Custom Battlefoam Layout

By Skargoth, in X-Wing

This weekend was the perfect time to finally go all in on the battlefoam. Wave 4 finally dropped, and battlefoam had a sale! I suppose I should have posted during the sale, but I didn't get my own order in until the last day.

The Pack 720 holds plenty of nerdy Star Wars goodness. They have a lot of premade foam for X-wing, but a lot of it is sold with an additional token/dial/template tray that may not be necessary. I prefer a Plano organizer for templates and tokens so I don't need to bag all that crap up between games, just flip it open and grab Focus tokens as needed. Additionally, I have a notebook for pilot and upgrade cards.

The Pack 720 fits 12 inches of foam trays, including the 0.25 inch of foam between each tray. Getting the numbers right was somewhat tricky, but I manage to fill up only 9.5 inches. This left room for one 2 inch (plus .25 inch of foam) tray (which was ordered as pluck foam in anticipation for wave 5) and a 0.25 foam topper. The two inches of foam can be used for tokens or templates if someone desired.

Visual aid, imagining you are stacking the foam in the pack:

Topper - 0.25 inches

Pluck - 2 + 0.25 inches

Utility tray (ship bases, damage decks, dials) - 2 + 0.25 inches

Ship tray 1 - 1.5 + 0.25 inches

Ship tray 2 (same as 1) - 1.5 + 0.25 inches

Epic Tray - 3.5 + 0.25 inches

Total - 12 inches

Space could have been saved by placing some ships vertically in the foam, but I really liked the cutouts. I created a tray that would hold half of the ships I have or may potentially buy and then just ordered two of the same. Ship counts vary, but I tried to base them off point costs and likelihood to buy more (example: I can imagine getting up to 6 B-wings, so placed 3 on the tray creator. More expensive ships like the E-wing or Defender I would probably only get 4 so only placed two on the tray)

One thing to note: when using the tray creator there is a recommended layer of foam that is recommended between each cutout. If the cutouts overlap or are too close the shapes turns red. In some cases this is desired, such as allowing snug slots for the ship bases (see this BBG poster's awesome setup http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/89609/how-best-use-battlefoam).

Sorry for huge picture, my imagefu is weak.

If I missed or was unclear on anything feel free to ask!

TLDR: Look at oversized pictures and see if you find it useful.

These are the ones I designed for my Pack 432. I used generic rectangle and squares instead of the shapes. I was having problems with ships coming out of their slots when I would carry it upright. My plan is to put my ships in tail first. That way when I carry my case by the handle or shoulder strap the ships will be on their bellies.

The 1.5" x 1" slots are for TIE Advanced and Squints. The 2" x 1" slots are for Bombers and the 1.5" squares are for normal TIEs. The 1.5" circle is for my TIE Phantoms. I can add 2 more Defenders and Phantoms in the available space - they stack quite nicely with their cockpits facing each other.

The 1.5" x 1" slots are for all of my fighters except my A-Wings which go into the 1" X 1" squares.

I do have 2 Hawks but these stack very nicely 2 per slot.

Bit late now, but as a suggestion, you could have left you small ship base amounts at 24 since that is the maximum that you will field in any Epic game. Could have left more room for other stuff then.

This is a very interesting subject, and one that can save you a lot of hassle, and money, if you research in advance, so thanks for the info! As i too have a BF bag i thought i would add my experiences and thoughts for my next bag,

I purchased at the time of Wave III a Battlefoam C4 bag;

with the following 2 inch insert;

tray5_zps511b9b9e.jpg

I thought this would be great as the binder on one side held all my cards with some ultra-pro inserts for 9 cards a page. The bag also has lots of pockets for rules etc. At the time i bought it it served my purpose perfectly. Some comments on the bag;

1. The setup of models on one side, and bound cards sleeves on the other is very compact, but often it is inconvenient as most of the time you want to access both compartments at the same time. I think it would be better to have more bag space and simply buy a pre-made ultra-pro card holder and add it on top of the model trays.

2. The single 2 inch try is not ideal - some models are too thin (Y, A, Interceptor), some are ideal (lambda, fire spray) and some would be much better stored vertically rather than horizontally.

3. As i continued to buy models i quickly ran out of space, this bag is simply too small for the amount of ships most gamers have. Also a big issue is that with the molded holes you cant add new ships to existing slots - tie defender for example.

4. The molded shapes for the ships often make it hard to get the ships out, especially spiky ones like the X and B.

5. I now have far too many tokens and asteroids and stuff to fit in the pockets. Now i store them separately in a nuts&bolts plastic storage box.

Given all this i am thinking of ordering a new larger bag, and delegating this C4 bag to attack wing. The 720 is a huge bag, and the 432 is not small either, i only wish i had the ships to fill them.... What i intend to do is buy the Battlefoam spartan bag;

http://uk.battlefoam.com/spartan-bag-custom-load-out/

with 5.5 inch of foam and use the special spartan trays two to a level side by side;

http://uk.battlefoam.com/categories/Spartan-Games-Bags-and-Foam-Trays/Foam-Trays/

This will allow me to mix and match tray heights to ships and also allow me to "cheaply" add new trays in the future for the upcoming waves. I also am looking for a nuts&bolts plastic box to hold tokens etc that is the same size as the trays so that it can fit nicely inside.

The only issue here is that the Tantive wont fit in a spartan sized tray. However, i don't own one yet and if i do get one i think to store it separately anyway as it is a whole different scale to the other ships (the rebel transport is 9 inches long and fits fine). Though i do plan to use some of the custom shape holes Battlefoam offer, in general i will stick to squares/rectangles so as to make the trays mor eversatile and make it easier to extract the models, as zathras23 describes above.

Trey one: the one with the Y wing slots holds the following 10Xs two each in the 1.5"x1.5" squares vertically requires slight modification of backing foam by cutting small slot for engines to sit down into. 10B's, 8 A,s double stacked or 12 triple stacked. 8Y,s double stacked or 12 triple stacked. Note Ys can also be quad stacked with no problem in 1.5" foam.... 2" circles are for dials. has extra 1.5" squares for base pegs etc. the 3.5"x3.5" squares hold ship bases/base card,

Trey Two: 5 or 10'Zs double stacked, 3 falcons, and 5 HWKs.

Trey 3 Two transports and a tantive and 3 to 6E's double stacked, foam is 3" thick so could probably could triple stack E's.

Trey Four: 3 slaves,12 interceptors double stacked,6 advanced double stacked,10 Ties in the 1.5"x5" rectangles. 1.5"x3.5" rectangles are for base storage along with the usual 3.5"x3.5" square for base storage.

Trey five: 8 bombers double stacked. 6 phantoms 6 defenders 4 shuttles.the 1.5" squares and rectangles are just extra slots for whatever..

note each 2" circle will hold 6 dials in 1.5" of foam.

dont know why it wouldn't let me load my pics the normal way??? but it let me link them??? odd...

I didn't know this until the other day but when you buy a P.A.C.K. system with custom foam you can just pick the ones you want right now and then wait until you need more later. So I just got 3 trays and when Wave V comes out I will get more.

As long as the total is under 12" you can pick one and then pick another later. Still have to pay shipping later but that is fine so I don't have to end up with extra trays I don't need.

when i designed mine I designed it so only one faction per trey that way eventually I can go to two bags and have one per faction or go the cheap route and simply store the unused treys in a one of those battle foam cardboard boxes.

I splurged on the weekend and purchased the PACK 720 and the PACK Plus. I'll just make my own gimp foam as postage from the US is too expensive to use BF's trays but this combination will allow me to store all of my X-Wing goodness as well as other game systems for years to come. Being able to attach the Plus to the bottom of the 720 will be very handy as collections grow or shrink.
