Flying Corran

By mrkyle, in X-Wing

Hey all. I've yet to use Corran but realize as far as upgrades are concerned, FCS is pretty much a must. That's great for offense when using his ability, but I'm curious about what upgrade(s) help him best defensively on the turns where he can't shoot.Engine upgrade to boos after doing a 5 straight to get further away and start turning around? Elusiveness to modify attackers dice? A simple hull or shield upgrade to add a HP?

Obviously cost is a big factor as Corran is the second most expensive small base ship. What are some thoughts on this?

People around here pretty much always run him with R7-T1. A few also use Push the Limit and/or Advanced Sensors.

I really like the R7 droid on him, at least when you have FCS. Lets you duel a lot better. I took marksmanship on him, and wasn't super impressed, but it was handy, and did modify two attacks several times.

The problem with Corran is he starts expensive, and just gets more so going forward. And though his defensive stats look great on paper they're just as susceptible to bad dice as any other ship, and then your 35+ investment is gone. I think a solid setup for him would be:

Fire Control System

Push the Limit

Engine Upgrade

R2 astromech

And then the idea is to basically fly him like an interceptor; arc dodge and get in close. Save his ability for when you'll actually finish something off, or absolutely need to fire because he's likely to be dead for some reason next turn. I haven't tried it yet but you could conceivably replace R2 and the EU in that build with the unique R7, though the limits on the ability to trigger seem iffy to me...

But that build puts him at 45(43 if you go the R7 route). Push the Limit is mostly to take advantage of being able to both boost and barrel roll, so a slightly more reasonable build would probably be FCS and Marksmanship. Still do what you can to keep him out of arc, focus when you can be shot, marksmanship when you're not, or are in a good position for your followup shot as it applies to both. But at that he's still 40 points...

So really he can probably get away with just a FCS, if you're trying to stay on a budget. I like R2 astromech on E-wings generally because without it, they have 1, 2 and 3 forward and 2 banks to clear stress, which feels a bit limited to me, so probably toss that on too, especially as we keep getting more ways to apply stress.

I've run him a couple times with

Advanced Sensors

PTL

Engine Upgrade

R2

It's a lot of fun, he moves kind of like a phantom and with AS and R2 he almost never takes stress. It's a very tricky build to play but can be absolutely deadly when done right.

As stated above:

R2 Astro

FCS

PtL

Engine

Your defensive options are numerous. If you can get out of arcs you use Boost + Barrel Roll, if you're in the line of fire with no way out Focus + Evade.
