Let's Design Wave 1 for Prequel Ships!

By SpikeSpiegel, in X-Wing

I wouldn't but it!

I think Fantasy Flight should concentrate on more variety with the Ships that they have already released.

Just my Humble Opinion. Peace!

I'm not a massive fan of moving prequel ships into the game, but there is nothing more I love than theorycrafting. I'll get to work on some things for you!

Starting with:

Clone_Pilot_Front_Face.jpg

I'll do a V-Wing later :)

I Would add a crew, there's two pilots and and astromech

ARC-170 Rear Turret:

Once per round, when an enemy at range 1 outside your primary firing arc attacks that enemy rolls 1 fewer attack die.

This means the turret doesn't do damage but instead just makes it harder to shoot your team.

Alternatively.

Once per round, when declared by an enemy as the target of an attack at range 1-2 and within your auxiliary firing arc, immediately roll 1 attack die and deal damage to the target as shown. If damage is dealt the target is considered hit.

Both of those are way too powerful. We already have a mechanic for this sort of thing, much better to use something that is already well play tested then trying to come up with something new.

Edit: Well the first one is okayish but it would probably need to be more than 2 points, and as I said, use what you've already got. The second suggestion is stronger than APL's by a long way.

Prediction.... there will be Episode VII haters too... because they can.

That is not so much a prediction as a hard cold fact already.

Nobody hates Star Wars as much as a Star Wars fan.

I just feel the irrational hatred of ANYTHING Prequel is sorta like Anne Coulter's soccer psychosis. I don't CARE about Jar-Jar or "You are my very soul." The action was friggin' awesome. The jedi fights, the mass combat, the warships... c'mon, that stuff was GREAT.

With that in mind, if you're looking for Dark Times:

Imperial V-Wing and Howlrunner. Don't know what else to suggest; there IS no real Rebellion, and we already have Z-95s. Mebbe Howlrunner could be Rebel.

If you're thinking New Set, then it's easier. To start:

REPUBLIC: Aethersprite and Naboo N-1.

Uuuh... Bad Guys: Vulture fighter and Tri-Fighter.

The ARC was actually two pilots, an astromech, and a tailgunner...

For the Jedi Interceptors, throw in a generic Jedi Ace pilot. Maybe PS 3. 4? I believe Plo Koon flew one, make him an 8...Saesee Tin was a known pilot, he can be in there...Anakin could pass for his usual 9, I guess. Obi-Wan as a 5, because he hates flying.

Also, I want a LAAT gunship. I don't recall seeing them in space, but I feel like they should be fine. Would be stupid otherwise. Love that ship.

I'd feel much better about a much-thought-about ground based game instead of an X-wing clone. I'd be annoyed, having to buy a whole different set of ships to play the same game, and I don't feel like there are as many good ships to use in it. Where the Clone Wars really stood out was it's land battles. You've got two big armies fighting each other. Perfect. GCW era, that wouldn't work because Rebels were far outnumbered and wouldn't want a direct confrontation. Got their butts kicked at Hoth that way. The Republic era, however, is perfect. One clone army, one droid army. It's set up perfectly. And that gunship of mine should still be part of it because dammit, I said so.

While im not a fan of the prequels and not a fan of most of the prequel designs really. I could still theoretically see some of the fighters from the period getting heavily modified and falling into the hands of pirates and small system defence forces or even used by the rebellion in the early years much like the Y Wing. That way everybody is happy. It isnt the prequels but the fighters can still be used. There were quite a few years between the Clone wars and the rebellion but surely the ARC etc didnt just vanish from the galaxy like Obi Wans memories of R2.

I'm a little confused why people seem to think the jedi fighter would not have generic pilots. Unless maybe it's just an idea they are throwing out, i suggested the same thing as a possibility for the TIE Defender way back in like wave 2. Otherwise it would be a simple matter to make a generic Jedi Knight pilot with like PS5 or 6 or whatever they think works.

I wish I had more to contribute but I am not really familiar with the clone wars era ships. I do agree with the idea that the starter would be best as a proper Clone Wars period kit rather than starting with the Naboo starfighter and such, even though it was chronologically first in the prequel timeline

I'm not sure how much lower the tech actually was. It has always seemed to me that the Star Wars universe had plateau'd to a certain extant. Add to that the fact that innovation tends to be lower during times of oppression and discrimination, both of which exist in spades from the end of the clone wars on. Most of the real innovations came late in to the GCW as both sides started re-evaluating the theatre of war. Most of the earlier designs seem more like repurposing of tech for new roles then innovation.

In most cases what you said would be correct but from what they show in the movies and tech books the ships used by the empire from the dark times on got better and better as time went on. Heck only one Rep fighter had target linking, and without a R unit the jedi craft are 99% blind and with the R unit there detection range is laughable compaired to craft not using R units sololy for detection.

My intention in creating this thread was to see the community collaborate and bring new ideas to the game, such as new mechanics or abilities, with what the prequels offer. I would think that it would encourage open design space for people who love X-Wing and bring that into a prequel game for newer gamers who grew up with the prequels to enjoy. X-Wing has provided us with a gaming template we can use as a community to help design a different, or even compatible, game for other players to enjoy. I was hoping that expanding the player base and bridging the SW generation gap would be something fun for us all to do.

And even if this thread is met with immediate disapproval and lament at the suggestion of the prequels, I won't give up hope that it will bring out some ideas for us to share and craft together for a new game or expansion that would be fun for us to (in theory) play. I understand the elitism and relentless dedication to the original trilogy, but I only ask that we keep open minds when it comes to designing a game meant for fun and flavor and cool little plastic ships blowing each other up or dodging lasers with every dice roll.

