Defender/Interceptor/Fighter Mix

By SDCC, in X-Wing

On Saturday I'll be at a shop playing a few games.

It will be the first time I use my Defender and Interceptors! Whilst I'm very excited about it, there is also some trepidation, as I'm used to just using a TIE swarm.

Do you think it might be a good idea to keep all my pilots on the same PS and go like this....

98 points
Pilots
------
Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Avenger Squadron Pilot (20)
Avenger Squadron Pilot (20)
Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)
Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)
No worries about positioning in case I get mixed up with the dials, yet still gives me options for how to approach the battles and probably keeps initiative?

Were you the guy who wasn't going to use his Squints until he got a win with just plain old TIEs?

Anywho I was working on a similar list but hadn't gotten too far. For a single base Defender and Squint plus 3 TIEs you have 16 points left over for upgrading them or adding a 4th TIE, though I don't think I'd go that route. Perhaps Onyx, RGP w/PTL, Dark Curse and two Obsidians leaving 1 point for initiative. Or you could drop them down to Academies and upgrade DC to Howl. Run her the TIEs with the Defender as a swarm and RGP flanking? Sadly 100 points doesn't go as far as it used to, kinda like a dollar.

I got a win! Two in fact! Feeling a lot better now :) Well remembered!

I bought the squints, and the Defender was a gift.

Not two interceptors then? I was wondering about flying the TIEs with the Def, whilst the squints took off the other side. Oppo would have to choose and then hopefully I could make the most of the Defender having shields and the white k. Shields!

I'm not sure keeping all @ PS 3 allows you to build a really strong list. Although its a decent idea if you just want to familiarize yourself with the different dials and learn how to fly them in formation before focussing on a stronger build. Here's something that packs a bit more punch using the same ships:

Howlrunner w/ swarm tactics

Academy Pilot

2 Alpha interceptors

Delta Pilot

= 98 pts.

This type of list really wants to fly together in formation to maximize the focussed fire. Splitting up would be a bad idea.

If you want a flanker, you need something like Backstabber, Royal Guard w/ PtL or a named interceptor like Turr or Fel (more expensive though)

In past games I've been fantastic at flying into myself so figured with them all on the same PS I could choose their order and not much it up too much.

I thought about Howlrunner, but wondered how using her ability would work out when I wasn't flying in a swarm?

Delta + HLC

3 x AP

Tetran Cowall + PTL

Well, with this one, your Interceptors are in real trouble.

Avenger squadron offers you very little. You can shave ten points off your list by dropping them all to PS1. Add some Hull upgrades, something to the defender, use those points. PS3, while nice, isn't worth it on this list.

Agreed.

Id drop all to PS 1 and use saved points to put HLC + Hull on the Defender, giving the list lots of heavy hitters. Or you can put the 3 pts for Hull on something else.

I like the Defender swarm:

Howl w/ HU or SD and Determination - 22

Delta - 30

Acad. Tie X 4 - 48

Total: 100 points.

Fly them all in formation. The Defender will give you a nice offensive boost. If you want an interceptor, just drop two academys. I would go with Saber w/ PTL as a flanker.

Dudes, I don't own HLC, or several Defenders :)

If your local group has no problem with you running a list with proxy's then you can run something like this:

Fel (27) w/PTL (3)

Onyx squadron (32)

Black Squadron Tie (14) w/ Predator (3)

Black Squadron Tie (14) w/ Predator (3)

at 96 points you have 4 points to play with, either giving fel a Modification, or giving the Onyx Defender an Ion cannon.

If you don't have Fel and only have what's available in the Aces set, then substitute Carnor Jax for Fel

Best go buy a Shuttle then! Trust me, youll want the Shuttle either way.

Howl with swarm is a solid choice, especially with interceptors. As a reroll on 1 of 3 or 4 dice is pretty good.

The howl, swarm, academy, 2 alpha and a delta looks pretty fun to try out.

Though in my opinion, the most fun interceptors to use are ones with ptl and high ps. Fel with ptl and stealth/targeting computer is awesome to use, though is a solid 32-33 points

how about upgrade one to howlrunner, add a hull and swarm tactics on her. give one of the ints or def ps 8.

as much as i like HLC, the defender is pretty good already.

OP, the lambda is a really fun ship if you learn how to slow play it correctly, if you decide you want to give it a try. comes with great upgrades too.

and you probably don't have 5 ints, but i've been itching to try that.

Own them with your Mind! No one can take away what you have in your mind.
