New to X-Wing-suggested extra ships for Imperials

By Villager Assassin, in X-Wing

Hey everyone!

I'm new to the forums and I am thinking about buying the X-Wing core box set. I have read the rules and like the look of it and if I decide to buy it I will probably be going mainly for Imperials. What extra ships (for 100 points) are really worth while. I like the look of the Imperial Aces and the TIE Interceptor/Fighter and kind of into the Landing Shuttle.

So what would you suggest?

Thanks!

Villager Assassin :)

buy whatever appeals to you

if everything appeals to you, buy one of everything and play with all of them.. from there find out what you like most and buy multiples of those

if you're looking to be fairly competitive, i'd recommend at least 5-6 tie fighters, a phantom, at least one interceptor (for turr and soontir fel) and one box of imperial aces for the other monster known as carnor jax. a defender, 1-2 firesprays.. you could buy one tie advanced for Vader.. he's worth it but you can make any list competitive without him

and finally a bomber or 2

and to stay on the competitive side you will also have to invest a good chunk of change into the rebellion as well, as you will find a lot of action cards that are exclusive to certain ships on both sides

you can get a list of everything that's included with each ship here

http://www.afewmaneuvers.com/topic/573-full-card-list-by-expansion/

hope this helps

well along with the core set you should probably at least get one extra tie fighter. They really are a great bargain for the points and you could use the extra pilots that the booster comes with.

If you're looking to fill out a 100 point list, pick up some of the more expensive ships in terms of points cost, like the Defender or (especially) the Firespray. Both have reasons to be recommended to a newer player, like the white K-turn for the former, and the rear firing arc for the latter. Be forewarned, there can be something of a learning curve involved with these ships, but I wouldn't concern yourself with the big-bad-meta just yet.

Thanks guys!

So what I've got is more TIE Fighters, Interceptors, Firesprays and Vader.

Thanks Again!

Welcome to the madness game.

It's pretty hard to go wrong with Fighters and Interceptors as a starting point for the Empire. The only thing is that, if you want to go Interceptors, you'll probably have to grab both Imperial Aces and a normal Interceptor. Imperial Aces gives you a couple copies of Push the Limit, which is almost mandatory on Interceptors (and is otherwise available only with the A-wing), and the regular Interceptor gives you the really good pilots.

Something like this:

Core Set

2x TIE Fighters

1x TIE Interceptor

Imperial Aces

Would give you quite a few options for Fighter/Interceptor combinations to play around with. From there you can start picking up the other ships to experiment, or get more Fighters to start swarming. Or dip your toe into the Rebel side of things. Whatever appeals to you. :)

For Imperials, I have made this list

Firespray (Bounty Hunter) Gunner,Homing Missile,Proximity Mines 45

TIE Fighter (Black Squadron Pilot) 14

TIE Fighter (Night Beast) 15

TIE Interceptor (Royal Guard) Push the Limit 25

How does this fare? I'm about to make a Rebel List

X-Wing (Red Squadron Pilot) Proton Torpedoes, R5 Astromech 28

X-Wing (Rookie Pilot) R5 Astromech 22

Y-Wing (Gray Squadron Pilot) Proton Torpedoes, Ion Cannon Turret 29

A-Wing (Green Squadron Pilot) 21

i'd say drop the proxy mines.. they are not worth the cost in my opinion.. a seismic charge is far superior and worth its cost

as for the rebels.. some people swear by torpedoes. myself however i'm never sold on them as i find they are more of a point sink that most of the time don't net any real results and and better spent on upgrades that will last you the duration that your ship is currently alive.. another option is to open up more points for higher pilot skills with unique pilots that have useful and sometimes have synergies with your squad

Since you're just starting out, try those squads and see what happens. The players with more experience are likely to recommend squads that are competitive, but you won't necessarily do well with them because they'll rely on a deeper knowledge of how things work in the game.

For now, just have fun with it. Get really comfortable with the flow of play, maneuvering around and through asteroids, "blocking" other ships by running into them, and don't worry too much about whether your squads are good or not.

Bare minimum entry for the good guys should look something like this:

Core x2 (dice and 4 ties)

Tie x1-2

Interceptor

2x BH

1x shuttle

2x bomber

1x advanced

Imperial Aces

That should get you everything shipwise you'll need for 100pts for a good long time. You can run a swarm (named), 3 big, 3 aces, Vader supported swarm, shuttle swarm, dual BH... Covers the "basics". That's about the order that I would invest in too (Vader can be bought if wanted anywhere). If that's too much... 2 core and then start buying one of everything in order of preference. 2 core also gives you some xwings to shoot down!