I would support this as a fan-based project in Shapeways or something similar, but wouldn't want it in FFG's X-Wing product line. I find the prequel movies and ships so ridiculous that I wouldn't even want to play against them at a tournament, or be faced with the prospect of purchasing one in order to get an upgrade card sold with it.

Good point on both accounts, the Naboo star fighter was sort of a “one off” element in the franchise…and never really appeared again in any important capacity.

As for the Jedi Starfighter, that’s an interesting idea, a generic Pilot Skill 4 or 5 (at most, i think) pilot, perhaps with a focus ability (similar to Kyle Katarn’s) to represent force abilities?

I think there’s a lot of undue hate for the prequel series, mostly, it seems, just because people love their bandwagon-hopping. Sure their not the same movies as the Original Trilogy, sure the acting isn’t as good and the CGI lends a lot less realism to the universe, but it continues the fascinating Star Wars story, expands upon some of our favorite characters, and adds some truly unique ship designs (the most important aspect for X-Wing).

Everytime we have this topic of prequel ships, people start arguing about the blasphemy it might be. As a fan of the game and as a Star Wars fan, I would certainly collect them. Specially considering the quality of FF products. If by any chance they release things like that and you think it is outrageous, don't buy them... lol... no need to spoil the fun for those who like it :D

On the other hand, I wouldn't like to face those ships in a tournament. If they release prequel ships (same 1:270 scale) in another game, or as a collectors edition, I would surely be one of their clients. Same with a re-birth of the old "Wings of Glory" (X-wing scale) with modern airplanes... :P But that is just a dream that I'll have to fulfill by looking at shapeways...

ARC 170, ETA-2, V-Wing, Belbullab-22(?).

DOO EEEEEEET

I would buy prequel/clone wars ships, but probably not every single one they release like I am doing now. Some of the prequel ships are just hideous (like the ARC-170) ;P

As I understand it the ARC was in service with the empire in the period before episode 4. It was phased out, along with the Y-Wing and Z-95 infavor of the TIE series. The three ships also served in the rebellion. I could see the ARC getting released as a rebel ship with possibly a "Shadows of the Republic" aces style expansion with one painted imperial gray and the other an old republic scheme with empire and rebel pilots.

NO, MAN JUST NO. i would be fine if ff made it a separate game but not x-wing expansion.

As a new idea for the game, maybe have a small double length base or a base-and-a-half length for the ARC-170 that will allow it to have a rear gunners arc that is much more limited than just a small fighter rear arc and giving the piece much mire of a blind spot (much like the Firespray). I also think the gunner should be a crew upgrade card that can be removed when the ARC-170 is damaged. So, something like this:

BASE: Primary firing arc + dotted rear firing arc (possibly marked as grey to indicate it is only optional)

CARD:

Razor Squadron Pilot // ARC-170 // PS4

Attack: 3 // Agility: 2 // Shield: 3 // Hull: 3

Action: Focus, Target Lock

Points: 25

[Crew, Astromech, Torpedos]

CREW:

Rear Gunner

I wouldn't know how to word it correctly, but: "Once per round, when defending and before rolling defense dice, if the attacker is within range 1-2 of your rear firing arc, you may roll 1 attack die. On a hit or crit, the attacker rolls defense dice equal to their range. When you are dealt a damage card, flip this card face down."

Just a crazy idea to throw out the for the ARC. I also like the idea of including a Delta Starfighter in the first wave instead of the Naboo N-1. The Delta is much more iconic and a lot better to work for crew and abilities than with the N-1. I'm also really liking the idea of droids not being able to take certain actions unless they are upgraded and Jedi precognitive abilities.

I'll post some more ideas that are in the works for you guys to critique.

And also keep an eye out for Old Republic era ideas...

I just don't get why anyone would want anakin in this game, there was alot of bad acting and direction, the story was weak and disrespectful of the eu, but by far the most offensive thing from those films was anakin skywalker.

Hate the actor, not the character. Anakin Skywalker in the Clone Wars cartoon is much better than Hayden Christensen in the prequel movies :P

Are you setting up a debate about who is the most annoying "Annie" or Jar-Jar?

I have to admit, that's quite the contest.

For any jedi fighters, just have the lower ps ships be called "Jedi Apprentice" and "Jedi Knight", then named jedi would be the higher PS pilots.

Maybe all jedi pilots regardless if they are generic or not would get the EPT slot because of their force abilities.

Jar jar is more annoying but he at least would not be a pilot, little anakin in a naboo starfighter *shudders*

Guys guys guys.

Nobody wants characters that aren't different by the era XWMG takes place in. Just the ships.

And if they DO, then they're silly! But seriously. I want an ETA-2 something fierce.

LOOK AT IT.

ITS SO SLICK.

I pitched the idea for "long" bases and "wide" bases awhile back (and multiple times before) and people weren't too keen on the idea for some reason. I think it would be a great point of differentiation for the game that is now running out of combos that dot require more rules to be made. Hwk would fly even more differently with a long base instead of the small base. A wide base would make both maneuvering and firing arc different. Wouldn't want to see a lot of ships with them but certainly would add variety and uniqueness to a few ships.

As to Ani vs. jar jar? Throw em in a pit and tell them only one may leave; hope that they kill each other in the process (but if I haw to choose I'm backing Ani- bad acting happens, bad choices can be avoided... And in this case even deleted digitally!).
