Secondary Weapon Usage

By SDCC, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This should be a nice easy question to answer! But we've had issues with it in our games so I've got to ask.

When using secondary weapons, do they use the same target range as your primary?

So if you have 360 on a YT, your missiles can fire at anyone in range around you? There were 'discussions' about how this doesn't make sense thematically as a YT's missile launchers are on the front, so how would it hit someone behind.

Cheers

Secondary weapons for a YT use the printed fire arc on the ship's base. You can't launch missiles outside of that fire arc.

Secondary weapons use your primary firing arc so your target must be in your primary firing arc to be able to fire the secondary weapon at it.

A falcon has a primary firing arc, but it can shoot at targets outside of it with its primary weapon only.

Oh right! So the front arc is for the secondary weapon, and the 360 is for the primary.

That makes sense! I did wonder why it was drawn like that. Thanks guys!

It is very important that you understand that no ship has a 360 arc - every ship has a defined firing arc, but turrets can fire outside of this arc. So ships like Backstabber will get the extra attack die if he is not within the falcon's printed arc, the turret does not mean that all ships are within its arc. Hope that makes sense.

So as long as Backstabber wasn't in front of the Falcon, and therefore in it's printed arc, its ability would still work.

The YT's primary weapon does use the turret though doesn't it?

Correct on both.

If you check the rules insert that came with the Falcon (or the recreation of it in the FAQ), it specifies that while the YT-1300 does have a normal firing arc, it has a primary weapon that may target outside of the arc. This is slightly different from actually having a 360° arc specifically for things like Backstabber and secondary weapons.

I don't own the YT myself so have never read the rules for it. I'll be sure to point his out John next time!

Cheers guys, big issue cleared up for us there.

No problem, that's why we're always happy to answer questions. Just wanted to let you know where to find the information we keep referring to in case you wanted to verify. The most recent FAQ also contains all of the rules information previously only printed in rules inserts/cards included with ships. It came out before Wave 4, so it doesn't have the cloak/decloak rules from the Phantom yet, but otherwise is a pretty good source. You can find the FAQ (as well as several other helpful PDFs) on the game's support page, here.

Why thank you. I think when my brother came along with the YT, thematic questions didn't line up with what we were seeing on the base. We just all thought 'crap 360!'.

No I'll be able to focus down the rotten smuggler quicker!
