My Dunwich board is cursed

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Seriously. Consider this: When I only had AH+DP+DH almost no gates opened in Dunwich. Entire games passed and no gates opened, and in the games gates did open, it was no more than one gate per game. I wished it would change, but I had little hope once I acquired BG+KH. I was wrong. From then, every game gates popped up at Dunwich, and a minimum of 2 gates per game. Suddenly I had everything in Dunwich: Gates opening, gate surges, gate bursts, Dunwich Horror awakening... I guess they were right when they said "be careful what you wish for." :) I have all expansions except KY yet Dunwich is impossibly active. How is that possible?

Happened to me too. The last three times I played with all expansions with my newer players, the Dunwich Horror awoke and Dunwich had three gates.

The previous league game with the DH board saw no gates opening in Dunwich.

However, my most recent game with no expansions there were no Dunwich gates. It's hit or miss, I guess. I kind of like it like that.

It's could be linked to a bad mix in the mythos deck, where you've got some chunks of Dunwich cards and then gaps with none. Then in the process of shuffling you might have just returned the chunks to the top and left the gaps at the bottom. I don't know, just a hypothesis.

What you could do is seperate all of the mythos cards into their own stacks (Arkham, Arkham Burst, Dunwich, Dunwich Burst, Rumor, Environment) and then put cards back on at a time while trying to keep the proportions decent. That's what I did and it worked really well for 10 or so games. I think it's about time I do it again...

This is a game built on bizarre coincidences and interestingly unlikely possibilities. Sure, it's unlikely that you'll draw three double doom rumours in one game, but that makes it all the more amazing when that happens, and you win by seals anyway. Sure, it's unlikely that you'll ever get Changed, or flip over a condition, or get Beloved of Bast, but they do occur. It's odd when a gate opens at Hibbs, Science Building, Historical, and Silver Twilight in the same game, but when they do, you know you're in trouble. Things happen. I've had a monster surge at Cold Spring Glen, for (Ashcan) Pete's sake!

End result? Maybe you should stop complaining about dilution in Dunwich and enjoy it.

First, I think all boards in AH are are cursed. It is the nature of the game! That and the fact that we are all doomed.

Second, what do you mean that no Dunwich gates opened in a game without expansions? How could a DH gate open if you aren't playing with the DH expansion?

I also don't see dilution in exhibit items. Every average game I see at least 2 exhibit items possessed by investigators. Only things that really aren't happening are corruptions and cult memberships.

Exhibit items are definitely more rare now. But I kind of like that, because it makes them more inaccessible and alluring, which counteracts their general "meh" factor.

Then there are the rare circumstances where having one is a relief. My gf declined to take one last night in interest of a Unique Item. Immediately afterward we had to deal with Clothing Drive. I let the "told ya so" linger for a while.

Could you imagine bumping into Cursed Relics without having any Exhibit items?

Plus there are 3 Elder Sign parchments in a deck of 22 Exhibit items, compared to 5 Elder Signs in a deck of 109. That's a 3-fold increase in the frequency of an "elder sign," which adds to the appeal.

I don't think I've ever had an EI when CR hit the table, yet I'm pretty sure I've passed it always. I don't mind dumping Unique Items for it. Since I do majority of my shopping at Curiositie, I tend to have stuff to dump for CR, tomes, missions, etc.

I don't usually have a lot of spares though. But Cultes Des Goules or some random mission is an easy choice.

BTW Just played another game with the rule, "if the card is not The Next Act Begins, draw again." It worked like a charm! The Three Acts deck became a real threat, even using all current expansions. I'm totally playing it this way from now on ;)
