Lt. Blount

For this card, I can't tell what it is saying. I am a bit new on this game. How can I hit without giving damage?

Is this to be interpreted that when I fire my two red dice and the defender has two evade dice, the defender still is dealt a damage card or removes a shield?

Thank you,

Hit doesn't mean you do damage. There's a lot of effects in the game that are based on a hit. Like removing stealth device or the age from assault missiles.

With Blunt you could roll no hits but still hit[/]b]. Or the defender could roll enough evades to counter your crit/critical rolls. But with him you still would Hit.

Hitting a target and dealing damage are two different concepts which happen to overlap a lot.

Rulebook page 12 defines a hit: If there is at least one uncanceled [hit] or [crit] result remaining, the defender is considered hit.

That concept does not reference damage at all.

Most of the time if an attack hits the target also suffers damage. Blount is one exception. If his attack would normally miss (and cause no damage) it hits instead (still causing no damage).

So far there are four instances in which his ability matters:

  1. Target with Stealth Device.
  2. Blount with Assault Missile.
  3. Blount with Ion Pulse Missile.
  4. Blount with Munitions Failsafe. (Munitions Failsafe on Blount is a waste of a perfectly good point.)

Have a look at Blount's card with each of the 4 options above and imagine your opponent has just rolled enough evades to cancel all your dice. But, your attack still 'hits', just as a non-damaging hit. Now the extra conditions on those upgrades kick in.

Stealth Device is stripped away. Assault Missiles explode damaging every ship at range 1 of the defender. Ion Pulse missiles NEVER miss with Blount. And Munitions Failsafe never gets a look in, because you always 'hit'.

Just because you may not get to deal a damage card based on the dice, but it may come from another source. Very handy.
