Melee Weapon Question

By tarrenel, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

What is the nastiest melee weapon you can put together besides a light saber for a marauder?

Is it better to use a two handed weapon or two one handed weapons?

Depends on what you're going for, but the Vibro-axe is a popular choice.

Also depends on what you are going for. The two handed weapon with be a smidge easier to use, but a pair of weapons will open you up for multiple hits on the target, possibly doing a higher cumulative damage.

For what it's worth this system tends to work better with more balanced high-concept character over crunch oriented min/maxed murderbots. XP is awarded for story progress and character motivations, not kills. So talking your way past a guard and neutralizing the guard will yield the exact same rewards. So have fun with it, you'll be happier in the long run.

Any vibro weapon, ryyk blade with mono-edged.

Although Fists can be made very effective if your use pressure points

Damage wise dual weapons are normally better, but for ramping crits to instant death levels two handers.

Personal preference really.

Nastiest is too subjective. Force Pike imo since you can target Strain threshold and that tends to be lower than Wounds on targets across the board. If a scenario calls for capturing a target alive it can be handy to have an option of doing Strain with a Melee weapon without needing the Stunning Blow Talent.

I'd call the force pike more useful than nasty, its one of my go-to weapons, because other points 2P51 made.

You can also mono edge it to reach crit 1, which is nice.

Depends on what you mean by "nasty"

Straight up physical damage+crits? Hard to beat an upgraded Vibro-ax. You can get up to crit1, with superior granting you 1 automatic advantage, vicious 4, and pierce 4. The Vibro-greatsword in DC is close behind it though

My conception of the Force Pike is that it uses a bludgeoning tip rather than a cutting edge. The book doesn't describe it as having a blade.

In my game I'd restrict the Mono-Molecular Edge to weapons which actually have a blade, as per its description.

That view means that the Force Pike would qualify for the Weighted Head attachment. If so, your interpretation would actually make the Force Pike more dangerous once it has the Concussive 1 mod.

I'd agree it's more of a bludgeoning weapon. You could still slap Superior on it and between that and Weighted Head get it to +6 base damage potentially. If you spec outside Marauder and get some Jury Rigged and Tinkerer you can really turn up the heat with it. Drop the crit rating to 1 or bump the damage up to base +7. Skip the Superior and instead Tinker it to add an HP and slap a Balanced Hilt on it.

If you're allowing Weighted Head and you have Jury Rigged, I'd suggest lowering the activation cost on Concussive 1 down to 1. Unless the enemy has Hard Headed, you can effectively strip their actions away with ease.

I play a marauder and I play him very differently then most would think. I bought a vibro sword and a riot shield, cross trained into bounty hunter gadeteer for jerry rigged and armor master then went into body guard for the protection talents

I still do lots of damage with the vibro sword (not even close to the blaster rile wielding assassin) but by remaining in guarded stance all other nps are suffering massive black dice to all roles against me. and when they do hit me I have a large soak value where it doesn't bother me.

There are many other ways to play a marauder, I chose a much more defensive role and I can protect my allies. this way in cityscapes, snipers don't make me completely useless.

not to mention riot shield have disorient is very useful.
