I had something to bounce off you guys, as I am not as well informed about Star Wars lore. How does the Empire view the Wookies?
I know they have largely been enslaved by the Empire, but presumably there are still some out in the wild living free. How badly persecuted are these free wookies? Arrested on sight? Left alone unless they cause problems? Could one visit an Imperial world without difficulty?
I'm curious about this regarding Mon Calamari and other enslaved species too.
There's a very good little segment in Platt's Starport Guide that covers this in reference to an Imperial world (Byblos). In it it talks about how members of slave species are expected to have an owner and upon arrival on the planet (as part of the customs process) they have to show proof the being is legally indentured aboard the ship, get little ID tags and the master a corresponding "owners card", and always be escorted by their master. It also says they are only allowed to operate within a specific area (the Star port tower in this case, it's a big tower) unless the owner is also a certified slave trader. Untagged/accompanied slaves may be shot on sight, though they are usually just detained in the Customs office until the owner comes by to pick them up and pay a 500c fine.
So there you have it. Not exactly wonderful, but from an RPG party perspective it's workable.

I'd say it all depends which world and how strong is Imperial presence. On Core Worlds definitively not legally, but as you move far away and away from Coruscant, so does the law relax. After all Tatooine was an Imperial world and no one bothered Solo's first mate....but then it was a movie and we learned that this is an Imperial world with an Imperial governor only from the WEG sourcebooks years later.
The Imperials view anything as non human as a primitive creature. Wookiees more so since they cannot speak basic.
