Are there Tyranids? Necrons? I love "Monster Manuals", so I was hoping to get a little more information.
What sort of beasties are in the Creature Compendium?
For the major races there is the Eldar and Orks. No Necrons, though there are tonnes of similar fan interpretations on Dark Reign. Tyranidwise, you have the Lictor and Genestealers statted up.
Steve
TBH the book isnt a Monstrous Manual, it shouldn't be compared to such a series of book either.
Yes they both have creatures in them, and yes they have stats, but they are very different books all in all.
The DH creature book throws in plot hooks by the ton, variants on critters already found in the main DH (and other) books and does add the much needed 'nids.
It is a good book, but not a Great book. I own it only so i can say i own the whole series of books, but its one i've found the least use for so far. Actually, i cant think of any of the creatures in there that i've used since purchasing it. Nor have i used the plot hooks etc. This could partly be because the whole of my group also owns each of the books and i'd rather keep meta-gaming down to a minimalist amount where possible.
Out of the whole batch of releases so far, this has been the most dissapointing for me.
'nids when i get round to needing them i'll use, but not any of the other things in there i think.
The Development pages i think hold a brief on what critters are in the book as well which might tantalise you enough to purchase it.
Its a book? Check!
It has "monstrous" critters in it? Check!
Its a Monstrous Manual!
But i understand where you come from. It isnt like the old school D&D MM where it was just a statline and a paraagraph splainin what each was.
But I do like the book, overall it is fairly well done, is informative and enjoyable. A nice touch would have been to add the critters from other books either in an appendix, or fleshed out like the rest of the tome.
Does inspire one to think a bit more outside the box with some of the critters and others are just a bit tad little boring (the nids, orks and eldar are pretty much exactly what you expect, which is OK, but a DotDG styl entry for the would have been grand).
Hopefully it will have future "spin-offs" such as Xenos Anathema, Malleus Anathema and Hereticus Anathema!
I actually dislike D&D, but "Monster Manual" was the best description I could give.
I like that they included plot hooks and the like!
As always, I appreciate the answers. I'm BRAND new to 40K as a whole, so I have a LOT of catching up to do! My buddy (who's a rabid fan) loves seeing the game through new eyes. I just need to brush-up enough to run game for him.
If possible, I'd suggest visiting your local game or comics store to check through a copy there. Also you can find some nice reviews for the book here:http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/14/14145.phtml &http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/14/14153.phtml.If you're just getting started I'd also suggest the Inquisitor's Handbook first if you don't have it already.
Hope this helps,
