Safe to leave in car? How hot is too hot?

By Salacious Crumb, in X-Wing

I think if you are even concerned at all that it would be too hot for them, just bring them inside. Granted I work with a bunch of software developer nerds who see my WHOLE collection sitting on my desk everyday and do not flinch. I am sure that there are some professions that this might not be possible.

Alternative: How much do you trust your FLGS Owner? I know my store's owner pretty well and trust that I could leave my entire collection there at the store or in the display case.

I once left a bottle of Ibuprofen in my car. I check on it after a summer of Living in NC and the thing melted into one huge ball. Something like a single 2000mg serving anyone.

Might have been worse, could have been a suppository. Tell me that wouldn't be a pain in the butt.

Who was it that said "I am the suppository of all wisdom"? I guess he meant 'repository' but w/e.

Plastic and heat is never a good mix. A friend of mine left some 40K models in his car one sunny afternoon (and it wasn't that hot) and when he remembered them, they were warped all over the place. I have a silver station wagon with dark tinted windows, and it still gets pretty hot inside during summer. Unless you can park in the shade or in a building, I wouldn't risk it.

He's got his head stuck so far up his butt....

I never leave any wargaming stuff in the car, not even books now. One of my newer GW codexes ($50 book) is now bowed and the pages can bend back and forth clumped together after I left it in the car for a couple of hours.

On a similar note, I've had multiple friends get their cars broken into and losing all their gaming stuff.

106 today, left my stuff in the car, in direct sunlight, but in the trunk. Nothing damaged. I don't foresee it being a problem.

The resin that the ships are made of is bridal, but strong. It will hold up to the heat in a car well. What you have to worry about are all the little things made of plastic. Your stands, bases and any plastic tokens you own. They are made of a softer plastic that doesn't tolerate high heat as well, as in they will warp. If you are going to leave them in your car on a hot, sunny day I would make two suggestions. First, cover them from direct sunlight. Sunlight kills plastic and over time can fade or bleach the models' paint. Secondly, crack a wind. Allowing a little air flow into your car will help keep the inside of your car at just about the same temperature as outside your car. Final note, if you don't mind bird crap on your car, park in a good shaded spot. Shaded areas can be up to ten degrees cooler on a hot day.
