So, what side projects do you have going?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in X-Wing

I'm curious what sort of fan-made X-Wing Miniatures Game-enhancing stuff you guys are working on.

I've seen tons of modeling, rules-making, campaign-making, etc. going on, but each of these has a thread of its own that doubtlessly gets buried in this active forum. It would be nice to have a thread that gives links to those project threads. Hopefully there's also enough to keep this thread from getting buried.

I'll try to maintain an up-to-date listing of links to off-site pages and threads dealing with those projects.

Mikael Hasselstein's Online Campaign Engine: The Sharlissian Campaign

This is a project that I've been working on for about two months now. It will an online campaign engine which will allow two opponents to square off against one another in a narrative campaign. Unlike many other campaigns, which involve the Empire and the Rebels (and Black Sun) squaring off against one another as equals, this narrative is embedded in the reality of the Galactic Civil War: one of a scrappy insurgency against a galactic hegemonic government.

Dagobah Dave's Unoffocial X-Wing Galactic Campaign

Also in the category of campaigns, Dave has this system that allows anybody to report their battles with as much or little color as they like, provided the basic information (faction, build, date) are there. I've been having a blast with it, as you can read in his thread on the topic. On his site, and in the thread, he's also got some great maps that show how the balance in the galaxy is shifting to that of civilization, law and order, rather than that of chaotic rabble or criminal villainy

Much fun.

So, what do you all have going on?

Edited by Mikael Hasselstein

Nothing to link to (yet), but I am working on a death star trench board for big set piece scenarios, I would also like to get a group going to make X-Wing stats for Robotech ships because I have no faith in any rules that Palladium and Kevin Siembieda have been anywhere near but would still like to maybe play with all the miniatures I am getting. Just not sure how to get such a group started. I also have a few ideas on a capital ship scale game using a variation of the flight path system. That one is just waiting on me to take some pictures.

I'm still working on my Imperial Customs Corvette. Other projects include:

Lighting and building an interior for my CR90 (going really well, actually).

Lighting an Imperial Shuttle with engine lights and fiber optically-lit anti-collision lights.

Lighting a Slave I.

I'm working on trying to not crash my ships into each other.... so far, I'm still my own worst enemy.

Those all sound cool.

Forgottenlore , the idea of building a trench board was also one of my first notions when I got into the game just a couple of months ago. It seems like there are a lot of people with the flat Death Star mats, and even some trenches. I had thought to do mine with some relief, but that would probably be hell with the mini bases. What have been your ideas. (Also, Dagobah Dave has a rule set on his website , in case you're in need of one.) Are you making your own, or mail ordering some turbolaser turrets?

Millennium Falsehood , where do you get the lights? I've seen some pictures around the webs. Possibly some of them have been yours. Is it a pain to get them to light up, or do the minis come apart fairly easily?

t7thunders , good luck with that, bro.

I started a couple of huge ship builds last year but then I got word from some of my friends still in the game biz that FFG is going to make a few so I am on hold with that stuff.

I do however have several other smaller projects going right now .

:)

What ships had you been planning to work on?

I've been playing around with the idea of modeling a BFF-1, but I can totally see that as being the Imperial equivalent of the GR-75.

I am somewhat lucky in the tools I currently have available. My roomate has a (very nice) large format printer, so for the death star surface I have printed out several 2'x4' pieces to be mounted on Masonite. For the trench itself, I intend to mount some of the print outs in 6"x4' sections and attach those pieces together so that the trench can hang suspended between 2 tables, making the trench roughly 6" square in cross section. So far i am uncertain how to go about connecting those pieces however. Ideally I would like them hinged in some fashion so that the whole thing can be folded up semi-flat for storage.

As for the turbo lasers, I also have a laser engraving machine, so I have been planning on making my own. Haven't really done anything in that direction yet though, wanted to get the basic surface done first.

After seeing the star destroyer in another post, I'm going to have a go at making a fully lit Cruiser hangar bay for our epic battles.

The Mark III and a Striker .

I am still working on data files for Army Builder for our beloved game.

Currently I am awaiting an author account to publish my work.

Just finished designing my Imperial Combat Transport and am now trying to get caught up on fighters and mines. All while dealing with a cat who seems to think that running back and forth in front of the computer while im doing fiddly bits is all good fun

Well making a dual sided deathstar trench and Yavin base templates (but been very slow and lazy about it) for a Death Star Trench and Vader's revenge assault on Yavin evacuation scenario.

