[Scratchbuild] Guess the model!

By MacrossVF1, in X-Wing

So for my next project I decided to build something from scratch and I'm going to post updates just about every day so you can follow the build. However, for a little extra fun I decided NOT to tell what it is I'm building. Let's see if you Star Wars experts can figure it out quickly. A (digital) cookie to the first one to guess right. :)

That was my guess even before I scrolled down to see your post. However, you clearly got there first.

Should have known that I could not fool the collective wisdom of the Internet people. :D

BTW what should I use it for? I obviously can't use it in competitive play but in friendly matches it should pose no problem. Is it a Lambda or would it be better to classify it as a Decimator when it comes out?

And it only took 6 minutes.

Also is this ship anything like the Assault Transports from TIE Fighter?

If I remember correctly it did feature in X-Wing Alliance. The very similarly named Gamma class ATR-6 assault transport could be found in TIE Fighter.

Yeah, that's the chap I'm talking about. I always nicknamed 'em "Orcas".

Use em in place of Tie Defenders. Since those things have missles and cannons, right?

I can see them being a really cool Large ship with hardpoints. Maybe a turret and two hardpoints. Also, it would be a prime ship to introduce Ion Cannon laser weapons that could also be used on the CR-90.

I don't know why you would want to use the miniature as a proxy for existing miniatures.

Come up with original stats for it. Maybe you can even find some that people already came up with.

Lambda definetly. They're a troop transport for god's sake.

I like using senator shuttles as placeholders for DX-9s. If I ever needed them armed I can say they have the appropreate upgrade (attack 2 normally? Or a never ending magazine of warheads. Can't turn or dodge much so...).

For ATR-6s maybe give them attack 3 turret for a primary but only like 1 agility. These things were nightmarish to approach head on.

Can't help you with the Gammas. Never ran into those flying boxes.

From the WEG Imperial Sourcebook it is only 30m long so really just a large ship. It is used to ferry 40 Spacetroopers, so these troops would need to be part of the rules. The shuttle is very heavily shielded (uses up to 62% of available power for shields where normal ships only use about 25%). It uses tractor beams and magnetic harpoons to capture ships. It is armed with a laser turret, tractor beam projectors and concussion missile launchers.

Maybe it could be able to recharge shields as a special action.

No. Just no. 'Homemade' ships are far too often the lovechild of some fanboy and suffers from unbalanced stats and/or pointcost. By using an existing ship I get a perfectly good ship that no one will protest facing.

I wish FFG would make one... With a way to represent boarding actions they would make a great addition to epic play imho.

Boarding Party

Crew

"When this ship overlaps a[n ionized?] large or huge ship, discard this card to deal one face up damage card."

2pts[?]

Then, give the ship the stats and dial of a Lambda, probably with engine upgrade. Boom!

Edit: Except that's not quite right because forgoing shooting to do one damage at the cost of an upgrade card doesn't seem worth it. It might have to be more points, but not discarded.

Heh. This could be cool.

Boarding:

Action: Select 1 enemy ship within range 1. Roll 3 attack dice. For every [hit] result, flip one crew upgrade or team upgrade facedown. For every [critical hit] result, discard one crew upgrade or one team upgrade.

Boarding could be a very interesting addition to the game although I feel it is unlikely to happen as it perhaps would detract from the dog fighting aspect of the game.

Ok, first update. The build is progressing smoothly

Well, there's a dogfighting and mission aspect to it as well for those who want that out of it. Also some of those sides look a bit rough. Gonna sand 'em down?

Some? Heh! You could say that. :) The model is currently in the filing and sanding stage, so yes it will become far nicer to look at. In fact, it will become as smooth as a baby's arse.

Okay - sure, if you're just trying to add novelty to you 6-asteroid-100pnt-death-match, then sure, use the rules to an existing ship. At that point, have it be a stand-in for a Firespray, or anything you'd like.

I figured you were creating it as something to use in a mission. That's what I'd like to do when/if I make a model of something.

Now, if you do get thing built and it looks really nice, would you consider making a mold and casting copies of it? I would be interested in purchasing one or two off you if the price wasn't too crazy.

I would then look to either making fanboy rules for it, or inviting other people to make some for me. As a part of missions, I'm not that concerned with point cost/game balance.

Now... how annoyed are you going to be when they introduce this ship in Wave 6? I think the Gamma-class would be an awesome part of epic play as a way to capture the rebels' huge ships. I'm so jonesing for that to become a thing.

Making a mould? Now that might be something to consider.

If they were to introduce it in a later wave, I might get a bit annoyed but on the other hand I get to be the absolute first person to play with it. Little loss, big win! :) Though if a craft with boarding capability emerges I'd suspect the DX-9 transport or the Gamma ATR-6 transport to be chosen first.

Anyway, here's the latest update though I don't have much to show since it's the boring filing and sanding phase. Still, it means that I can soon add details.

Do you mind if people begin speculating on stats for this thing and posting them here?

Nah, that is not a problem, speculating what might, or might not be, should FFG release it, can be a fairly interesting exercise for the mind.
