Is Major Rhymer worth the points?

By devotedknight, in X-Wing

I am wondering if Major Rhymer is worth the points. (He is very expensive!)

Not really. It's a shame he's so expensive. But he can be made to work. He's the best Bomber in the game for Phantom Hunting. Give him Vet instincts, some ordnance, and he'll catch them.

But there are better ships for that.

No.

I didn't think so. Too bad, his ability is real cool. Thanks

His ability is future proofed. As more ordnance comes out, the better his ability will be. Proton Rockets are a bit better than Advanced Proton Torpedoes.

Short answer is, as others have already said, no.

The long answer is no, because you have to then pay more for some weaponry to get any possible use out of the ability, which you'll only get to use once per weapon, there's always the chance that you'll end up using that weaponry at it's standard range anyway, and of course there's the classic problem of dying before you can fire. There are just too many ways for it all to go horribly wrong for Rhymer to be useful.

He has yet to be used in a 2014 Regionals squad that has made the Final Cut, or reported in the Top Third. Total attendance through week 9 of Regionls is 1,332. That's a lot of squads without him being used successfully.

Yes! Because X-Wing is about more than Tournaments And letting off flechette's in someone's face is fun!

Letting off an APT with a focus sounds even more fun.

Anyone up for a silly build? Shuttle with Fleet Officer + Rhymer and another bomber.

Maybe:

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Fleet Officer (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Major Rhymer (26)
Wingman (2)
Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6)
Cluster Missiles (4)
Seismic Charges (2)
Munitions Failsafe (1)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Seismic Charges (2)
Total: 100

Just put Push the Limit on Rhymer so he can focus and target lock for that APT. No extra baggage required, no crazy combos needed.

I'd rather use Major Juggler. He has a much better jousting value, and his pilot ability is pretty sweet.

"Juggy, can you give me a number crunch real quick?"

"32.33 - repeating, of course - percentage of survival."

...Does that make you Leroy?

In regular play, he is not worth it.

But in Epic, he definitely has a place. He is there to fire off Advanced Torps into the bum of huge ships. And he does it better than anything else in the game.

No.

This answer seems somehow... familiar.

PtL + Advanced Torpedoes says yes. Yes he is. I know it's expensive, but oddly once you stack enough ordnance on him he suddenly becomes worth it again, but too much and he's not. So far the magic number has been 2. APTs and Concussion Missiles. Even once his stuff has been fired (at pretty much whatever range you want), he's still a limit pushing bomber. Not too shabby.

I would love it if there was a Defender with this ability too. Range 2 Autoblaster, anyone?

Rhymer is the only one that can get APTs to work reliably so in that regard he can be useful. Of course two APTs and preferably PtL is damned expensive and probably not worth the points. He might be an interesting choice for the new Proton rockets.

I don't know about tournaments, but with PTL + 2 APTs and another missile, he's great in missions and epic play.

I had good luck with him with ptl, apt and assault missiles, teamed with Jonus kitted out the same way (and a doom shuttle). Was able to handle every list I faced except the dual firesprays that I couldn't seem to touch and that I had to fight twice.

I'd rather use Major Juggler. He has a much better jousting value, and his pilot ability is pretty sweet.

Never tell me the odds.

MajorJuggler is overcosted by two points.

If I only want to have a single bomber in a squad I'd go for Rhymer every time. Especially now that we have the Munitions Failsafe upgrade available. If the rest of the squad has secondary weapons you'd still be better off with Jonus of course.

Thanks all good advice.

Question now is what is a "Doom Shuttle"?

Doom shuttle = OGP Lamda with Vader on board, sometimes with an engine upgrade.

My space cows never leave home with out the engine upgrade :-D
