Rooks: The cheaper version of the E-wing

By oddeye, in X-Wing

I was thinking of running a pair of knave E-wings in my latest list.. then i realized that a rook w/ a stealth device is really a 3 point cheaper knave E-wing. Sure there are a few differences, like a couple upgrade options / actions / and PS.. and the fact that the SD can be destroyed. Not to mention a few dial differences.. I know sounds like a totally different ship. But really, I'm thinking I'd prefer the rook over the knave any day as I like to be as thrifty as possible with my 100 point lists.

With that being said, this leads me to believe that the knave squadron (27 pts) is actually really well priced for what you get. Good stats, some decent upgrades, a better dial and more actions as we all know the rook is a great bargain and SD is a popular upgrade for most ships (though usually with agility 3 ones..).

Small disclaimer: I understand that most ships are actually just cheaper / more expensive versions of other ships.. ha

Barrel Roll and Evade alone make it quite a bit different from a rookie X-Wing. Plus the E can do a 5 straight, 3 and 4 K-Turn, and 1 more green.

So yes the E is more expensive, and you could debate if it's worth 6 more points or not. But there's a lot more to it then just a X-Wing with a stealth device.

That said, that doesn't mean 2 Rookies aren't a better option.

Stealth is a huge waste of points on a naturally 2 agility ship. Better off with Hull upgrade. You do get a lot more with the E-wing than it appears. 1 extra agility dice, a better dial (its got every straight manuerver), Barrel roll & evade action, and a slightly better 5 hitpoint setup. 2 hull and 3 shields vs. 3 hull and 2 shields. The E-wing is more manueverable and can survive better. It doesn't have a hard 1 turn, but with a 2 hard and the barrel roll, you can end up in pretty much the same place. Also don't forget the system upgrade, that can be huge. But you get what you pay for.

Part of the value of the E-Wing - and I would argue it's a big part - is the sheer variety of upgrade options, which you obviously aren't taking advantage of on a naked ship.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the stealth goes away on the first hit the extra agility from the E-wing is there for good, so if you take one hit from a HWK at range 3 you lose your extra die but the E-wing would still have it for the full remaining 4 hp

I think you guys missed the joke....

Edit: Seriously though, the only E I will probably run is Etahn for his buffing ability. Rooks are just too good of a steal.

Rookies are one of the most inefficient ships in the game.

E-wings are overcosted by 2 points, but okay.

cough.. hack.. huh?? no way!

rooks are great. Sure they are not as good as say a tie fighter or maybe even a blue B-wing but I'd at least place them close behind for their stats and point value. When did rooks stop being the go to rebel scum list filler?? why is this happening to us?? noooooooo!

where's cubanboy when you need him? I know he'd appreciate my sense of humor!

This thread was a statement within a joke.. I was just stating that the rook was a cheaper version of the E-wing (should be obvious considering the thread title) and that I'd be taking rooks over most other E-wings, the joke was that everyone proceeded to repeat everything i just stated in the original post..

It's a trap!

Ninety percent of the conversations around here are just regurgitations anyways. What's one more?

Wrong. FFG's gone to great pains to ensure this isn't the case. Red turns on the Defender? Why? To stop it being Interceptor+.

hmm I think FFG is doing an outstanding job with this game (it is my favorite after all). Though I have to disagree with you on this.

few examples:

z95 > x wing > e wing

tie fighter > advanced > interceptor > defender

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be this way considering how these ships were designed off one another according to backstory. Anyways to each their own I suppose.

Back on topic:

Anyone else think X wings are just better deals over E wings in general? Darth Ruin stated earlier that rooks are extremely inefficient!!! the lies!

To the extent there was a joke, I think it ran afoul of Poe's Law.

That's like saying that all-beef hot dogs are cheaper than steaks, and they're both beef, so the hot dogs are a better deal.

The E-wing and X-wing are both Rebel ships mounted on a small base with 3 Attack, and that's basically the only thing they have in common. Even the Astromech slot functions differently on the E-wing than it does on the X-wing...

Hmm yes definitely seems to be the case, in fact you have also fell into the trap and not realized it. I've already stated that both ships are very different.

I just want to say one thing... i like x wings over e wings?

anyone?..

or am I alone on this... haha

What they are trying to say is that its apples and oranges. When I make a list an X-Wing and an E-wing don't exist in the same space. I would take an X-Wing when I need some reasonably priced and good at a lot, but not great at anything. E-Wings would be for more specialized roles. Ethan for larger squads, Corran for assassinations. Even the generics would probably be more of a focus to a list, whereas the generic X-Wings mostly end up as filler.

we need to let this thread die... please... only two people are tracking what is really happening here.. everyone else is just feeding the rancor.

Funny you mention that. Z95 with a concussion missile and with a hull upgrade is still 2pts cheaper than a rookie with similar dial and damage output those first 2 rounds (Xwing 6-7 dice, z 6-7 dice). For just as punchy extra body, save yourself 2 pts.
