Synergistic 100 Point Squad

By Rignuth, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Ok here's my first public 100 point squad, opened to critiques:

Z95: Airen Cracken (19), Veteran Instincts (1) = 20 Pts. (PS 10)

XWing: Garven Dreis (26), no upgrades = 26 Pts. (PS 6)

YWing: Dutch Vander (23), R2-D6 (1), Draw their Fire (1), Blaster Turret (4) = 29 Pts. (PS 6)

XWing: Biggs Darklighter (25), no upgrades = 25 Pts. (PS 5)

So the basic format is that the 4 ships fly in a "Y" formation, with Airen and Garven at the front, Biggs is parked behind them, and Dutch Vander is at the back.

Action Resolution:

-Airen Cracken focuses

-Garven Dreis focuses

-Dutch acquires a TL and then gives hi TL to Airen

-Biggs focuses to protect against being shot at

Shooting:

-Airen shoots, using his focus and TL to hit somebody (hopefully). He then uses his ability to give Dutch a Free action, which dutch uses to establish a TL again, based on the new placement of enemy ships and the results of Airen's shot. Dutch then TL's again, and in doing so, gives a TL to Garven

-Garven now shoots with both a focus and a TL. He uses his focus and gives it to Dutch.

-Dutch now shoots with a focus and TL. If he has an enemy behind or flanking, he uses the Blaster Turret, otherwise shoot forward and hang on to the focus for defense. The point is he has the option to use the focus for offense or defense.

-Biggs shoots at targets of opportunity but basically keeps his focus for defense

Roles:

All ships obviously have a synergistic role, which I like playing games that have that kind of inter-connected synergy.

Biggs is there to Tank

Dutch is there to offload crits from Biggs, with 8 hit points total.

Thoughts?

Dutch won't be able to do two TL actions in one round...That being said you might use Cracken's ability on Dutch to focus so that with Garven's passed focus, Dutch can TL + Focus a blaster turret attack. Or you could give Biggs a TL from Cracken and let him be more offensive.

All in all an interesting list with lots of things happening. Definitely worth a test run or two

Why can't Dutch do his TL action twice in a round? I realize he can't maintain 2 TLs per round, but he can do the action twice right?

It's in the FAQ on page four under acquiring a target lock and page eight under expert handling:

"A ship can only perform one 'acquire a target lock' action per round"

And

"A ship can only perform the same action once per round"

It's also worth noting that if Dutch already has a target lock on a ship, he cannot acquire a target lock on the same ship to trigger his ability. He'd have to target lock a different ship per page 10

Wow thanks ixdta39, that's great to know! (about performing same action only once per round).

I did know the bit about Dutch only being able to lock on to a different ship.

Related question: If an ability, or synergy of abilities, gives you the opportunity to acquire a target lock more than once per round (not necessarily by using the "Acquire Target Lock Action" then that is legal to get more than one target lock per round, right?

Yes you're correct. You can acquire a target lock on airen cracken after the movement phase and take a focus on Dutch after movement. And then during the attacking phase you can spend your target lock on cracken and then use his free action ability to let Dutch now take a target lock and let cracken acquire a target lock. All perfectly legal

Related question: If an ability, or synergy of abilities, gives you the opportunity to acquire a target lock more than once per round (not necessarily by using the "Acquire Target Lock Action" then that is legal to get more than one target lock per round, right?

AcquireAction

In this game "Acquiring a X Token" and "Performing X Action" are two different things

Ummm...ok. It just says on page 9 of my X Wing rule book "Ships with [icon] in their action bar may perform the ACQUIRE A TARGET LOCK action...."

I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to convey.

Specifically 'acquire a target lock' is not the same as performing the 'target lock action'. The first one is gaining the tokens while the second is using an action to gain the tokens. You can do only the same action once per round but you can gain the tokens as many times as possible.

See page 4 of the FAQ: Acquire a Target Lock.

Yeah, I understood that part, but thanks for the confirmation.

Let me ask you a more nuanced question, though, since I have some experts here.

Imagine a CR90 equipped with (among other things): Sensor Team (TL at Range 1-5), a Weapons Engineer (can maintaing 2 TL's) and a Targeting Coordinator (acquire TL and then give the blue token to a friendly ship at range 1-2).

You also have Dutch in your squad.

1. With the CR90, during the Energy Phase, you allocate energy and spend 1 Energy to use your Targeting Coordinator (not an action).

2. You then pick 2 targets at up to Range 5, and get a TL on both of them.

3. You then give one of your blue TL tokens to Dutch.

4. Does Dutch's ability now activate? (when you acquire a target lock, choose another friendly ship at range 1-2, they may acquire TL). At a glance the answer might seem like "yes", but under careful examination I'm not so sure. It seems that "acquire a target lock" is a distinct phrase with a specific and explicit meaning. Is Dutch, in this scenario "acquiring a target lock" or just receiving a blue TL token?

Dutch is receiving a blue TL token. He did not acquire a target lock, which has the required 4 steps layed out in the rule book on page 9, he only received a blue TL token so his ability would not trigger.
