Worst Build Imaginable

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Suppose you are going to play a friend, or perhaps do a "special" tournament where you design a squad that someone ELSE will use. You will then, end up using a squad designed by someone else.

You must use all points, (If possible). If you end up with a 99 point squad and there simply isn't anything to go on that last point then 99 is ok, but you should try to get 100 if possible.

Also you probably need to create a squad that people CAN field. I don't know anyone who has 6 HWKs for example.

(Should there be some kind of limit per ship type? Like only 1 of any particular ship?)

Only other rule I think would be to say that you can't give a ship an "Upgrade" that it already has: IE no targetting computer to an X-Wing, no Engine Upgrade to an A-Wing, etc.

What squad would you create:

Marek Steele and three Storm Squadron Pilots (all with Munition Failsafe) = 99 points (give Steele Munitions Failsafe to get to 100 points).

Not too many people have 4 Advanced that would be able to field that though. (I have 6 myself however! )

Here's what I came up with:

Kyle Katarn + Outmaneuver + Luke Skywalker + Shield Upgrade (35)
Tycho Celchu + Adrenaline Rush + Shield Upgrade (31)
Horton Salm + R7-T1 + Shield Upgrade (32)
= 98 points. Nothing left that is currently out that I could fill those last 2 points with.

I'd run a two Hawk, 2 Y list with no turrets and double advanced proton torpedos on each y wing. Plus a gunner on the Hawks even though it puts them overpoints. Because it still can't beat anything.

Well. I have 4 Hawks.... so that's 64 points right there :D

100 points

Rebel Operative + Leia + Engine Upgrade

2x Rebel Operative + Flight Instructor + Engine Upgrade

Kyle Katarn + Navigator + Engine Upgrade

6 HWKs

4 base rebel operatives

2 rebel operatives with saboteur

I can't think of a worse build than that.

Kagi with Autoblaster, Vader, Navigator, Advanced Sensors and Stealth Device

Jonus with Expose

Rhymer with Expose

I'm also assuming that you can't give upgrades like Targeting Coordinator or Stygium Particle Device to ships without Energy or Cloak.

I think it all kinda depends. I think there two ways to approach this basically. There is a rude approach where you just want pure awful and don't care that someone has to actually play it....

And there is the approach where you give each ship upgrades that will indeed matter - just not particularly good ones. Like, no targeting computers on an X-Wing is very similar to no Particle Accelerator to a ship that can't cloak....

I wouldn't choose 6 HWKs for example, because of 2 reasons:

1) I doubt most people have more than 2 of them...

and

2) I'd like to see people play each other with really BAD squads, but FIND a way to make them work. The HWK is almost TOO bad on it's own though. Naked it is completely worthless. Bombers and Y-Wings with nothing secondary is more the spirit that I'm thinking of.

I realize this uses unreleased content, but I think this may be the worst:

Dash Rendar — YT-2400 36

Expose 4

Autoblaster 5

Luke Skywalker 7

Stealth Device 3

Outrider 5

Gold Squadron Pilot — Y-Wing 18

R2-F2 3

Stealth Device 3

Rebel Operative — HWK-290

A ship that can only attack at range 1, and has luke, which will likely never trigger if it ever does get an attack because of autoblaster. 2 ships with stealth and 1 base agility, y-wing can lose it's action to get 1 more defense die which is pretty awful. No turrets on the HWK or y-wing.

Best I could do with own personal Imperial collection:

  • Fel's Wrath (23)
  • Maarek Steele (27) + homing missiles (5) + Expose (4)
  • Major Rhymer (26) + advanced proton torpedoes *2 (12) + proximity mines (3)

And for my Rebels...I don't have a HWK, so I was somewhat limited:

  • Arvel Crynyd (23) + homing missiles (5)
  • Outer Rim Smuggler (27) + stealth device (3) + Luke Skywalker (7)
  • Horton Salm (25) + R2F2 (3) + stealth device (3) + proton torpedoes (4)

