I went to Gatineau on Saturday for my first premier event, a Regional. It was being held at Boutique FDB in Gatineau and let me tell you that as far as FLGSs go, this one was the best one I have seen so far. The right side of the store had custom shelving that held board games like books and the tops of the shelving were waist high, were wide, and doubled as playing surfaces. It had an almost coffee shop feel to it.

Here is the right side of the store with the shelving:

Here is the left side with the game table area:

Grish (who is a carpenter by trade) brought in 2 tablemats that had lighting! I unknowingly helped to bring them in. (I thought I was bringing in tables)

We started just after 11:00 am. It was 5 rounds of swiss with a cut to top 8 with a 30 min break between rounds 2 and 3 for lunch.

My squad was a modified Jim Blakely squad.

3-2-1

3 Bandits

2 Rookies

1 Blue

The advantage to this list is it is a lot of dice. The disadvantage of this list is it’s a lot of dice.

My setup (thanks to the forum poster who suggested using a tray at tournaments. Really helped me out)

Round 1

Opponent: Benoit Phillipe (from Montreal)

Squad

Dutch + Ion + R2

Hobbie + R3A2

Tarn

Rookie

Placed bottom left, he was top right, and we turned and met mid asteroids.

Beginning to mid game I was dominant. I killed the rookie, Hobbie, and put hits on Dutch. But then things went downhill. I could not land any hits on Dutch as I wasn’t getting enough hits on my dice and Dutch was evading them. I had 4-5 rolls that were 1 hit each. I did get Dutch but not before I had too much damage done to my squad. Tarn and 1 Z were left when time was called.

0-1 77 points killed

Round 2

Opponent: Michel

Squad

Han + C3P0 + M.F.

Blue + Adv. S. x2

My goal here was to catch Han with my swarm and focus him down, then take on the B-wings. I setup bottom left again. Michel brought Han down the right side and his blues came from top center down.

I swung right to meet Han and got some hits in on him. I saw his blues coming in so I reversed and went after the blues as it looked like Han would have to circle the bottom left corner for 2 rounds before being able to come back in.

Game changing incident happened here. See if you can spot it with this photo of the early engagement.

http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic2070354_md.jpg

Michel forgot to put a dial down for Han. He had initiative so he moved his blues first. I went and K-turned my bandit behind his blues and then he noticed the YT-1300 dial. I have never experienced this kind of incident before. I called over a judge to give a ruling (I already knew what it was but I didn’t want to be the only authority on it as it was pretty severe in consequence) and Dany came over and said that I would get to pick the maneuver for Han. Half the maneuvers I could pick would send him off the board. I wanted to make top 8 and earn a pair of dice but he had taken out a Z and an X at this point. I decided that the level of the event dictated that I should fly him off the board and I did so.

I told Michel right after that that mistakes do happen but you can learn from them. (I picked a 4 red straight instead of a 4 K with my Y in an AoIA event and flew him off the board. I will never make that mistake again).

I mopped up the Blues 2 rounds later.

1-1 100 points killed

Lunch break.

I talked to players and picked up some cool ideas for equipment modifications.

Cabinet bumpers for ship bases. How neat and simple is that! (thanks to Remi for these two photos of his gear)

Blue Tack for asteroids so they don’t slip.

I was pimping out mini apple strudels as everyone was getting pizza (I'm lactose intolerant and I was trying to find others who had similar issues).

Round 3

Opponent: Adam Hurd

Squad:

Soontir + PTL

Carnor

Howl

Obsidian x 2

I set bottom left and Adam set top right. I went straight up left side while he came straight down the right. Adam turned in to cross the asteroids to get to me while I K turned back down the left side to sweep into him.

We met just as he cleared the asteroids and it was destruction everywhere. Because Carnor was there I took TL everywhere. I had a range 1 shot on turtled Soontir from a Blue with a TL and here is how the dice result went!

http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic2070361_md.jpg

WOW!

It was total awesome sauce by Adam to avoid that smiting blow. I ended up killing everything but an obsidian.

2-1 87 points killed

Round 4

Opponent: Jeff Dunford

Squad:

Howl + S.T.

Mauler + S.T.

Alpha x2

A.P. x 2

We setup opposite on the left side and it was a joust right out of the gate. I played Jeff once before in another tournament and got beat bad. This time around I wanted to at least hit him hard.

Here’s how it went down.

The approach:

The 3 rounds later (with me thinking WTF!):

http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic2070363_md.jpg

It was a bitter defeat as again, I did little damage to Jeff’s squad. My only notes for this round were “Jousted. Got Killed!”

2-2 18 points killed

Round 5

Opponent: Denis Cote

Squad:

Han+ Chewie + C3P0 + Determination + S.D + Clusters

Wedge + S.U. + R2D2 + Adrenaline Rush

(and yes, this is not a typo. That is a stealth device on Han)

I setup bottom left and Han and Wedge were set middle top. I came up and banked in towards center and put many hits on Han (took out all his shields first round). Some Z’z got injured. I swarmed Han and we both whittled each other down. I landed a crit on Wedge that gave him PS 0 which really changed things up. I chased down Han and killed him, leaving me with a Blue with a TL on Wedge and a rookie with 1 hull left. The rookie had to fly around the bottom left asteroid to come back and 4 moved to catch Wedge at range 3, taking his shields off. My blue turned up and caught Wedge in arc, and with TL and a focus it was 3 hits vs 2 evade and 1 hull left on Wedge.

3-2 99 points killed

I came in 12th overall.

I had a fun day and I won a $20 gift certificate in the raffle (which I used to pick up another bomber) 10 evade tokens, and 2 Luke Promo cards.

Awesome report! Interesting to see so many Falcons now in the top, and I like that peopel are using a lot of the Z95 Bandits for the "Rebel Swarm".

What I don't understand is how you weren't able to kill any of that TIE swarm ships in the first round of jousting? Did your dice abandon you completely? 6 ships against 6 ships with Rebels having more shields, the other guy must have rolled all evades or something?

bandits and a falcon with C3-PO and Engine Upgrade? thats nasty

I focused with my Z's and TL with the rookies to make it a tough choice of range one with a focus or range 2 with a TL. Jeff went after the range 2 with the TL and took out a rookie before he could fire.

His list works with low PS for moving (so he was blocking me) and he could fire before me S.T. on two ships so 4 would fire before me. It just ate up my ships like candy.

His red dice were good and mine were below average. His green dice were matching every damage amount while mine were failing me.

I learned to TL with the Z's and Focus with the rookies after that.

Ahh, definitely hate it when the dice kinda fails you and is hot for the opponent. It's definitely making me want to play Rebel more and more since I have shields and hull and lower agility. But flying Rebels is sooooo boring... ;-)
