Focus, Focus, Focus

By Roland19, in X-Wing

All - here is my first post on these forums. I have been thinking about a focus themed build. Here it is - please comment:

Kyle Katarn (HWK), Moldy Crow, Recon Specialist, Blaster Turret (31)

Garven Dreis, R5-P9, Adv. PT (35)

Tarn Mison, R2-D6, Deadeye, Adv PT (31)

Total 97 points.

My thinking is this for game play:

Turn 1 - Activation: TM takes Focus, GD takes TL (if range), KK takes Foc

Combat: KK assigns a Foc to GD, GD fires (primary or APT if range) spends a Foc and assigns a Foc to KK, KK fires BT (Spends FOC, Recon spec assigns 1 Focus to KK), TM fires APT or primary uses Focus instead of TL if firing APT.

Turn 2 - KK has kept 1 focus, Activation: TM takes Foc, GD takes Foc (or TL if has opportunity to fire APT this turn), KK takes Focus

Combat: KK assigns a FOC to GD if firing APT this round or TM if he is firing APT this round

GD fire APT or Primary, spend FOC - assign 1 foc to KK (or TM if needed for defense, or save to recover shields if needed using R5-P9)

KK Fires BT - spending a focus and gains a focus back (Recon Spec)

Tm fires primary or APT (if not fired APT yet)

KK still has 2 focus at the end of the round

Repeat the theme for subsequent turns. This group would need to stay tight and would also need to get into close range pretty quickly to unleash the firepower of the APT's.

Thoughts and comments?

Well, first off, APT + Deadeye are.. just awful.
Tarn + Deadeye is a waste of pilot ability as well.

I would try less ordnance.

Kyle garven is great, but Tarn needs R7 and doesn't benefit much from focus passing. You should try to have 4 ships with Kyle and Garven included, not 3.

Can you elaborate constructively on your first comment? Deadeye is one point and with KK and GD throughing off focus allows more opportunities for firing the APT. I really only took Tarn since he was the lowest point xw that would allow R2-D6. I agree is wasting the ability.

Part of it being Advanced Proton Torps just aren't very good.

While perhaps not the best EPT, I assume OP is using it to mitigate Tarn's relatively low pilot skill. I think the list is very dependent on getting range 1 for those torpedoes with no real means to adjust your range. The flood of focus tokens will definitely improve your survivability (provided no wild Jaxes appear), but any list with a lot of maneuverability will be problematic.

You're also putting a lot into three 5-health ships that only have two defense dice to protect them. They're going to get focused pretty quickly. If Garven goes down in a turn, do you think your build would be able to recover from it?

Though a question on Garven and R5-P9. FFG had already ruled that he can spend the focus on attacks, even if he's not modifying dice. Would he also be able to spend it at the end of the combat phase even if his shields are full, in order to pass it to Kyle? Could be a good way to build Kyle's focus stack even faster.

Thanks for the comments! I was trying too hard to force this list built around KK and GD. See what I did there? :D I'll play around with it a bit more.

I do like the concept of Moldy Kyle + Garven. What about:

Kyle + Recon Specialist + Blaster Turret + Moldy Crow

Garven

Rookie Pilot x2

99 points

Kyle gives Garven a focus every turn, who then gives it to a rookie. You'll basically have 4 attack 3 shots every turn, 2 of which will be TL+Focus. Kyle is the big target but if your opponent focuses on Kyle, they'll be eating a good amount of fire power every turn. You can also fly in a wedge and keep Kyle behind, forcing your opponent to get through your X's.

I like it. I'll give it a try in my next game and post how it goes.