How about this

Captain Jonus

2x Advanced Proton Torpedoes

2x Assault Missiles

Proton Bombs

Daredevil

Engine Upgrade

Major Rhymer

Advanced Proton Torpedoes

Proton Bombs

Expose

Stealth Device

100 Points

Rebel List:

Kyle Katarn with Luke, Expose, Blaster Turret and Engine Upgrade

Horton with Stealth Device, Blaster Turret, R2-D6 and Expose

Green Squadron (or Lt Blount) with Expose

For Imperials :

  • Major Rhymer + Daredevil + Stealth Device + Proximity Mines
  • Captain Jonus + Daredevil + Stealth Device + Proximity Mines
  • Maarek Steele + Daredevil + Stealth Device

For Rebels :

  • Gray + R2-F2
  • Gold + R5-D8 + Stealth Device
  • Rebel Op + Stealth Device + Luke Skywalker + Moldy Crow
  • Rebel Op + Stealth Device + Gunner

Also,

Boba Fett w/

Advanced Proton Torps

Assault Missiles

Proton Bombs

Daredevil

Stealth Device

Autoblaster

Slave 1

Targeting Coordinator

Colonel Jendon

Ion Cannon

Intelligence agent

This is Fun...

I like this concept. While not quite the same thing, we have drawn random squads and upgrades and make of them what you can. It surprisingly turned out rather equal in points and was fun.

Rebel Operative + Gunner + Stygium Particle Accelerator (23)

Rebel Operative + Gunner + Stygium Particle Accelerator (23)

Rebel Operative + Gunner + Stygium Particle Accelerator (23)

Rebel Operative + Luke Skywalker + Moldy Crow + Stygium Particle Accelerator (28)

At 97 points there's no room to fit anything eles as the cheapest turret is 4 and the title is in use. This squad would have to be the worst as reshots with Gunner on one dice are just awful and an absolutely wasteful 10 points on a modification that will never trigger

2x Gold Squadron + Blaster Turret + Stealth Device + R5 Astromech

Rebel Opperative + Blaster Turret + Gunner

Green Squadron + A-Wing Test Pilot + Swarm Tactics + Decoy

100 points. 8 dice at range 2 (7@ r3) half of these will be unfocused, and my favorite bit, swarm tactics to raise a ps2 up to a 3.

I et the idea, but I think i eould be more fun if it was randomized who played ehst list. That way people would not intentionslly do bad lists as they could draw that list them selves.

Also you do the list, you provide the ships and cards. That way you ensure sll lists are playable.

And keep in mind that no list is a sure win or loss. Oit it against itself and it is bound to both win and loose.

I don't have my Army Builder at hand, so I csn't pkay around with bad lists right now. But giving useless upgrades to ships would be an obvious choice.

Katy Scarlet

Outmaneuver

Heavy Laser Cannon

Gunner

Rexler Brath

Heavy Laser Cannon

Outmaneuver

100 pts.

I think it would be easier and maybe better for the TO to create a bunch of non-optimal lists in advance and have players draw them out of a hat. Limit it to one of each ship type (2-3 TIEs and 2 X-wings are maybe okay since you can probably assume players own the core set and the expansion), and maybe allow proxies for upgrades as it is a for-fun event. If a player can't build the squad they picked due not not owning an expansion, let them pick another one. Make it clear to players in advance what kind of event it is and that they need to own at least one of most if not all of the expansions to participate.

I would really like to play in an event like this, ideally the TO would include a lot if underused upgrades and pilots in weird but interesting combinations

EDIT: if you really want to keep the players in on the fun you could allow them to submit a squad (keeping the same restrictions as before, one of each expansion + core set) and draw them out of a hat. That means that you could end up drawing your own squadron which should encourage players to not submit really obnoxiously terrible squads. You're still at the mercy of the players though, if someone decides to submit a really good or really bad squadron there's not much you can do about it.

OMG + Stealth device, Autoblaster, Saboteur, Merc Co-Pilot

OMG + Stealth device, Autoblaster, Saboteur, Recon Specialist

Shadow Squadron Pilot + Darth Vader, Enhanced Scopes, Engine Upgrade

I love the phanton that moves first and boosts without knowing where his target is, then uses Vader twice and kills himself.
