So, what side projects do you have going?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in X-Wing

I was going to make some asteroids, then I saw online and bought some asteroids that are produced by Gale Force 9 for use in our games here. I thought they were quite reasonably priced through one of our local games suppliers.

Some sit on the table or on flight stands, and are heavy enough that they are not easily pushed around the play area.

They have been well received by players in the games here.

It is quite different trying to manoeuvre through a realistic asteroid field than over and around tokens. I may try making some myself, now I have a better understanding of what they look like and what they're made of.

I was working on a 5 mission campaign to be "DMed" by me for my friend called Ghosts of Ison… and then they announced the TIE Phantom.

And this invalidates your campaign?

Can't think of anything else.. maybe rock or sponge asteroids...

Sponge asteroids!!!

That's brilliant. I can now stop haunting my neighborhood for people with lava rock landscaping. (Apparently, lava rocks are not in fashion in my side of Portland.)

Thanks for the idea. :)

I am working on a YT 1300 remod, nd repaint.

I have a Kath Scarlet repaint in the works..

And I still want to do some squadron marks on bombers and TIE fighters... maybe an advanced as well.... keep wondering if I could make a deal sweet enough to get Rodent to do the imp symbols on one of my advanceds.. lol

Would love to light up a YT and also a Lambda and Firespray as well...

I think that's it.. oh.. repaint my transport.. lol.. wanna put an imp symbol on the nose and weather it to almost non existance...

I would also like to get a group going to make X-Wing stats for Robotech ships because I have no faith in any rules that Palladium and Kevin Siembieda have been anywhere near but would still like to maybe play with all the miniatures I am getting. Just not sure how to get such a group started.

You're not the only one with those feelings. The fact that I haven't seen anything about the rules for the game since the core concept stuff that was revealed way back when does not fill me with hope that they will be a robust well playtested set of rules.

Regarding X-Wing side projects, I'm waiting on my Battlefoam bags so that I can start making the gimp foam trays to suit them to carry all of my X-Wing stuff.

Haha.. I can't take credit for the sponge asteroids, someone on here did it and I just thought it was brilliant as well.. all ya do is tear into a large foam sponge and make it look.. asteroid-y.. lol.. paint it black then hit the high spots with the grey of your choice or browns.. maybe both.. should work fine..

Millennium Falsehood , where do you get the lights? I've seen some pictures around the webs. Possibly some of them have been yours. Is it a pain to get them to light up, or do the minis come apart fairly easily?

Mainly Walmart's brand of LED Christmas tree lights. They come apart easily with their leads free for soldering, and have a really cool little lens in the top that casts the light in all directions. I also order from www.oznium.com and various other internet sites.

Will any pilot be able to use it, or just the Force sensitive ones (Vader, Luke, Corran & Kyle - am I missing anyone)?

The player can them on any of their ships (and in some cases, enemy ships), otherwise there wouldn't be many pilots that can use the cards. I see it more as the player in the role of the squad commander.

I am working on a 1/270 scale Nubulon B Escort Frigate to complement my 1/270 scale Blockade Runner.

3D printed tokens.

They're available on Shapeways , though more expensive than I had hoped.

I also ordered test prints for colored ones, gonna release those for sale (and make a new thread about them) as soon as I know that the models print well with the colored plastics.

Action IV transport for imp, rebel, or Wild Karrde.

CR20 Transport for either side, or pirates.

The DP20 uses the CR90 as a proxy miniature. 14424346414_05c0ce93fa_o.png

There is an a pretty fantastic set of Imperial CR90 set of cards

made by Sans_fi aka Melminiatures, posted on the same thread.

I'm curious about the final point base.

~300 points fully loaded with QLCs, STLs, Crew, Teams, and Missiles.

Probably more because the missiles are unlimited.

How has this been working out for you?

Today I played my first truly epic battle at (only) 225 points against a CR-90 and some escorts (see the narrative report here ).

I did the evil thing and chose to bring lots of low-PS TIEs and Bombers. That meant that my movements and shootings would take ages and my poor opponents had to wait for ever to roll some dice. I was trying to hurry up and made some sequencing mistakes as I went along because I was rushed. It all could have been more fun.

If you're playing one 300pnt ship, I can't imagine that game would be all that much fun to play.

What's your experience thus far?

I built a Death Star surface. I'm currently working out how to add a trench and keep things as modular as possible. I think my final plan is to actually build two 3' long trench sections with 9-12" of surface on the other side. That would let me set up one section of trench between the two main plates for a 3'x5-ish board (trench the short way - doesn't feel right for a trench run, but nice scenery). For a more proper Trench Run game, I could then set the trench the long way for a 6'x4'-ish board, and be able to spend some time running the gauntlet. Or we could still just use the surface plates as they are for a classic 3'x3'.

That Death Star surface is awesome! I much prefer it to the commercially available mat. When I first got into the game, I was also contemplating doing something similar, and also thought about doing a Star Destroyer. You've actually implemented it! You've also done a brilliant job in terms of giving it actual relief without making it annoying to play on (it seems)

Thumbs up!

Thanks! It took a long time cutting and placing all the shapes, but it was totally worth it. It gives a good impression of a textured surface with some depth while actually being effectively flat.

The surface works great for ships, tokens, and templates - all the actual game pieces. You TOTALLY can't roll dice on it, though. :)

Do you have pictures to share of these - or a link to the thread in which you show your pictures?

In one game I had a TIE Bomber, 2x TIE adv, 2x TIE int, 6x TIE fighters verses the CR90, 2x X-wings, and a B-wing. The CR90 was shredded.

We were on the road for three days and just got back, but before we left we had tried one Phantom versus one Outer Rim Smuggler, twice, and the Phantom almost won the second game.

I know we may start a game with the DP20 soon but it's going to go slowly

because of extra school work, exams and essays, this week.

I intend to uses all five of my X-wings, both B-wings, perhaps some A-wings & Y-wings.

We've played 4 games with the CR90, two game each using it, and I feel good about getting it right.

Yeah, I hear you on the schoolwork. I'm on the other end. I'm having to create and teach courses this summer. I've got another game in the works in a few weeks in which I'll be piloting the CR-90, with a friend running the escorts and another friend sending the Imperials at me.

How long do your think it will be before they give you the author Account?

Nothing at the moment I'm running a Warmachine/Hordes campaign.

??

I was trying to ask @StevenEsven when he is likely to get his authoring account for the x-wing update for Armybuilder. :)

I'm not sure the quote/mutliquote is working for me, I might try PM.

oops, now I have to go back and correct all the places I wrote 300 points, I was adding 101 fore and 95 aft and getting 296. But oddly enough it seems to be able to stand up to a 300 point attack, so I don't know.
