Cold Monsters

By Ringskipper, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Does anyone else feel like we need more Cold trait monsters? In total (including Conversion Kit and all upcoming expansions), we only have 3...

Granted, we don't have too many quests that use them, but it seems pretty strange to have a monster trait like that and not have very many options. Really, the Elemental is the only one you can use unless you have the Conversion Kit. Plus, the Wendigo is in the 4th H&M collection... but it still seems pretty odd to me.

It'd also be nice to see more Water-type monsters, but with the Plague Worm and the Carrion Drake it looks like they have made efforts to bring more of them in.

Here's a list of the traits and how many monsters are in each one for anyone interested:

CAVE: 18

CURSED: 16

BUILDING: 12
DARK: 10
WILDERNESS: 10
MOUNTAIN: 8
CIVILIZED: 7
HOT: 7
WATER: 5
COLD: 3

I think it would be a neat thing to have more cold elemental monsters, but to really appreciate them, we'd need "cold" map tiles. It's an aspect I could see being expanded in a small box. Lair of the Wyrm had a fire theme, Trollfens had a swamp/disease theme, who knows about Manor of Ravens. I could absolutely see an icy small box expansion somewhere down the line.

Same as above

a sasquatch could be an awesome addition

I definitely think an expansion with a campaign wrapped around cold, snow, and ice would be sweet.

I hope it's a full campaign expansion when the theme is ice. I would really dig an Overlord class related to ice like Frostbite class or some such. Slowing down heroes and the like... maybe make the floor slippery. Yea we already have grease trap, but what about a little ice tile that comes with the game that you can drop on the map when using an OL card to make the ground icy, and heroes slip or have to use stamina when attacking on it to avoid slipping?

OR A CARD THAT SAYS "THE OVERLORD HAS FROZEN YOU AND YOU ARE DEAD"

Yea... that would be sweet...

Put on your jackets heroes...

I do like the idea in general, but I doubt they'd implement it that way in D2E. D1E was full of modular terrain tiles like that (including ice tiles in Tomb of Ice,) but in D2E the guiding design principle seems to be printing terrain on the map tile instead - to reduce set up/tear down presumably.

I suspect icy terrain in an Ice themed expansion would more likely be presented as a new terrain type, perhaps with traps that imitate the effect, but without laying a permanent tile on the board.
