Title says it all. I have been experimenting with the A-Wing and have yet to put together a squad that works well. Do you guys have lists that have worked well? Or should I just wait for the Aces to come out?
Effective A-Wing lists?
Wait for Aces, for now.
Wait for Aces, for now.
Pretty much this.
The reason to wait for Aces is that either you're saving 6-12 points using Chaardan Refit, or you're mounting some of those tasty, tasty Proton Rockets. And adding a free EPT to everyone except the Prototype is pretty nice, too. Oh, and also there are a couple of really desirable new pilots.
Rebel Aces is a massive level-up for A-wings, basically, and ought to push them out of their current narrow niches into more mainstream play.
I'm a fan of Green with Opportunist. It's not hard to come up with efficient 3 ship combos that play around that.
2x Dagger with AS, Tarn, Green with Opportunist.
2x Dagger with FCS, Biggs, Green with Opportunist.
Biggs, Hobie with stress droid, Tarn with R7, Green with Opportunist.
If you prefer ptl, then add that point to the rest of the squad.
Rebel Aces may make As a ship I use a lot of, but there are some fun uses for them now. Besides, if you get good at flying them now, you'll be that much better off one Aces comes out.
My favorite current build is Tycho PTL with stealth device. Sub in Shield upgrade or add a missile to taste. Simple but effective. I tried a proxy battle using the refit and test pilot on him. Adding expert handling. It was as squirrely and rediculous as it sounds. In two games he didn't take a single hit and managed to get into range 1 and out of arc on most turns.
Also a green squad with ptl as an effective and cheep flanker. Higher PS then most ships you see on the board and a whole lot of maneuverability. One of these guys with an assault missile won me Imdaar.
Really on the whole I think the Green Squad is one of the most under-rated ships in the game. Don't even bother with the prototype pilot, not worth it.
Green + Opportunist is GOLD!
Post Aces:
Cracken+ SL + Cluster
Jake +PTL +outmanuver
Bandit + missiles of choice x2
Jake's the real deal. Cracken feeds the pain.
Pre Aces:
Roark + blaster + recon
Dagger + Adv Sen
Green + PTL x2
3pts left over for fun.

I find Tycho's too expensive unless you're deliberately stressing him multiple times a turn, so yeah, I don't bother unless it's an Aces test pilot build with PTL + Daredevil/Expert Handling. For the moment a Green is more cost-effective.
I'm looking forward to them too. And, hey, Q3 is less than an hour away for the Midwest.
Friends dont let friends fly A-wings. They are so bad.
Prototipe pilot makes one hell of blocker, formation spliter and action killer, you just use its pilot skill as advantage, with proper initiative and timing you can cut howl from its swarm
Green Squadron Pilot + Predator is a pretty nice combo. Outmaneuver is decent on it, but I like Predator more overall; with just two dice, that's almost a TL+Focus each round, and you can also choose to Evade without completely sacrificing offense. Not as versatile as PTL, but then again, no stress.
EDIT: post-aces, Jake Farrell + Proton Rockets is fantastic. Those rockets are really nasty, especially considering how little they cost.
Edited by AilowynnI have been having a ton of fun with this list.

If you drop the Daggers to Blues you have around 6 more points to distribute as you see fit (I tend to throw Hull Upgrades on my A-Wings). I have been playing with exchanging PTL for Opportunist or Predator, something to make the limited amount of dice you are rolling more effective. The thing about A-Wings is they are not mainline ships, they don't put out enough damage on their own. However as a clean up ship the rebels have nothing that can match the A-Wing. Their speed and plethora of maneuvers allows them to be incredibly dangerous close up.
I've been pondering Predator with Cluster Missiles, to get that reroll on each both throws, but I always end up refitting those 6 points for something else.
My current top can't-wait-to-try-this list, for a 100 straight, is this:
Jake + Predator + Outmaneuver
Green + Predator + Opportunist
Green + Predator + Opportunist
Green + Predator + Opportunist
Once Jake have chipped off the target's defensive tokens, the rest of the the band throws 3 dice with a reroll.
All they ever have to do is focus every round.
I'm not that big of a fan of PTL on A-WIngs, but that's mostly because I use it mostly on Squints for positioning; boost+barrel in any order. Try as I might, I can only ever make a lackluster Int of an A-Wing, and I'm beginning to accept that they have to be flown a lot differently.
Edited by Malmer4x Greens with PTL& chardaan refit @ 20 pts each.
20 pts for upgrades like:
Vet instincts (PS5 seems a 'sweet spot')
Predator
Outmaneuver
Wingman
Proton Rockets
Named pilots.
4 greens give you 8 dice of attack.....Just saying

Yup. But note the 20 points left. Proton rockets? Outmaneuver? Predator? All of them?
2x rockets would still leave plenty points for additional shenanigans.
Example: 3x Greens with PTL & vet. instincts plus proton rockets leaves enough for a 4th green with PTL & wingman.
Try keeping away from distance 1 from PS5 A-wings with PTL. Good luck with that.
The 4th A-wing I am not sold on yet but we'll see. I'd love to see. Cannot wait to see.

Or 12, depending on whether you can effectively employ Opportunist.
I'm not sure if Aces will make A-Wings strong enough to hold their own as the only ship in a list, but I expect we will see a lot more of them cropping up in lists. A Green with Refit, Test Pilot, and 2 of PTL, Outmaneuver or Predator could be quite effective at 23 points.
Jake Farrell — A-Wing 24
Push the Limit 3
Chardaan Refit -2
Outmaneuver 3
A-Wing Test Pilot 0
Gemmer Sojan — A-Wing 22

Tournament winner? Not likely.
The most fun you can have with your pants on? Quite sure of it!
