Super (expensive) Tycho?

By FatherTurin, in X-Wing

So I have always loved A-Wings, from the movies, toys, games, everything. I am thus understandably excited about the upcoming Rebel Aces pack. It got me to thinking about how effective a totally kitted out Tycho would be:

Tycho Celchu

A-Wing Test Pilot, PTL, Expert Handling, Stealth Device, Chardaan Refit or Proton Rockets

32 or 37 points

Obviously he is flexible and can get pretty much anywhere on the table he wants to be, and Boost/Barrel Roll seems like on paper it would let him even stay on Echo's tail.

My question is; is dropping 1/3 or more of your squad points on a fragile 2 attack ship just way too much? How could something like this work into a list? Maybe along with some generic X-Wings to provide punch while Tycho runs folks on a merry chase across the board?

Tycho, Test Pilot, Outmanuever, Push The Limit, Homing Missiles, Shield Upgrade

PtL + VI (+ Refit) and now Tycho has a chance at chasing down named Phantoms at PS10. 28 points. Don't waste any more points on Stealth Device etc.

The only one thing to be careful with when you use PTL and Expert Handling, is the order of actions. Push the Limit allows a second action listed in your action bar, Expert Handling does not go into your action bar. So, Tycho could never boost then roll, he could only ever roll then boost. It's subtle, but it can be a big deal, and something to be aware of.

I wonder if you added PTL and Expert Handling to a Green squadron Test Pilot, could the green roll, take stress, then PTL and take a second stress? Can you perform a second PTL action if you have stress? It says you perform a free action, then take a stress, but if you already have one from Expert Handling....?

Tycho, Test Pilot, PTL, Daredevil or Predator, Shield Upgrade, and either rockets or Chaardon.

Daredevil allows him to pull a Turn-Boost combo. Paired with his 1-turn, he'll end up facing almost directly behind his starting position. Vader and Soontir can't even do that. He's almost up there with Echo for slipperiness.

Predator would allow him to take Evade actions instead of Target Locks, while keeping a reroll.

On a pilot other than Tycho, you can't perform any action while stressed, so the answer to your question is no, after a a barrel roll you can't PTL with a Green Squad pilot

Tycho, Test Pilot, Chardaan, PTL, Daredevil is a beast of a ship.

A beast that lacks teeth, but nonetheless, a really fun ship to fly

I kind of love this idea... Although it seems like initiative will play a big part in dealing with the seemingly popular Echo with VI.

What would you pair him up with for a more balanced list? Also, I have 3 A-Wings, will probably get 2 aces packs so I'm looking at 5. Any good A-Wing only lists out there? Or is all that 2 attack too hard to get around?

I'm also a huge fan of A-wings. PTL + Expert Handling was not as effective as I'd hoped, but PTL + Daredevil was out-freakin'-standing...

Also, any thoughts on using 2 Green Squadrons with PTL and Wingman as a flanking force?

With refit that's 44 points for a pair that can clear their own stress without green moves.

I'd like to run this:

Tycho / test pilot / PTL / Daredevil / Hull Upgrade / proton rocket

2x GSP / test pilot / PTL / Outmaneuver / Hull Upgrade / proton rocket

Will it be super effective? Couldn't say. Fun as all hell, though...

A Tycho/Test/PTL/DD/PR build comes to 35 points. That leaves 65 points, which is a Red and two Rookies, or one rookie and a Swarm Tactics Cracken. Or two Blues and a Rookie. Lots of room to play there.

I agree with you. I had just never thought though it. I was pondering out loud.

Daredevil, outmanuever, expert handling are all fine choices for that second ept, but you need to react to the meta, which means right now it has to be VI. Pretty much what juggler said, though i think proton rockets could be worth considering. When you do catch that phantom at range 1 its pretty much over for them in one blow. Could go either way on rockets/refit. There is no point in giving him homing missle like someone mentioned for 2 more pts than even the rockets.

I would play one of those other talents if wave 5 were out and HLC outriders were making phantoms less common in the meta than they are now.
