GenCon 2014 - Anything Else Going On?

By cptmusket, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Organized Play

I was wondering if in anyone's experience if Fantasy Flight does anything except for the tournaments for GenCon. Have they had any specified open play or league type events in previous years? I walk past their area of the hall each year, but haven't taken a look-see to check out what was going on in the area.

I enjoy playing, but am fairly new to the game. I enjoy playing for fun, and heavy tournaments do not have much appeal to me personally. At least, not at this point.

The company that produced the Warcraft game used to host leagues at GenCon where the winner got 2 cards and the loser received one. Each set of cards had a random change to win a nicer prize. You paid a set amount of money and could challenge people all weekend. It was one of my favorite things to do during down time or later at night once the dealer hall closed. I wish more companies would do something like this.

That does sound like fun. I've not played in many tournaments for this game, mainly out of a dislike for the tiebreaker rules. As such, most of my experience playing the game has been in casual matches in which players are willing to try all kinds of decks, not just whatever Sith or Smuggler deck is dominating at the moment. I've found this to be a quite varied and satisfying way to enjoy the game. I will not be attending GenCon this year, but I can definitely see the appeal in spontaneous challenges throughout the event. I could even see a light-dark contest happening: in tournaments you are forced (excuse the pun) to play both the light and dark sides, but there is no reason this should be necessary for casual play. Perhaps at the start of the event, you declare an allegience to the Empire or the Rebellion, and they give you a corresponding sticker. Then you can challenge anyone who has the opposite sticker to duel for the fate of the galaxy.
