He is indeed amazing, but I'll keep the thread going in the epic fight for 2nd place
R2-D2
He is the original Astromech.
He still stands tall and proud as an amazing addition to any ship that can take him.
Paired with Luke he makes for an INCREDIBLY hard ship to kill.
Paired with Biggs he makes your opponent want to punch you.
His ability is passive - works without using up an action.
For bang for the buck, the regular old R2 astromech is hard to beat. For only 1 point you get all 1- 2- speed manuevers as green manuevers. Really handy on a PTL E-wing or X-wing.
Edited by Jo JoI'm not really a fan of R7-T1. Yes, getting two actions for one is neat, but the restrictions on use... Needing to be inside range 2, and in some ship's firing arc. It's all very situational over just spending 1 more point for an engine upgrade if you want to be able to boost, and you can do it any time then.
I personally feel like the plain old R2 astromech is the best choice. Especially with how stress inducing cards(flechette, rebel captive, R3-A2, and soon Mara Jade...) are getting more popular, expanding your X-wing or E-wing's(or Y-wing too, I guess) green maneuver options to include another 4 choices, for only one point, seems like it's going to be huge to me. And as a bonus, since R2 Astromech makes the 1 forward from being ionized green as well(check the FAQ), you can't get caught in the stress+ionize trap with it.
Edited by OtaconMy top three:
R7-T1
R2-D2
R5-P9
I am seriously in love with Tarn + R7 though!
An R7 on Tarn Mison, absolutely perfect synergy between those two.
But honestly R2-D2 is probably one of the best choices, he is always useful no matter what ship he is put on. R5-D8 is pretty decent as well, as well as the other shield restoring one. But R2-D2 is my favorite.

These are not the droids you are looking for.
C3-P0, hands down. You didn't necessarily say it had to occupy an Astromech slot. ![]()

Yes my Imperial Brother... these weak traitors need their little crutches.

R2 astromech
one point to greatly increase your green maneuver potential
Edited by EffenhoogI've been really liking R3-A2 a lot recently. The ability to stress your opponent whether or not you even do damage is incredible. An E-wing clears stress easily so it fits there, but honestly there are worse things than slow-rolling an X-wing on the first engagement anyway.
It's done wonders for hamstringing Soontir Fel or keeping phantoms from cloaking with their ACD.
I have to agree. R3A2 is pretty much straight amazing. That said, it all depends on the pilot.
With Luke R2D2 or R5-P9 are great, With an E-Wing R2D2 is amazing. With a Y-Wing or E-Wing R7-T1 is amazing, especially with Dutch. With Tarn if you're running him without R7 you've failed. It all comes down to pilot synergy.
Bang for Buck, I love the normal R2. X and E get 4 more green maneuvers, Y gets 6.The more common stress becomes, the more valuable this 1 point upgrade gets.
This isn't to say other droids aren't great, but I think that bang for buck makes this one the "best".
Also, as was said, R7 fits Tarn like the Stress droid fits Hobie. However, R7 is also nice on Biggs since the opponent can't just shoot around the target lock. This is even better on any squad with action sharing/passing (which isn't uncommon with rebels) so he still has focus as well.
