Anti-phantom/anti-swarm, suicide squad (Magikarp)

By Webheadcw, in X-Wing

This list is purely for fun, but it takes advantage of a mechanic I've never seen anybody use before. The squad is

Bandit+assault missiles+munitions fail safe x4

Outer rim smuggler

Assault missiles:

If this attack hits each other ship at range 1 of the defender suffers 1 damage

(It's doesn't specify friendly or not)

The idea is to ram the ORS into a swarm or when a phantom is in range one, target lock your ORS with the bandits and then unload your assault missiles on your own ORS. anything within range 1 of the large base ORS is suffering 4 damage.

Things 4 damage insta-kills

Tie fighters

Tie interceptors

Tie phantoms

A-wings

Z-95

Things four damage cripples

X-wings

Hwk 290

Tie-advanced

E-wings

(I named the squad Magikarp because it really only has two attacks, SPLASH, and then when it runs out of missiles FLAIL)

Assault missiles:

If this attack hits each other ship at range 1 of the defender suffers 1 damage

(It's doesn't specify friendly or not)

The reason it doesn't mention friendly or not, is because YOU CAN"T TARGET YOUR OWN SHIPS!!!! ;)

Where does it specifically say I can't attack my own ship?

In the rulebook.

On pg 9 it describes how to perform the Target Lock action (snip): "To acquire a target lock, follow these steps:

1. Determine if the enemy ship is within range..." (bolded by me for emphasis)

Then on pg 10 it describes the Combat Phase: "1. Declare Target: the attacker chooses which enemy ship he wishes to attack."

Question: what game have you ever played that allows you to attack your own models/units??? Attacking your own stuff is almost never a thing in miniatures games (the only exception I can think of is the Skaven in Warhammer Fantasy, back in ye olde days of imbalanced ridiculous WH rules of yore).

preeeeeety sure you can't target lock your own ship. Neat idea though.

You can still try and ram the ships with OTS and target lock the ships he rammed who lose their action if they bump OTS, though if I saw this list I'd probably assume that was the tactic you were going to attempt and just avoid OTS.

idea had merit. Have to give the OP credit.. would be a neat tactic ha.

Page 10 of the main rulebook. Concerning attacks:

"During this phase, each ship may perform one attack against one enemy ship that is inside its firing arc and within range."

Though also on page 10 of the main rulebook.

During this step, the attacker (the active ship) must declare its target (the ship he wishes to attack).

As for Target lock:, that one all I see you can only target lock an enemy ship. (page 16/17)

Now since I can find semi conflicting rules, without an update in the most recent FAQ and rule errata...there is technically nothing that says you can't target your own ship with a secondary weapon (Primary it says only enemy ships). So that means based on the rules it would technically go to a dice roll to decide if it could be done. You each roll 3 dice red/green and most focus wins the decision (I have no clue if this ever happens in tournaments).

Now...The problem with flying into an opposing squadron is there can be no overlap, so based on formation you will normally get pushed to the front of the formation. So it is not very effective on getting all ships in a group. You still have to hit vs your own defense dice too, the updated FAQ does state you HAVE to roll defense dice.

Another item I looked at for reference was the proximity bomb. It has the same text for causing damage as assault missiles so once the assault missile explodes it hits everything (including friendly) in range 1.

if you are that worried about getting a hit. Just get Lt. Blount running rebels. You are better off running a bomber in suicide and dropping a proximity charge for the 1 damage.

In starcraft you can attack your own units, it is a way of dealing with cloaked units when you have no detection

Can do that in warmachine too butsadly not in xwing.

Just accept/realize/face the fact that your are NOT allowed to target your own ship, you never were allowed and that the whole idea of doing so is idiotic and totally countering both the basic principle of this being a dog fighting game and also completely in contrast to most things in Star Wars.

And move on

Sounds like someone is functionally fixated and would never make it in Ender's Creche. :P

A novel idea, but sadly prohibited (in theory) by the rules.

RAW could you use deadeye to allow you to use assault missiles on your own ship? I'd never do this but I figured it might fit with strict interpretaion for the rules, since it bypasses having to target lock your own ship.
