X-wing 2.0

By Popn618, in X-Wing

So I had an idea to update the game and am interested in your thoughts.

What if ships were separated from pilots and pilot abilities. I was thinking pilots would have a primary ps and secondary ps. So for example han would be a ps 9/7. 9 in a yt, 7 in everything else. So if darth Vader wanted to fly an interceptor you would still get his ability but he would have a lower ps while still having he same point cost. Obviously the point costs for ships would change so that the ship was a base amount of points and to add a pilot costs more. The ept would be attached to the pilot and the ship would have the same missile slots for any pilot.

This would open up the ability for a pilot ability that could add a green dice for an "elusive" pilot right on his card.

I would imagine that would be a pain to keep everything balanced.

Yeah, not a fan of it in Attack Wing, even less of a fan of it in this game.

Yeah so I didn't realize it was an already used concept. So much for being a hidden genius.

I do like the concept and wonderbifnotncoukd be balanced with lower ps or something

While I don't think this is a bad idea it does add an additional level of complexity. It also opens up the potential for superpowered lists. All I could think after reading the post was Wedge in a B-Wing with HLC.

I would hate if they did that. You'd lose a lot of flavor and make the game more "game-y".

Not to mention you would just see certain pilots over and over again. I know I'd put Vader in pretty much every list I ran. And could you imagine Maarek in a Phantom?

Dark curse in a bounty hunter or phantom... QQ

Horton in a Bwing with HLC, Arvel in a YT.

It would probably be way to hard to balance.

I toyed around with the idea for moving asteroids each turn and large ships leaving behind debris fields or becoming obstacles when they die.

I'm sure the game's designers experimented with separate pilot and ship cards during the game's development. I think if they had gone with that for the final version, there would have been ship icons on the pilot cards to let you know which ships they would be allowed to fly.

It's still possible that we'll see some familiar pilots flying different ships. There could be a different unique Luke Skywalker card in an E-Wing or something like that, or Maarek in a Phantom or whatever. I think their Pilot Skill ratings and pilot abilities would be different -- that is, tailored to the strengths and roles of the ships they're flying. They may lose or gain elite talent slots, too.

"Luke in an E-Wing" types of cards seem like a great addition to the hypothetical cards-only expansions that get discussed here once in a while.

I feel like they messed up not doing this from thebstart, but I don't think starting to do so now would be a good idea.

What about Biggs in a YT-1300

Biggs in a YT with Lando/Chewbacca and C3P0. "No that's cool, I didn't want to shoot anything..."

Yeah, the game would break down if you could move pilots around.

Pass. It'd get way too broken. Biggs in a YT, as previously mentioned. Vader in a squint? Ridiculous.

I'm not at all comfortable talking about a second edition, which "2.0" implies.

While I was not personally burned by what's happened with the frequent new editions of their games that Games Workshop introduced, I did see it happen. It's really the scummiest thing a games company can do (or can you think of scummier things?)

Especially since this game is still really new and collections are already quite large, it would be really ugly of FFG to introduce a new edition which would invalidate current collections - which your suggestion certainly implies.

So, hie thee hence heretic!

Mech Warrior had something like that. Was interesting but hard to keep track of on the table. Had a paddle that you punched out of a card and inserted into the base that gave a series of + or - to stats. You were always checking to see what your stats really were.

And if you think about it from a logical point of view, a pilot would need years of flying a specific craft to make it sing. Putting Han Solo in a fresh off the line YT and he would not be very comfortable. Just the way it is. How would you feel if Liea shouted that they lost shields and instead of being confident in his ship and continuing to gun down inept Ties Solo ran off, Hydro-spanner in hand, to try to make sure that his ship would not explode? Just not very cinematic.

At some point a set of 2.0 rules wouldn't bug me. But if I had to buy new minis. Well screw that. I'll buy new cardboard for a few bucks. I'll buy a rulebook for 20 or so if it comes with a ship. But if I have to buy all new minis I'm done.

This was the thing that drove me away from Attack Wing. Everybody would use Darth Picard no matter what faction they'd run.

Basically. Also having Picard command a Negh'Var warship is a little...

...Strange.
