Wave 5 At the Printer

By ixdta39, in X-Wing

I believe current expectations will be Wave 5 Available at GenCon as a "pre"release sale and the actual release a week or two later, as well as Imperial Ship unveiling at GenCon as well

We may even see a Wave Six announcement, for this reason: a week or two before Imperial Aces was due to ship, we got the Rebel Aces announcement. About 2 weeks before Wave 4 shipped, we got the Wave 5 announcement. They may follow suit. Who knows.

Wave 5 just went to print, and Gen Con is only a little over a month away. Even Rebel Aces is looking shaky for an August/September release, unless it hits the boat in the next week and a half. I wouldn't get my hopes up for wave 5 at Gen Con.

I am willing to bet the rest of Wave 5 will be previewed at Gencon. My gut, (and Im not slim, so its a lot of gut) is telling me that Wave 5 is more than 2 releases.

FFG is being quiet coy about this wave. I can't help but thinking they are saving a surprise for Gencon. Especially since the last day of Gencon is the 2 year aniversary of the game....

Too big a coincidence to ignore. :)

August yes. End of September. That's pretty rock solid. A month on the boat and two weeks to ship gives us a month before they need to hit the boat for mid september.

YUP.

Can we please stop the more ships in Wave 5 belief? If more ships are coming, they will likely be released separate. A part of why we get info so early is that FFG prefers to release info rather than the info leaking out from retailer's order pages (see Wizkids). Wave 5 is 2 ships, otherwise I'm certain we would've gotten information from retailers.

As for Wave 5 at Gencon, I'm sure they will have some. I mean, they had Netrunner a good 2 months before release. We will just have to see how much they fly over. And considering how quick the Transport and Tantive were, mid August looks likely for Rebel Aces.

And FFG will have plenty of fun reveals at Gencon. The only question is what.

That is going to be fun!

Even though the article says that Wave 5 is two ships... they didn't NOT say that there won't ALSO be a TARDIS, Galactica, and the Guardians of the Galaxy as well, so they COULD be surprising us with all that plus giant space elephants, because FFG didn't DENY those things.

My money is on the following for Gencon reveals:

Imperial Huge Ships

Remainder of Wave 5 ships.

Announcement of a 3rd faction

I am very excited to see what they do. And how these forums blow up with cries of DOOOOM from all the Chicken Littles. :)

Nah... you got it completely wrong!

They are gonna show us the MY LITTLE PONIES VERSION OF THE GAME!

Can I ask where everyone is getting their definitive proof from? I dont see an article. I see 2 items whose status switched to At the Printers.

Yes, 2 items that have been switched to the printers. And there has been no word about anything else. IF there was more to Wave 5, we would've heard about it. Because the retailers would've have received info on it if Wave 5 had more ships that would be releasing at the same time. It really isn't too hard to figure out why we get this info so far ahead of time. It's because the info would be out there anyway, due to retailers getting information to place pre-orders. Rather than let retailers let out some vague information, FFG puts out the announcement articles, with some more information, in order for us to get excited, and hopefully convince our local stores to get order said product.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of two new starships for X-Wing !

Perhaps they'll announce wave six with two ships in it to cover those last two missing SKUs.

Either way I like the change I the meta that wave four brought this far and can't wait to see what else is in store for us and how it will shake things up even further

I can dig it... they can release new goodies every-other month as far as I am concerned.

:)

As awesome as it is that we will be getting the ships sooner, I feel like it's too fast. We just got Wave 4. Waiting another 6 months for them won't be too agonizing if it takes that long. To be honest I hope they don't hit till the end of the year. The more new things are quickly added into a game the worse it can get. FFG has been doing a good job so far though.

Hey now, some of us got into x-wing for the starships (ala cr-90) as opposed to just the starfighters for fleet skirmishes and would like to see more options for large ships in standard tournaments. Plus, some of us have been wanting a vt-49 decimator model since the release of jump to lightspeed in pre-nge galaxies (as well as hopefully an incom x-4 gunship for the rebels, but that's another wave & discussion entirely). :)

I'm not saying I don't want these models to come out. In fact I really really do, but this is coming from a game health stand point. If something new comes out every month and shakes up the meta it will be bad because most likely the releases won't get the playtesting that they need or as a player base we will all get swamped with the options presented to us making everything a sort of wild west. None of these states are desireable for a game.

I see a lot of people setting themselves up for disappointment in this thread.

I agree, I'd like if major releases are 4-6 months apart, maybe with a minor release like an Aces set in between. The issue is they have to be consistent, and they have to release when FFG says they will release. Now they have the most popular game they've ever had, so it makes perfect sense that they are releasing faster. We can live with this as long as releases aren't rushed.

Having said that, I fully trust that they are NOT rushing anything with Wave 4 OR Wave 5, for this reason: at the time they announce a set, it has already been extensively playtested. You know how I know? Because the card text is always visible in the spread images, and when you compare the final release text with the partial text in the spread, it is rarely different. Which means, that in Wave 4, all of the Card Text was finalized in February when it was announced, and further playtesting occurs to finalize point values for upgrades that are not yet final. It also means that they can immediately begin playtesting their next wave months ahead of its release and even its announcement because the previous Wave is all but finalized. They announced Wave 5 the first week of June, but they have been testing it on the table with Wave 4 and all previous waves at least as early as the Wave 4 announcement.

It's going to be fine.

Also, something to keep in mind, the release schedule doesn't exactly have to follow the playtesting schedule. Take FFG's LCGs, for instance. Monthly releases. But FFG does not playtest them in 20 card chunks for a month. They playtest the entire cycle at once. With smaller Waves now, I wouldn't be surprised if they are playtesting more than one product at a time.

Slow down FFG! I promise I won't stop buying your stuff. At least give me a chance to start to settle into the new ships before you start sending more stuff. The game has so many options now there is no reason to push stuff out this fast. New content every 6 months would be more than enough to keep me satisfied.

The two turreted ships in wave 5 definitely feel like a calculated response to the Phantom.

It really does make sense that Wave 5 was playtested with wave 4. I mean Dash rendar's PS7 is clearly on par with Whispers so that he doesn't clearly invalidate Phantoms with the Heavy Laser Turret. Meanwhile it gives Imperials a Falcon Equivalent that can shoot before Whisper but costs a tone. It's very clever really.

And Dash can play in the asteroids and use his large base to make such things even more complicated for Whisper/Echo, since Phantoms are probably the small ship that hates asteroids the most (Yes swarms due too but a single lone Tie fighter not as much as a Phantom)