After that make a star destroyer base and then trying to find a Star Destroyer model to fit it and make up some cards.

Several side-projects, I guess you could say "multi-sided-projects"

X-Wing Ground Assault variant based on the Battle of Hoth

Current status: Models assembled and painted, rules being playtested.

http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/105371-dont-hassle-the-hoth/

Sword Squadron "Comic-book"

Current status: Six episodes completed.

http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/94065-sword-squadron/

Episode I Pod Racer variant

Current status: Models purchased , rules being drafted for testing. No this is not as lame as it sounds (or maybe it is!) :P

Star Wars 25mm Skirmish variant

Current status: Models collected and painting begun.

Side projects? Well in learning the bagpipes but that's not really related to the game.

Otherwise, I've been painting over the red of each x-wing so that all of Them are different colors.

My main project is still in the works, though progress has been slow over the summer when I'm working on the house.

I built a Death Star surface. I'm currently working out how to add a trench and keep things as modular as possible. I think my final plan is to actually build two 3' long trench sections with 9-12" of surface on the other side. That would let me set up one section of trench between the two main plates for a 3'x5-ish board (trench the short way - doesn't feel right for a trench run, but nice scenery). For a more proper Trench Run game, I could then set the trench the long way for a 6'x4'-ish board, and be able to spend some time running the gauntlet. Or we could still just use the surface plates as they are for a classic 3'x3'.

Storage will be an issue...

The next project I want to start on is a 6'-8' long Star Destroyer, constructed similarly, to be used similarly to the Death Star surface - a play field that shoots back. Logistics are tricky, I want the surface to have the slight angle of a Star Destroyer, and I want it constructed modularly enough that I can set it up as the top (classic profile, command tower and whatnot) or the bottom (with the docking bay and whatever other silly objective-bits that might be appropriate).

Every now and then I also tinker with the idea of making it possible to set it up as either a classic ImpStar or an Interdictor... It's essentially going to be a scenario piece, so it would be fun to maximize the options.

Aside from the angles and the modularity, I think the Star Destroyer should actually take FAR less time (per square foot, anyway) than cutting and gluing all the little bits for the Death Star surface.

I made a Custom trench awhile back, but I mounted it on cardboard with a Hot Glue Gun - and in the Florida Heat it totally fell apart so I'm going to use wood one weekend and re-build it. Cutting wood = manly!

I'm usually cooking up a homebrew scenario or variant style of play.

This morning I woke up with an idea for a race scenario, so I'll probably be working on that today.

I've created a new Force card game mechanic. They are one-use abilities that players gain by completing match objectives in a league I've started running. They are (hopefully) not game changing but allow players to gain benefits from one match that carry over to subsequent games. Although designed for a league, they can be used in any sort of game really.

This system is still being tested but I will make it available to the community very soon as I would appreciated some feedback :)

To give you a sneak preview, here is one of the cards:

That Death Star surface is awesome! I much prefer it to the commercially available mat. When I first got into the game, I was also contemplating doing something similar, and also thought about doing a Star Destroyer. You've actually implemented it! You've also done a brilliant job in terms of giving it actual relief without making it annoying to play on (it seems)

Thumbs up!

Will any pilot be able to use it, or just the Force sensitive ones (Vader, Luke, Corran & Kyle - am I missing anyone)?

Recently finished up my 28mm Gladiators.

Still working on some small terrain pieces for Muskets & Tomahawks.

Just got my first warband for Saga (Jomsvikings).

I'm trying to find the time to play test two huge ship card designs

I was working on a 5 mission campaign to be "DMed" by me for my friend called Ghosts of Ison… and then they announced the TIE Phantom.

I am working on a YT 1300 remod, nd repaint.

I have a Kath Scarlet repaint in the works..

And I still want to do some squadron marks on bombers and TIE fighters... maybe an advanced as well.... keep wondering if I could make a deal sweet enough to get Rodent to do the imp symbols on one of my advanceds.. lol

Would love to light up a YT and also a Lambda and Firespray as well...

I think that's it.. oh.. repaint my transport.. lol.. wanna put an imp symbol on the nose and weather it to almost non existance...

Can't think of anything else.. maybe rock or sponge asteroids...