Ok thanks for the advise. I'll start then with 2 core sets.

As a bare minimum, get 2 core sets and a TIE Fighter expansion (5 TIE Fighters in total). You can then build what is known as a mini-Swarm: Howlrunner + 3-4 other TIE Fighters (usually Academy Pilots).

After that, you can add a "main ship" to play alongside your mini-Swarm. Candidates include TIE Interceptor (Soontir Fel has great maneuverability and has lots of tricks in his arsenal), Slave I (for heavy-duty attacking), TIE Phantom (for sneak attacks) or even the Shuttle (though it is a somewhat difficult ship to fly).

The good thing about this approach is that you have the mini-Swarm as your base. What changes from build to build is the "main ship" you pair with the mini-Swarm, and you can try different "main ships" to find one that suits your tastes. After playing this a few times, you can continue on to other builds like 4x Interceptor or 2x Firespray, etc.

Ok then.

Probably go for Howlrunner and 3 or 4 Academy Pilots/Obsidian Squadron Pilots and a TIE Interceptor (Royal Guard)

Very mixed replies here

Yeah, start with that:
2 Cores (4 TIE Fighters)

1 TIE Fighter (for Howlrunner)

1 Imperial Aces (for Royal Guards and Push the Limit) - Carnor Jax is a good pilot from this set

If you like the Interceptor, then buy 1 TIE Interceptor expansion for Soontir Fel. Otherwise check out one of the other ships I mentioned. You can then add ships as you like.

What you should buy depends on what you want to get out of the game. My recommended list is good if you want to have fun but also have a decent chance of winning. Some builds are fun (esp. Darth Vader-led builds) but are not very good in tournaments or in games where you want to have a decent chance of winning. My recommended buying list also has a ramp-up approach to buying. That way, you won't buy a bunch of ships only to find out that you don't want/don't have time for X-Wing anymore or that what you bought does not suit your playing style and end up having to offload the ships at a fraction of their price.

Tie x1-2

Interceptor

2x BH

1x shuttle

2x bomber

1x advanced

This, by the way, is a good ultimate list to shoot for.

Thus me back pedaling after realizing that's most of my collection on the imperial side after about a year of playing.

Ok thanks

It's usually worth getting Core twice. The extra dice are really useful, plus its cheaper than getting those TIEs individually.

I'd say bare minimum entry is

a second core set

a tie expansion

and one "costly" flanker:

phantom (probably the #1 choice)

firespray

defender

tie interceptor (might be best to go with imperial aces so you can get push the limit for the interceptor of choice [carnor jax] and hull upgrade for howlrunner).

That gives you one basically one nice build to work with:

4 named ties (howlrunner) + phantom.

or

4 ties howlrunner with hull upgrade + interceptor with push the limit and hull upgrade.

Competitive list buildable with exactly the things I stated: 5 tie swarm + PLT int

"Howlrunner" (18)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Hull Upgrade (3)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Carnor Jax (26)
Push the Limit (3)
Academy Pilot (12)
Total: 100

I found it (relatively) cheaper to buy three core sets

than to buy those nine ships individually.

That's 6 TIE fighters towards your TIE swarm right there.

To the OP.

Welcome! Welcome!

Just started myself. I started with just Imperial Aces and Darth (Tie Advanced). The TIE-A is a bit of a bust so I am now with the majority in saying pass unless you really like Vader :). However Imp Aces is a nice pack and a must have on my list.

You can see what else I bought so far in my sig.

The only thing I'd do differently is getting a Lambda. The ship has a lot of useful upgrades and can be quite durable for the cost. It is on my to buy list after my bank account recovers a bit :)

Edit: I should add I still fly Vader..cause, he's Vader. And in casual games he is a blast. In tourney he can be made decent but it's pricey. And if you are new to the game and on a budget you probably don't have all the upgrades the folks are saying. Engine Upgrade is amazing...and only available with the Falcon. And for about the same points as an upgraded Vader...you could be rocking with loaded Firespray, Falcon, or Phantom. Or a pair of B-Wings... That said Squad Leader is only TIE-A.

Granted with proxies you pretty much don't need anything except the dice and templates (note official tournament rules do not allow proxy ship/cards)...and the models are sooo shiney....must...have...more... :)

Oh, one more tip, if you want to see what is in a set before you buy there are several places that list every ship and expansion. Afewmaneuvers is one place. Good reference if you are on a lean budget.

Maarek more so than Vader as he slices into hull with more precision.

Try Vader + Engine Upgrade + Outmaneuver sometime.
