Deadeye, viable in Wave IV?

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

Originally, Deadeye came out, and it was terrible.

Then Wave III came out, and Deadeye + Recon Spec + Adv. Protons was a possibility on the Firespray (and soon on the B-Wing).

Also in Wave III, Deadeye was able to spread its cost over multiple pieces of ordnance for the first time on the Bomber and B-Wing (discounting the Slave 1 title).

Since then, we've had the addition of R2-D6, Ion Pulse Missiles, Flechette Torpedoes, and Munitions Failsafe.

R2-D6 means that the level 3 and 4 X-Wings, Y-Wings, and E-Wings can take the upgrade, meaning more than just the A-Wing can take it to forestall the lack of Target Lock due to pilot skill.

IPM and Flechettes are both cheap enough that sending 1 more point onto the ordnance isn't throwing good money after bad.

Munitions Failsafe means that every ship has a theoretically infinite number of ordnance slots, so long as they're terrible shots. And each turn you fire a missile/torpedo is a turn that Deadeye isn't worthless.

Has the worst of the 1 point EPTs been, finally, redeemed?

Deadeye has never been bad. It's much much nicer than using a target lock. Its problem is that Ordnance was already really meh. It works well on anything with Recon Specialist and ORdnance. Hell, it works well on Garven for an addition Astromech point because he can pass on the focus after firing his torpedo.

Ordnance has always been bad, so upgrades that focus on it are bad. And upgrades that apply to a single shot made are bad.(See why ordnance is bad)

Deadeye itself is just fine. It just needs to affect better things.

If high pilot skill lists become the norm, I like it on Blount with an Ion Pulse Missile or Assault Missile.

I agree that its great on Blount, after rebel aces comes out you can use it and PTL on GSP and Tycho. Other than that, I can't think of much of a use for it

It's the best thing to put on Blount for purposes of phantoms. Put a flechette torpedo on another with munitions fail safe and deadeye or just high pilot skill, and they will be locked down until they die.

Did not have this experience.

For a single point it almost always works. The ordnance it effects however... But that's slowly getting better now too.

The problem with deadeye wasn't the ability, which is pretty good, it was the lack of viable ships to put it on. Until recently there were only two choices: really expensive elite pilots that want a high-end EPT to justify their cost and can usually get a TL anyway, and an overpriced a-wing that you probably don't want in your list at all. Now we have a couple cheap z-95s that aren't a waste if you don't take predator/PTL/etc, and a 1-point droid that lets any cheap x/y-wing take deadeye. It's not an auto-include, but at least it might be an option occasionally.

I had this ship idea but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Kinda pricey at 48 pts though

Then, you just have to hope you miss

As others have said, Deadeye was never terrible, it just had a very small niche. It's sole purpose is to support ordnance use, and ordnance was not very cost efficient before the recent additions. Additionally, since most EPT carriers are already high PS, Veteran Instincts is usually a better buy for missile/torpedo use unless your meta gives you reason to suspect otherwise (Roark, PS 9s with VI, etc.). This means the best place for Deadeye is a low PS ordnance platform, and only one exists: Green Squadron Pilot. With Chardaan Refit coming, the room for Deadeye will be even smaller as most people give up the A-wing's missile slot for free points. Wave 3 gave Deadeye some new legs with Recon Specialist, particularly on Firesprays where it could potentially fuel two shots with Slave I. I ran the below on Vassal a couple times. It was more swarm hate than competitive, but it was fun.

Double Deadeye (99 points)
