A Trip Down Shadowblack Lane Part 2

By Staton, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Well to take a break from all the Men with no King talk, I figured I'd post another one of these threads where you post about your favorite, or most memorable cards, or cards that are terrible, or cards that you saw for the first time and just HAD to build a deck around it(even if the deck was an epic fail).

I'll start off with the VED version of Ser Davos Seaworth. One of the more controversial cards to see print, errata or no, he was probably the best version of Davos, although the 5KE one is just as good I think. ~and as any Baratheon player will tell you, he totally didn't need to be unerrated. At least he didn't show up in another house with a new name and 1 less gold. Man am I glad that trend is gone! Anyway, what are some of the cards that are really memorable for the rest of you? Or maybe a card that you saw and it made you want to play this game.

Ambitious Sellsword. So many applications when it was around.

-Great for the flop.

-Auto death for almost any other lannister character.

-Free

-Littlefingers advice on it, with something that gave renown.

-Keep your doomed characters from hitting the dead pile.

It was so much fun to discard Tywin or Ilyn with a free character.

Oh good call there! Which reminds me how much I liked those traitors more than the new 5KE ones. They were much more balanced. Plus, they'd be even better with all the dual house stuff. Could you imagine hitting the QoT with Ambitious Sellsword? Epic Win.

I hated CBK - so i was never a big fan of Davos. I loved Wifdlfire Blade and Swayed by teh Light form that set, though.

And i always liked characters with immunity as opposed to CBK - so Melisandre was a favorite.

But the card I miss the most had to be horesback archers form ACoS. I loved the effect of bouncing cards directly into challenges during the phase. And one of my favorites in standard at the moment is Vale Ward. i don't often build a deck aorund a card, but I built a pretty good one aroudn tehm and winning unexpected power challenges.

I remember Lars using a cancel effect to sned them back to my hand in a GenCon/CTCon warm up match last summer. Too bad neither one os realized I could JUST PLAY THEM AGAIN. They are pretty much still around until this summer, so I really can't say I "miss them" the way I miss HBA.

heh yeah i rember that. i think i was getting something other then just a cancle out of it as i think i used to be a kraken so it was more for the stand then the cancle...but i have no qaulms getting a double bonus due to you're an old fart :D

Well, I haven't been playing for that long, so the cards I know well are ITE and forward. Of those, the one that gives me a smile whenever I see it or put it in a deck is Septon Chayle. The first time I met up with Staglord at Neutral Ground in NYC to play with him and a few others was only the second evening I had ever had playing the game (I had played a few games one evening before with a friend of my brother-in-law to learn the game). I was fortunate to have been able to buy some complete common and uncommon sets of ITE and 5KE cards, but I only had bought a few booster packs, so I maybe had a half-dozen or dozen rares. One of them was Chalye. So, with the Stark decks in the ITE and 5KE starters serving as my foundation and then filling my deck out with what I owned, I tossed in Chalye. I won my first game that evening primarily due to the disruption that Chalye caused to my opponent's challenges. That night and pretty much every other time he's found his way into one of my decks he's been good for at least one "double take" as people forget/can't believe his ability can be triggered even after he's knelt. Chayle is under-appreciated, I think --heck, I've even found myself reluctant to put him in decks and then afterwards happy that I did. he can be a fun and effective card in melee, too, as challenges can sometime be won/lost on narrower strength margins and you can "pimp" him out to other players to swing a challenge they are in their way in return for something.

Good topic, here are some of my favorite cards for deck concepts:

  • Blackwater bay (AROK)
  • Drogon (ITE)
  • knights of the realm (ATOS)
  • wildling siege (WED)
  • Swayed by the light
  • Knight of flowers (ATOS)
  • Qartheeen trader´s guild (I&F)
  • Khal drogo (5KE) - turned out to be awful
  • the power of honor (Talons)
  • Contemplated engagement (Talons)
  • Love is poison (WED)
  • Davos Seaworth (5KE)

I have to go with WED Red Viper. I built several decks around this guy, and it was a Viper kill/discard deck that I used the first time I beat Nate French -- and I did it second turn. I even won a melee match with him on the first challenge of the second turn (though to be fair, it was only against two other players, I played Dorne's Favorite Weapon to cripple them, and Nick-ler was running Character Lite).

After that card, I loved VED Jon Snow. He could be a massive power-grabber as well. His initial errata allowed me to make him First Ranger, and that was just broken. I considered myself very lucky that most folks in my meta didn't think to run Fallen Brother to discard him.

