Ethan + 5Z, the rebel swarm?

By n3ctaris, in X-Wing

Ethan (32)

5x Bandit (12)

Total: 92

The list is 92 points base, with 8 points to play with. I've been running Ethan with PTL, R2 and Sensor Jammer, this allows him to focus/evade for defense, or TL/Focus for offense.

The ability for each of the fighters to TL means you can get the Howl-runner effect with the added bonus of turning up hits to crits.

Thoughts? Feedback?

Seems like you might have trouble against high PS builds that might be able to take out Etahn early. You've made him about as tanky as possible, and I think that's essential.

I haven't played much against Phantoms but it seems like a Whisper/Echo build could cause you a lot of problems, either by sniping Etahn or picking off your Z-95s one by one. The lack of PS higher than 5 means they will always be cloaked by ACD by the time you shoot.

Other than that it's an interesting list. Etahn is a very interesting ship and I think we'll be seeing him a lot in the coming months.

Yup, it looks good. Also vulnerable to Phantoms, but what isn't without PS9+ and/or Turret Gunners?

My short list of archetype Rebel Swarms are, off the top of my head, including Refit A-wings:

  • Etahn; 5Z (92 points)
  • related: Etahn; 2A; 3Z (98 points)
  • BXXZZZ (100 points)
  • 7Z; 1A (99 points)
  • Tarn + R7; 5A (100 points)
  • 3B; 2A (96 points) <-- edit

You forgotten the most annoying swarm on the planet: 4 gold squadron Y's all with ion.

I'm not sure that 4 ships counts as a "swarm" though. :)

But it inspires this addition:

3Y + Ion; 2 A (99 points)

When they ion Echo and Jax off the table, it's swarm enough

More than 1 Ion Turret can cause issues because you don't do any damage. 4 ships that only do 1 damage each turn and no guarantee that attack hits anyway. The biggest benefit is that is a lot of HP, but you'll get focused down pretty easily without any real damage output.

FFG should start making pilots whose names are easy to spell.

Star Wars novel writers from years or decades ago should start making pilots whose names are easy to spell.

Fixed

While that's true, it's the same thing for Howlrunner. Remove either one and the remaining ships lose firepower. Etahn has an advantage in survivability with shields, more HP's and a system upgrade. But does of course cost a lot more then Howl does.

how about 5 for a swarm?

Etahn

Biggs

Airen

2 Z-95 Bandits

even 100 points... flying in formation - Airen gives an extra action to Etahn or Biggs, Biggs is the meatshield, and everyone upgrades a hit to a crit.

That's pretty close to my favorite wave 4 list so far:

32 Etahn A'baht

25 Biggs Darklighter

19 Airen Cracken

2 Swarm Tactics

I go back and forth between a BSP and a Rookie for my final ship, depending on how I feel about initiative.

Im not so sure this list will work well. Along with the mentioned weakness to phantoms, Z95s are squishy - more so than Tie Fighters. ( Is +1 sh, hull->sh, +1PS worth -1 agi? Along with no BR or evade) Therefore to get value out of them, they need to be not shot at so they can leverage TL (their main advantage). IMO they are best with a ship(s) which are a greater threat to draw aggro.

In this list, youll either have them going after Etahn right away or your squishy fighters - neither are appealing.

I'd opt for talas to not get predatored to death

Z-95 durability is slightly better, on average, than a TIE Fighter. See my post here:
