Attack successes adding extra damage question

By droz69, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Playing our session tonight for the first time. We read through the rules, but have a question about combat and attack success.

Lets say, for example, a PC is attacking with a heavy blaster rifle with a damage of 10.

The PC rolls 3 successes and 2 failures, scoring a hit. Now, the way the rules read, each success adds 1 extra point of damage.

So, the question I have is, after everything is cancelled out, and only one success remains, do you add +1 damage for that 1 success, which ultimately means the hit got through. Without that success, the hit would have missed. So, is the damage for the weapon really 11 on a standard hit, and then +1 for each success not cancelled after that, or is it just going to be 10 damage, and then each success not cancelled after the initial success gets +1 damage?

I'd like to add that, as the GM, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that a single success adds a damage, whereas it makes more sense for each additional success beyond the ititial adds to damage.

thanks for the answer.

Yes, minimum damage is really base + 1 because you need at least one success to hit. In the end it's a lot easier to just add successes than doing the math of base + successes - 1. Presumably you could do it the latter way so long as you were consistent, but then Soak would be more effective.

I actually don't mind the idea of Soak being a little more effective, but if they added it in the way they did to basically make it so that critters like Minions could easily be taken down with a single hit like that, then I suppose I understand the idea behind it.

I do like the system, I find it very fast. It took us a little to get accustomed to it, but after the first two rounds, we were getting accustomed to it rather quickly. A+ for simple and intuitive design.

Soak is already plenty effective. I'd be wary of anything that increases its effectiveness.
