Imp player get a point limit that steadily increases. Maybe start at 50/75, and increase by 25 every round.

It's the Kobayashi Maru for Star Wars.

I'd do A-Wings. Or maybe even X-Wings 2 at a time. What we really need is a point range. Say 48 points of unmodified nameless ships in a wave. Maybe 60 with a named pilot every once in a while as a boss round.

You could set it up like a tiered dungeon in many video games. Every wave gets a few more points. Every fifth wave has a Mini Boss. 10th is just one big boss (which will work better when the Imps get their big ships). After ten maybe get some upgrades or add an extra ship?

Definitely going to have to try this sometime.

I was thinking the same thing, but using a scatter die from GW!

Building on the tiered dungeon idea, you could have repairs or boosts available when flown through. Think of these like health packs or the like.

Building on this, you could start with a base rookie X-Wing and add PS, torps, droids, or even other ship types based on your flying. Maybe just place the card on the playmat; when it is touched by a rebel ships base give them the card. This would really help reward precise piloting and help offer additional strategies.

Both work just fine my Excellent Fellow Winger!

Yeah that's kinda what I'm thinking. The only thing is that some people keep saying "imperial player" but really it's not two opposed players, it's a DM running something fun. So the point isn't to be fair for the Imperials. Now if you were talking about an Imperial Endurance game that makes sense, because their ships weren't meant to be 'durable' so much as 'lucky'.

Cool concept, and I especially like the ideas of randomized starting point and increasing numbers for the Empire. There should be a bouns for each 1-2 waves the Rebels survive, like regaining 1 shield per ship.

Yeah. I was thinking every few rounds, you could put something on the board that must be flown through. Like an obstacle, but beneficial in some way. Again, it would be more "gamey" and not so much simulationist, something like in Rogue Leader. Shield recharges, secondary weapon refills, maybe something that removes one permanent crit effect that you've been saddled with.

The suggestion posed so far that I like the most is having multiple rebel players and making them work together. If you don't have enough people, then maybe you could give each person a wing man. One named Pilot for their own, and one low PS generic of their same ship. Two players doing that would be great. You could have something like Ibtisam and a Blue Squadron and Wedge Antilles and a Rookie Pilot, and all their upgrades. Then just keep playing.

Also maybe you could put a red Target Lock token on the board, and if they fly through it they acquire a free TL on a ship in range.

I saw the title and somehow thought "Zombie FFA" where one player starts as the zombie and "infects" other ships by killing them.

That sounds like The Flood from Halo...

I love this idea and may steal it. Here is how I would do it, you start with a standard 96 points of either ties or head hunters, but no upgrades allowed. As the dm I would come at you with a 50 point squad (in waves as stated) then when you kill a ship and roll an attack die, if you roll a blank it's nothing, a eye allows you to add any viable upgrade to the ship that made the kill, if you roll a hit you can either take any upgrade for that ship or promote the pilot up to the next lowest Point value pilot (an academy pilot would become an obsideon, and so forth. If you land a crit you can do one of 2 things, you can trade your tie/headhunter that made the kill in for any other generic small ship, or you can have an additional new ship at lowest value.

The PC game xwing vs tie fighter had a similar mode where you started out with a ship of your choice and defeat each wave and they would be different ship all the way up to star destroyer. You can take one loaded up ship have them face each ship in game all the way up to the tantive Give them a few re spawns see how far they make it.
