Don't forget his pilot skill helps in getting better target locks over the other bombers. He is not all great but remember you are paying for that so be sure to use it to your advantage when picking who eats your APTs.
Is Major Rhymer worth the points?
It will be interesting to see if we start shifting to fewer, high PS ships in squads, then I can see him being useful. Fewer ships means his impact is greatly increased.
Set him up as shown below and I think you have the makings of a viable build. (Stealth Device optional for the extra die with the rockets, four is still a good number)
Proton Rockets, Proton Rockets, Veteran Instincts, Stealth Device
In fact, I rather like this squad
Maybe as a solo bomber in a squad or in epic play. When I run a squad of bombers, if a named pilot makes it in, it's Jonus.
If only his ability worked for bombs as well, that would make him a threat to watch out for.
I like his ability but is it worth the 5 cost you are paying for it? No way.
You know, for one more point, you can take Maarek and I would argue that he is a better choice than Rhymer even though he's one of the worst pilot in the game. That shows how good Rhymer is.
He's 4 points over Jonus for 1 PS more and an ability that you need to pay more to use AND is not that useful on most ordnance. Basically, it is useful with: APT, Proton Rocket and Cluster Missiles. APT cost a lot, so without any other upgrade, you're paying 32 pts for a 5 dice attack at range 1-2 that you'll be able to use once per game, after that he's a regular PS7 Bomber. Proton Rocket, I could see work but, quite frankly, I would prefer Jonus with 2 proton torpedoes and VI over Rhymer with 2 Proton Rockets and still save 1 points and maybe gaining an ability that can help others. Cluster Missiles need Jonus to be efficient, so unless you're taking Rhymer AND Jonus, you would be better to take something else. Othe ordnance, you gain the range 1 that you usually don't but, you are still shooting at 3 dice at range 1 and I would believe that a modified 3 dice is better than a unmodified 4 dice.
Nah, Rhymer is not a good choice for munchkin team building. In casual games for a thematic feel or a challenge, sure. Scimitar Squadron: Jonus+ Rhymer+ 2x Scimitar Pilot. In tournament, no.
I'd never use rhymer without APT & PTL, and a mini-swarm or something simmilar, even in casual games. If I'm using Jonus I'll have him with unnamed bombers or a couple HLC/Ion firesprays. Rhymer has won me several games, but he's also been a huge point sink that didn't fully pay off in others.
I have learned a great deal, Thanks every one! This has been a awesome thread!
Edited by devotedknightRhymer, cluster missiles & predator sounds pretty good to me...
... and proton rockets are freakin' awesome.
