Opinions on the Y-Wing, and the Blaster Turret

By devotedknight, in X-Wing

I just wanted to know if a Y-Wing is worth the points? And is the Blaster turret point effective, or an Ion Turret is better.

Generally most people go with the Ion Turret. Dutch also is a great support ship.

The Y-Wing is a great, tough ship, and coupled with an Ion Turret helps you control your opponent's movement and set up easy shots. Ion a stressed ship and it's out of the game. Interceptors do NOT like flying against them. Dutch is a great support ship as well, handing out free target locks.

Y-Wings really benefit from R2 Astromechs. I personally wouldn't go with a Blaster Turret - needing a focus to activate makes it less reliable than the Ion Turret.

As of now the Ion turret is easier to use with Y-Wings. While the blaster turret can potentially provide more damage it requires a focus. Without a passenger slot to double focus you can't spend focus and then modify dice rolls to ensure hits. You could target lock then focus but still that is allot of turns to get an extra dice roll outside your firing arc. Blaster turrets works much better on a HWK because it is only 1 firepower and you can get recon specialist for double focus for 2 extra dice. For the Y-Wing if you have a target in front of you at range 1 you already get 3 attack dice so you might as well save the focus for your attack dice.

Y-wings with ions are the way to go, and they're gonna be much more useful against these new imp wave 4 ships

Why R2 Astromechs? You don't have to pull off any stressful maneuvers with them unless your trying to launch a torpedo, which I don't really reccomend.

1. The Y-Wing can certainly be "worth the points." It's tough and fairly maneuverable (w/ R2) and a great turret carrier.

2. The Blaster Turret is generally NOT all that effective on a Y-Wing. I may work on the HWK but on the Y-Wing you just don't have an easy way to get the Focus tokens it for a Y-Wing to feed itself to use the Blaster. For a point more the Ion leaves you the Focus token; averages marginally less damage (especially w/ Focus to help hit!), and has that game control aspect the Blaster Turret completely lacks.

Because more and more this are causing stress and a y isn't great at clearing it.

I'd only consider it with Horton if you can keep them at Range 2, or with a Gray+ packing R2-D6 and either PTL or Predator.

Interceptors do NOT like flying against them.

I take offense to that.

Kidding, I don't actually. But I do disagree… Interceptors are some of my favorite ships to take against Y-Wings. Many high PS named Interceptors do quite well thanks to one ability or another, and lower PS Interceptors with Outmaneuver are amazing. And dodging the 3 attack dice isn't all that hard, especially with Soontir Fel.

Y-Wings also fly very well with X-Wings. The Y may have less green & more red on their dial than the X, but they both have the exact same maneuvers available. Garven & Dutch have been a match made in token-passing heaven since day 1. Use them right & they will both always have focus & target lock for some very effective shooting. The R2 Astromech is a great choice for Y-Wings, as has been mentioned already (they do come in the same expansion, after all). I've also had success using R5-K6 on Dutch for even more fun with free target locks...

A blaster can work if you keep Garven close to feed focus tokens. I really prefer the ion though. It gives you options since you can always shoot with your main gun. If I am in range 1 and in my attack cone then I usually go for the three dice main attack.

The Y has an OK tournament record. It's actually been used by people who have won things.

Most people seem to play them wrong. They use them like Falcons and ignore the rocks. Y-Wings have a smaller base and can actually hide in asteroid fields where their ion turret gives them a much larger advantage than normal (it crashes people trying to kill the Y-Wing).

The blaster turret needs focus to fire, which means you could have instead of fired a focussed ion turret, and a focussed ion turret on average does more damage than an unfocussed 3 dice blaster. You miss the lucky damage spike that can 1-shot people but you can't rely on that. Of course if you have free focus (e.g. Kyle Katarn's HWk-290) the decision is no longer easy.

Both the named pilots are OK. Dutch has a great target lock squadron buff. Horton re-rolls damage, but so does target lock, so really I'd only take him for the PS8 (shoots before a Phantom does) but you could try Dutch with Veteran Instincts.

Despite its hit points, the Y-Wing is about as durable as an X-Wing. Slightly harder to burn oione down at long range, but at range 1 it can fall apart fast due to only having 1 green dice. It's main advantage is, as you guessed, that turret, which will fire every turn.

Don't try to get people into blaster arc with the Y-Wing. Concentrate on getting out of their arc, and crashing them into asteroids with your ion gun. You will pull ahead in the long attrition game as they miss shots due you k-turning behind them, or them getting ionised. It's not an X-Wing so don't play it like one.

Nope, Y-Wings don't have Elite Talents.

Actually, just remembered R4-D6 is about now. But a 30 point Dutch with that, VI, and an Ion Turret seems wasteful.

I was just about to remind you of that.

As for how "wasteful" a PS 8 ship with an Ion Turret is may depend on how many Phantoms you need to chase.

That's fair I guess. For the same amount of points you could take:

Kyle Katarn + VI + Recon Specialist + Ion Turret

-or-

Jan Ors + Ion Turret

And after looking at that, I must agree that Dutch is probably the best option considering his slightly better dial, better base attack, and increase in total HP.

another way I like kitting out Dutch is to give him R2-D6 + Draw their Fire. I usually run this with Biggs. The opponent is forced to shoot at Biggs, and I can extend his life a little bit longer by soaking up a couple crits from Biggs. He comes in at 30 points, but serves 3 purposes: Ion turret carrier, TL squad buffer, and Biggs life extender.

I think the cutoff point at which the HWK-290 survives longer than the Y-Wing is around 4 red dice.
