Upgrade Slot/Action based modifications?

By R22, in X-Wing

So Rebel Aces introduces the Chardaan Refit, providing a service (-2 squad points) in exchange for an upgrade slot (bye bye missiles). Interestingly enough, it's a title card and not a straight modification so A-wings can still take a stealth or shield modification etc. Likewise, in the Pilot Building Forum Game (which is awesome), people have shown some pretty innovative ideas that have got me thinking.

What about modification cards that swapped, exchanged, or otherwise "costed" either slots or actions? For example:

[Modification]

Reconnaissance Package (2pts)

Small ship only

You gain a systems slot, up to a total of 1, in exchange for a secondary weapons slot.

or

[Modification] (2pts)

Slaved Targeting Systems

Small ship only

Your action bar gains the target lock action, in exchange for the barrel roll action.

In the first example the systems slot is gained at the expense of a secondary weapon but includes a 2pt tax on the implied systems upgrade. In the second, a non-native action is gained in exchange for a native, preventing OP buffs and forcing the player to likely exchange a ship characteristic naturally suited to it. I know not everybody is a fan of costing through upgrade slots but I think requiring a point tax and/or a native trade keeps each ship's unique identity largely intact. You couldn't abuse it because it would either weaken the ship's very nature or become so expensive it cripples your whole list. Furthermore, if they are modification cards, it also "costs" any of the traditional potential modifications. In the mean time it would allow for minor tweaks and represent a "starfighter garage" representing refits that happen across both factions.

I'm sure some combinations can be thought of where such a swap would create a monster OP ship given other upgrades, etc. but that seems easily countered. Maybe Reconasissance Package is only for ships with a hull of 3 or less, is meant just for generics, or PS < X. Whatever.

Thoughts?

Actually Chaardan is a Missile but not a secondary weapon. So you can take it and the Test Pilot title. Which is nucking futs.

Your target lock mod is redundant. It costs the same as targeting computer but also eats the barrel roll ability. Why would anybody take it. Maybe at cost 0.

That said, the idea is sound but it should be that slot. A torpedo that gives a missile slot for 1 point would be cool. Dropping actions is tougher though.

The Chardaan Refit isn't a Title or Modification. It's actually a Missile upgrade. Which is important if you want to use the Prototype Pilot title or any of the other good Modifications for the A-wing.

The Chardaan Refit isn't a title, it's a missile slot upgrade. I think it might work to have upgrades that change one slot type to another, such as missile into torpedos and viseversa, but it could lead to some broken, OP combinations as well. It would probably need to be done for a specific ship, like Chardaan Refit, rather than general upgrades, available to everything.

I cannot think of a ship flipping topedos dor missiles or vice versa would break. But some other ones, like adding system upgrades, would need some serious though. Advanced Sensor Firesprays would be scary.

Okay, I know Chardaan Refit is a missile upgrade and not a modification, I just meant it introduced the concept of exchanging slots in the first place. As for my TL example, it's just a throwaway example to illustrate the point. I'm asking people what they think of the concept in general -- having modifications that swap slots or actions. The reason I didn't suggest missiles for systems like Chardaan is that on one ship you might want to swap for systems and for another turrets etc. By making it a modification and not a direct one for one you 'cost' the modification slot (except on RG TIE/ints) and don't have to print variations of every upgrade.