I also miss The Old Gift and The New Gift. I think that those two cards could be tweaked to be legal in the current environment -- higher cost, no reducer ability or something.

I hated CBK, and really didn't like traitors at all. Basically it was a way for someone with less skill at deckbuilding to win (no offense Rave - someone who always had very unique decks!). Hey, my opponent went 1-5 but was playing the traitors against my house only and drew all three in his opening 15 cards! Fun and skillful game!

Favorite cards:

Everyone who knows me knows I will say Interrogate...fun, Nedly, use of Lords/Ladies, could just be a killing.

Narrow Escape - there should always be SOME sort of defense from mass kill/Claim, and this card was perfect. Your opponent could nullify it for a price.

Lion's Claws - still the only counterspell for anything that hits the board. Very underrated in the day.

Fire from the Sky - loved that it hit both, it could be played at any time. Well costed and a good detriment. Solved a lot of problems (CBK, location control, etc.) at the time.

Character...wow...that is tough. I loved old Neutral Oakheart. He just boned people and they were rarely ready for it. I almost always had a small Kingguard subtheme (loved Blount, loved Oakheart...there were other playable ones) and Brotherhood (loved Anguy, loved Beric, loved Mad Huntsman). Self-standing Jaime was great as well - combo'd with a lot of cards!

CBK wasn't very good from a nedly point of view, because I think it runs counter to the fact that ANYONE in Martin's work can die. Still, I rather liked it from a game mechanic point of view. Although I loathed the fact that it was on non-uniques. I liked that the Dragons had it and I think it really helped out on a unique character, it made them alot more useful, although it probably was/is a bad way to make them better.

Also, Rings, I hate Nuetral Oakheart with an intense firey passion. If that card EVER sees print again, I swear I will find every copy and burn it! Gods that card was evil! Andrew abused that card enough the first time around.

You know what card I think needs to come back? The Iron Throne that let you autowin dominance if you were the only one who controlled the Iron Throne. and all the dominance stuff from Throne of Blades. I freakin' loved that stuff! Maybe they should just reprint the whole I&F block. I'd be happy with that.

Ugh. How about a no on the entire I&F block reprint...

LOL

King's Hall

Seal of the Lion

Storm Raiders

Targ burn

There's a whole lot of stuff in I&F block we will probably never see again.

psh! the only card from that list I wouldn't want reprinted is Storm Raiders. Everything else is fine I think. The targ burn never bothered me much. Although I tended to play with more attachments than usual. ~I think Kennon just doesn't want to relive the years before he could build a Tywin Kneel Deck. :P

Hmm Yet another card wish list:

The 5KE House Agendas. -> I really wish they were brought back, I like them. I think they made you think of some clever decks and hacks.

Ancient Arakh

VED Maester Caelotte

ACoS Arrianne Martell

5KE Dragons

5KE or VED Arya... Arya should be scary... and Stark should be an efficient killing machine. I hate playing against Stark, but I feel that I should hate playing against them.

Disposable Ally.... Lanni needs this card in the environment.

Here is My Husband and You Murdered Her Children. ( i would settle for fixing the YMHC, but an event card with its purpose and name should be in the game).

Winter Storm and Outfox. These two plots I feel are necesary.

Greyjoy choke... given that gold now pays for events these days, greyjoy choke should be a viable if not a little hard to pull off theme.

Tully Knights, Dothraki, Clannister, Asshat, and more House Dayne.

Put to the Question... yay in house uniques.

Cards that I HATE (Imagine Hook raging against Peter Pan).

I HATE I HATE AToS Barristan Selmy! worst response to Targ Burn ever!

I HATE I HATE The Twins.... way to slow down the game.

Nah, I&F would give me access to things like The Rains of Castamere, Humiliation, and Seal of the Lion. And if we go further into the block, Envoy of Highgarden as well. Nah, I&F was pretty good too me. Oh and Treachery. Can't forget it.

Winter Storm does need to come back. Baratheon has this neat discard exploitation theme scattered throughout LCG block, but no way to really take advantage of it. Bleeds is touch to get off in teh environment - that 4 influence can be a problem.

You're nuts if you think 5K arya shoudl ever see light of day again.

You know, I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one stags. She's would be fine in LCG only. Limited influence, and not nearly as much combo potential as in standard. Sure she'd be awesome, and pretty annoying, but not broken or anything. Plus I think there deserves to be at least one good stalwart card in LCG.

Also, Winter Storm really does need to always be legal. Winter Storm and Wildfire both do. I'm iffy on Valar. I like it, but I don't think it needs to always be legal. It does help Greyjoy a ton in standard though.
