[Scratchbuild] Guess the model!

By MacrossVF1, in X-Wing

A very rough draft, no idea on points. Possibly adding a Sensor upgrade as a Tractor Beam option. The 4 crew are meant to represent the passengers. It is a similar size to the Decimator so Agility 0 seems appropriate. It has very good shields and possibly could recharge these by performing a slow 1 straight maneuver, possibly at the expense of shooting.

EDIT: Alternatively the rule could be "add one evade result if attacked in your fire arc". This would represent the strengthened forward shielding that it has.

Couldn't find time to work on it yesterday so no picture for tuesday. However today there has been progress. The detailing stage has finally begun!

I think the dial would look like like the Lambda or Hawk 290.

this reminds me of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Tours

I even bought the toy ship when I was there as a kid, it has opening doors and everything!

Ah, memories...

Here is a good video if you haven't seen the ride itself:

EDIT:

Guess they decommissioned the original star tours, and made a new one with 54 separate adventures. Here is a good video of some of them:

I rode the first iteration of the Star Tours in Disney Land Paris way back in 1995. It was so damned cool!

Another update.

Man! That's coming along really nicely. You're good at it.

The Gamma is a ship that I have felt they should produce for a while, and it has a significant presence in both the (older?) video games as well as the RPGs. Given that we have huge ships, boarding actions would be an awesome addition. I'm certainly liking where DB Draft is taking the rules. But, I wouldn't be too surprised if they come out with a Gamma-shuttle in the not-too distant future. Next year, perhaps.

However, in case they don't, I wouldn't mind getting in on the ground floor with the fan-produced stuff, such as what you're making.

Now, if you do get thing built and it looks really nice, would you consider making a mold and casting copies of it? I would be interested in purchasing one or two off you if the price wasn't too crazy.

Now... how annoyed are you going to be when they introduce this ship in Wave 6? I think the Gamma-class would be an awesome part of epic play as a way to capture the rebels' huge ships. I'm so jonesing for that to become a thing.

Making a mould? Now that might be something to consider.

If they were to introduce it in a later wave, I might get a bit annoyed but on the other hand I get to be the absolute first person to play with it. Little loss, big win! :) Though if a craft with boarding capability emerges I'd suspect the DX-9 transport or the Gamma ATR-6 transport to be chosen first.

Please let me know when your consideration starts becoming serious.

I would hope that the DX-9 or the ATR-6 does not come first. Why should they? (I guess I say this because I'm versed in the RPG more than the video games.) That said, 'first' is probably the wrong word. They will, I am sure, only do one assault shuttle if they do an assault shuttle at all.

Making a mould would require me to learn quite a number of things seeing as I've never done it before. I do like a challenge though and I'm not afraid to learn new stuff. Who knows, it might be fun.

Or you could send it to me to mould and cast for you. ;)

I'm sure if you have the skill to make the model to begin with, you can figure out how to mold and cast. (I hear rubber is the substance of choice.)

Or you could send it to me to mould and cast for you. ;)

Or this.

Making molds is really easy if you are already adept at scratchbuilding. You want to use rtv silicone for the two part mold and urethane resin to cast. I'm sure many of us can give you pointers.

I take it that it would be trickier if the ship was fragile with lots of thin things standing out of it. If he does the aft-side satellite dishes that might be a problem, but the rest of the model is built like a brick.

I'm currently looking into how to make a mould and where I can get the materials needed. BTW I choose this particular model BECAUSE it was a brick. Easier to build. :) In any case, here is today's update. The underside is almost complete now.

Some great work there on your assault shuttle, I still have some "bad' memories of those things from X-Wing Alliance, if the Ion cannons weren't bad enough. The Zero-G Space Troopers it would deploy made it a hell of a tough fight, all those troopers equipped with lasers and mini-proton torpedo launchers.

Not the final update on the build but it's getting close. There's really only minor details, the engines and the guns to add and the cannons are actually finished, just not mounted yet. If I don't go out and buy some bigger plastic tubing I won't be able to finish the engines. I'm debating on whether or not to add the satellite dishes that can be seen on some versions of the ship as I believe they would just be fragile and break all the time.

If you are in the uk, give me a shout, and I can direct you to a well priced supplier who does a kit with everything you need for about £45. Enough resin included to make many many ships. :)

I live in Sweden but I'm certainly no stranger to buying from the UK. Some things are a good deal cheaper when buying from the isles and 45 quid sounds fairly good. Do you have a link you could share?

This is looking good. Keep up the postings, please.

When you are pouring the second part of the mould, you paint the joining face of the first part with Vaseline to stop the silicon joining together. Nothing kinky I'm afraid, unless you are casting something kinky...

Mold making is very easy. And since you obviously have hobby skills - great job by the way - you should have no problem. The main thing to remember when making the mold is that you will be pouring resin into it. Gravity will be your primary way of getting resin into all the nooks and crannys and if some detail is in a place where resin will not flow it will not be in your cast. What I always do is look at the model I am going to cast before I make my mold and imagine filling it with water. I take a piece of card or paper and slowly move it up the model as if it was the water line as I fill it. If any section or detail is ever "cut off" from the rest of the "water line" as it goes up the model that bit will not cast and the model will have to be reoriented before you cast it. This model is as you have said "a brick" and should not be a problem. Also another thing to think about is your pour point. When you pour a model there will be a bit of "sprue" where you poured it in that will have to be cut off and sanded down. You do not want this point to be on top of any details or hard to sand areas. Idealy it will be on a flat surface that is easy to work on. You can then just cut if off, sand it down flat and you are ready to paint(after you wash it well to get all the mold release off)

Dang it, now you have ruined my pre-conceived notions of vaseline. :P

BTW here is the final update of the build. It is lightly sprayed with black to make it easier for me to see any flaws though on the photos it can be harder to see details so I edited them slightly to be brighter. As for making a mould, I probably have to hold off on that. Unless a fair amount of people want to buy this model, it's just too expensive to consider (at least it is here in Sweden).

Looks great mate! Hope you put up one more *final* post of it painted up and ready to vape some Rebel scum!
