Safe to leave in car? How hot is too hot?

By Salacious Crumb, in X-Wing

Thinking it would be nice to be able to leave my collection in the car during the day and head straight to the FLGS directly after work. My fear being that summer heat will melt the plastics. Has anyone left FFG's miniatures in their car during the summer? I'd be very upset if I get to the store after work to find melted tie's and warped x-wings.

I haven't had a problem. Just don't leave them in direct sunlight. Put them under a blanket or in the trunk and you're probably golden. At least here in Wisconsin. I can't speak for southern states+ but the fact you referenced summer suggests a northern clime.

My collection has sat in my car for a full day in subtropical australian heat 34+ degrees celcius, and I have had no problems whatsoever.

Cheers

My beautifully warped TIE Fighters would say that leaving them in a car for a few days in the North Carolina summer was not a good idea.

Apparently the winger thingies are supposed to be parallel...

Even just 3 hours on my back seat in San Jose, CA April weather around noon led to all my models being probably 90°F+. The wings of a few of my TIEs fell off due to the glue melting (fixed rather easily), but I found that the brand new sleeves holding all my pilot and upgrade cards had wrinkles and wear like they had been used for two years suddenly.

I feel quite lucky none of the models warped. As people have said, if you leave them in your trunk, or under your seat, with a blanket on top, it may be fine. But I wouldn't risk it. I have had too many Warhammer nightmares-come-true with even slight heat waves.

is it possible for you to bring them into your workplace and leave them in a locker or something?

So somewhere between 93 F and NC summer is too hot. I'm writing from Maryland so NC temperatures are not far off on some days. Based on the observed temperature readings I found on a site concerned about people leaving pets in cars I'd say the point to worry is the high 90's. Pushing the inside temp close to 120 F. I don't want wobbly winger thingies. (my wife would insert a that's what she said joke here). Looks like I just need to crack the windows and keep an eye on the forecast. Thanks for the quick replies.

Or just take them inside?

Beat me to it.

I certainly wouldn't trust leaving them in a hot car all day

I have left my stuff in the car boot on a very hot day during Summer in Brisbane. None of the ships were affected but the large bases sagged slightly (Not enough to make much of a difference but some of them are quite tight when inserting the ship cards). As a result I prefer to take my stuff inside and leave it under my desk during the work day. When I take it to events, I put it in the passenger footwell with the sunshield up to prevent it from getting too hot.

Edit: For reference, the bases were inside a Plano tackle box, inside a bag, inside the boot. If you must leave them in your car, I'd put them in the passenger footwell with a window cracked just a little bit to allow hot air to escape. That should keep the temperature low enough for most hot climates.

North Carolina makes me sad, for a handful of different reasons. :(

Plastic melts. I won't risk it.

Don't bother with those solar auto fans advertised to cool down your interior. They don't work...and cost as much as a new ship.

I'd never risk that. Cars get hot, plastic melts.

Long while ago me and a mate went into town and did some shopping before going to have a game of warhammer, he left a few models on the back shelf we came back for our stuff an hour later his wood elves were all wilting.

And this is in the UK, so I agree take them inside with you to be safe.

I've left my stuff in the car for days at a time, and it's all been fine. I live in southeast georgia, USA, with an average of 95 degrees during the day, in a black car that attracts heat. Just pop them in the trunk and they're good to go, only issue I've noticed is a B-wing's cannon was bent, but that was because I shoved 4 of them in a tiny little compartment more than the heat.

I've had mine in my car for 2 weeks now, but WI summer hasn't topped 85ish yet. Never in direct sun, and safe inside a Battlefoam PACK. I'll double check them today and get back to you.

Just checked on them. Now granted it's a cool 64 this morning, but no wings detached, no cannons misshapen, and even my card sleeves are unwarped. Anecdotal, but it seems the BattleFoam insulates pretty well.

I should add that mine are in Husky clear-top toolboxes in my trunk, and that my car is always in direct sunlight

I left some Ties in the car during an Orioles game (so, Maryland very specifically) and they survived without any problems. I will submit that I left them under the seat of the car because I never leave anything visible when I park in the city. So they were out of direct sunlight.

Living in Texas (where summer is usually 95*+ for 6 months), I never trust leaving them in the car. I figuratively melt when I get in my car if it has been left outside for more than an hour, I can only imagine what literally happens to any plastic. Personally I just bring my obnoxiously large carrier inside during the day.

:P

Well, if i knew what kind of plastics the ships are made off i could know. The problem isn't only "melting" but dilatation and elasticity. They are very unlikely to return to their previous form if they get to dilate.

This happens to those plastic bottles, and the plastic will also be more malleable, making it very hard to return to their original form because of the heat.

Anyways, as Aminar pointed out early on the thread, on the trunk you shouldn't have much trouble. If you can leave your car somewhere where it won't receive direct sunlight, even better (parking or under a tree makes wonders).

You can use hot water to bend them back. I fixed a ship that arrived bent.

I heard from a friend who used to run a photo store that the bigger risk might be to your cards if you've put them in plastic protective sleeves, which may melt and ruin the cards.

If you're asking the question, you should probably just bring them inside.

I once left a bottle of Ibuprofen in my car. I check on it after a summer of Living in NC and the thing melted into one huge ball. Something like a single 2000mg serving anyone.
