Can't beat my friend

By hanasolo, in X-Wing

His basic idea is to fly very slow in one corner and collect as many focus tokens as he can.

I am very new to this game still. Just starting to understand and appreciate the meta. But I am stumped, what does the OP mean by "collect as many focus tokens as he can"? I thought unused focus tokens were removed at the end of each round.

They are, except on a HWK with the Moldy Crow title equipped.

Do you have a moment to discuss our lord and savior Kyle Katarn?

But seriously. HWK/Kyle/Moldy Crow. You will squat and defecate focus. You want that. All the focus. Furrow the brow. Angry-laser-eye focus to friendlies.

ANGRY-LASER-EYE THEM.

all his ships can barrel roll. My guess is he is beating you by getting out of arcs. Try a high PS build. Makes all his rolling shenanigans worthless. And you can do some of your own.

you can dodge him all day. Just be sure to take down the hawk first to get rid of the turret.

The expert handlings will stress him out, abuse that. Goad him into using it when it's a suboptimal choice. A few Target Locks for instance, Rebel Captive might be nice. Jek will blow himself up.

Oh sweet, sweet Jeebus. Your opponent is just begging, begging to get Interceptor'd.

I've seen suggestions for Carnor Jax in here and Soontir Fel. You absolutely can't go wrong with them. But you need to make sure the rest of the list is a credible threat.

You can take my Red Eye Flight for a spin.

Soontir Fel + RGT + Shield + Targeting Computer + PtL (36)

Carnor Jax + RGT + Shield + Hull + whatever EPT you want (if a 4 point EPT is taken, he comes to 37 points)

Kir Kanos + Hull (27)

Or if you want more numbers, just dump one of those high PS pilots, and use the extra points to get some filler.

Mauler Mithel + Expert Handling

Dark Curse

Together they come in at only 35 points, so you could afford a Shield for Kir instead of a Hull. But all of these listed pilots should fire before at least one opponent assuming you have initiative.

But the list isn't so much the thing as how it's flown. I'd deploy on a side opposite his chosen corner with the higher PS pilots like fel or jax. slow play your "jousters", and zoom forward with your flankers. get behind the opponent formation as soon as possible. This forces one of two behaviors: either your opponent leaves them along to continue flying straight forward, and the Interceptors have an absolute field day firing at the rear of a moldy crow (ioning them actually helps you, as it does only one damage and allows you to stay on the Crow's tail when normally you'd be too fast to do this for more than a turn or two). Or, your opponent is forced to turn the formation to face them. If they turn the whole formation, your guys approaching from the fore get fire drawn away from them. If he turns only part of the formation, then congratulations: they've just done something supremely stupid, and he's only got part of his fleet firing separately on some of the most squirrelly ships in the galaxy.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like your opponent has lots of maneuvering practice or is wholly clever, just that they've got one play and they stick with it. Outmaneuvering them should be a breeze.
