Discussion Board Criticisms/Negativity

By z0m4d, in X-Wing

Aloha, everyone. I lurk these threads every so often, but I notice a vast number of posts are either criticisms about the game (Wave 4, the art, Epic ships, Rebel love, Imperial love, shipping delays, etc) or proclamations of how FFG should re-design the game. Sarcasm and insults often follow.

Have the X-Wing threads always been so full of criticism? Are most game company discussion forums just as negative? This is all fairly new to me, so I'm curious to know. Thanks!

Most are worse. The internet is not a place for the easily offended.

Pretty much. :)

These forums are actually quite civil compared to many others I've had the misfortune of stumbling across over the years.

I've been lurking message boards on the internet since 1996. This is, by far, one of the more civil places I've seen. People keep it pretty clean here.

One nice thing about this forum,

Most of the people on here have families and are a little more mature.

You don't get the constant picking, whining, and insults that other sites have.

That's not to say that we don't poke a bit of fun now and then, and when we do its

Clean and good natured.

Don't confuse some of the long standing jokes here for actual attacks/trolling/flaming.

For example the "Reported" you see sometimes is just a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously. I've gotten into a few heated discussions here, but there's few people here I feel try to be offensive.

Honestly this is the most civil and friendly message board/Community I've been apart of. Which admittedly may say a lot about people on the internet.

It helps that the post itself indicates if it has been reported on or not. I got confused by that at first, until I noticed it was a joke due to the lack of "This post has been reported as blahblahblah" on the bottom

Well, I find it depends on whether we, as a player community, are having an off-day or not.

Any time I've come on here to make a thread to solicit advice on how to tweak a build, I have always gotten great feedback and suggestions. Often the threads go off the original point a little, but ultimately the discussion still is constructive and informative.

When I started my love affair with the Firespray, this was a great place to take what was originally my idea for a list, and get into the deeper ideas of how the Firespray flies, overall good combos for 1 or 2 Firespray builds, etc, and I have incorporated all of that into various games I've played with that particular ship.

What keeps me coming back here to start future discussions on list archetypes, uses for cards, etc, is that typically we can all go back and forth on the overall value of something in practical terms, and its civil. Nobody is going to call anyone out for being a newb for asking rookie questions that the veterans (if you can call us that for a 2 year old game) have figured out since the beginning.

I'm more than happy to help guide a new player into efficient buying decisions early on. We all take it for granted that 2 Core Sets are a must-buy, a 4 ship Rebel build containing some mix of X-Wings and B-Wings is a reliable tournament build, but we all came from a point before X-Wing where we didn't know anything at all, and I think it's great that our community can readily pass on this knowledge to help newer players get up to speed.

I played a game against a friend who recently got into the system, and I blew his mind when I showed him how the 1-Forward is the same size as a small ship base, and how you can suss out your forwards a lot easier, to avoid collisions, when you can math it out that way. Took me a lot longer than that before I got that piece of knowledge, and I wished I knew it sooner. Discovery is one thing, but when you go take a physics class in high school, they don't expect you to come up with Newton's laws on your own. They lay it out for you in the interest of time, so you can get to the real book learnin'

Sadly, it goes the other way sometimes, where people come on to rant about how they perceive the game to be expensive, usually because their background with miniature wargaming is non-existant (because they would know X-Wing is a steal in that market) or they just lack the business sense to appreciate why FFG charges a reasonable fee for the models, and the cards are distributed the way they are.

I don't want to open a can of worms by bullet-pointing the controversial topics here, but we all know what they are, and we don't need more threads repeating the information.

So fear not, fellow gamer. If you have questions or want feedback on list building, card storage, gaming chrome (custom tokens, asteroids, etc), this is certainly a good place to be.

I'm not sure of a place on earth that is exempt from Criticism or Negativity.

I see a lot of Positive things here that in my mind outweigh the Criticism and Negativity.

Hey, how about a Star Destroyer with Expert Handling and an Autoblaster?
