Want to fire a blaster carbine with one hand? You need the Pistol Grip.

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

The AoR write-up for the blaster carbine omits the fluff line about using it with one hand. IMO, this is fine so long as you have access to Dangerous Covenants for the Pistol Grip attachment.

I like that they considered the change.

Old pet peave: Can anyone name a blaster carbine that doesn't have a pistol grip? Do they all have that attachment? A pistol grip is not typically an add-on. It comes from the factory that way. It's like having a Full Stock attachment for a blaster rifle. They typically already have that. In fact, Smooth Grip might make more sense as an attachment.

I think the fluff write up in the CRB was more to allow some common sense to creep in that a player could fire at close range and press a door's open button, or tap on a comm switch. I think the pistol grip attachment is prima facie evidence the devs never wanted for that fluff piece to mean players would be allowed to engage in some of the mechanical aspects of firing one handed, ie two weapon combat. That's what the pistol grip is required for.

But the pistol grip attachment is putting a pistol grip on a weapon that already has a pistol grip. Heck, most of the blaster rifles have a pistol grip already. The only weapons I can think of that don't are the ion blaster (cause it was made from a cut down bolt action rifle) and those long rifles Luke had on Tatooine.

Don't forget Boba Fett's blaster carbine. Just because the E-11 has a pistol grip, doesn't mean all of them do.

You'll find that most real-world carbines are virtually impossible to fire one-handed, pistol grip or not. Carbines are generally smaller in the Star Wars universe than their real-world counterparts, but I think the point still remains true.

Keep in mind, the description for the Pistol Grip Attachment from Dangerous Covenants is as follows:

A pistol grip replaces the stock or other grip on a long arm with one like that of a pistol, allowing it to be fired one-handed. Most blaster rifles feature a pistol-like grip by default, in which case this attachment makes additional modifications to make the weapon better-suited to one-handed use. (Emphasis added.)

Adding the Pistol Grip Attachment is less like throwing a pistol grip on an AR-15 that already has one, and more like taking an M-4 Carbine, shortening the barrel, removing the stock, and turning it into an AR Pistol. Another example is the Ruger 10/22 Carbine that could (theoretically) be modified into a Ruger Charger.

In previous discussions I was completely fine with this interpretation. I just wish they had not called it a Pistol Grip. A little more thought and naming it something more generic like Compact (stolen from HappyDaze) instead of Pistol Grip and there wouldn't be so much confusion. As is it's basically saying, "this attachment is adding a pistol grip, or something else quite different that has the same effect". Why not just change the name since the title is most likely nothing like what the description says it is.

GM: You find a blaster carbine with a Pistol Grip attachment.

Player: What is that?

GM: Well, it's a blaster carbine that has had it's barrel shortened and stock cut down a bit.

Player: ...and it had a pistol grip added too?

GM: Not this carbine, like most, it already had a pistol grip before the pistol grip attachment was applied.

Player: Huh? <play paused for a few minutes as this goes off into a long explanation>"

versus

GM: You find a Compact blaster carbine.

Player: What is that?

GM: Well, it's a blaster carbine that has had it's barrel shortened and stock cut down a bit and possibly a pistol grip attached if it didn't already have one.

Player: Ok cool.
