Upgrades to Avoid

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

I'll add "Targeting Computer" but that is mostly because the only ships that can't take the TL action will generally be better served with other actions or Modifications. It may have applications on the Interceptor but doubt you'd touch it for anything else.

Excuse me? Slap that Targeting computer on Soontir Fel and tell me how bad it is.

Don't mock the power of Soontir's boost-to-range-one-then-target-lock-and-get-a-focus-free attacks

Ok, you're excused.

Most upgrades have a home somewhere. Now it might not be a large home or a good home but a home none the less. Slap that Targeting Computer on ANY Rebel ship and tell me how "good" it is. On the scale of usefulness the Targeting Computer gets a ZERO on 13 of 16 ships types produced; of the three remaining types you probably should chose one of the mods that come with the Phantom for it, you'll have a hard time convincing me it is worth going on a TIE Fighters, and that just leaves Interceptors (where you're excused for not seeing that exception mentioned) and even there it is far from an automatic add with most varieties.

On your Fel with PtL, Targeting Computer, and likely another modification the TC can be useful but by that measure Marksmanship is GREAT when used by HSF and possibly Corran and has uses for other pilots as well.

Every upgrade has a home. As long as there's a place for it, it's not useless, and if it's not useless, I don't see why we complain.

By that measure there really isn't an upgrade that can be complained about which means this entire thread is pointless.

When it comes to scope the Targeting Computer is at least as "useless" as Marksmanships, Autoblaster, and Blaster Cannon in that it can go on ANY ship but the number that may want it can easily be counted on one hand.

With Echo cards like Autoblaster and Blaster turret are proving to be viable as anti-Echo strategy.

Expose is great on High PSkill because you can get that extra dice which will destroy an enemy fighter before it has a chance to shoot back. Put it on Wedge and watch him tear up TIEs.

Marksmanship is simply a super focus that works on Attack dice only. The trick is to combo it with say Advanced Proton Torpedoes. Although this does make it seem like a one trick pony.

If you feel particularly aggressive with your TIE Phantoms you can give them a targeting computer. For their four dice attacks. Adv Cloak system is useful for the survival of your phantoms but if you're willing to take the risk the rewards might be great.

I want to try Autoblasters on a boosting TIE Defender, maybe even with Rexler. Use it to knock away shields and then switch to the primaries with a focus.

Expose isn't bad if used by Darth vader but for anything else it isn't worth it.

Expose is bad on Vader, and any advanced. You're paying an extra four points and your action every turn to switch to an X-wing statline.

Expose is outright bad. If you really want the extra die, use Opportunist or Jan.

FFG has done an excellent job of making this game rich and varied. Almost every ship is awesome in its own way. But there have been a few upgrades that I would pretty much avoid. Some because they are just bad (for their points) and others.

Marksmanship

Expose

Blaster Turret

AutoBlaster

I could make a case for all of these.

Marksmanship is FANTASTIC on Luke!

Expose is custom made for Vader.

While we all wish we could get the Blaster Turret to work on a Y-wing, it's home is on a HWK (and works quite well).

The AutoBlaster is situational at best, but Tie Swarms are still popular.

Marksmanship still costs 3 points on Luke for a small marginal change from the effectiveness of Target Lock, and Expose makes Vader into a 33-point X-wing with no pilot ability--meaning it's overpriced by about 5 points.

Depends if those TIEs are escorting Vessery.

Vader has a BUILT IN PTL w/ no stress, so Vader is really the only ship that can capitalize on Expose. (Same with Squad Leader) Luke's pilot ability causes the focus action to be a waste most of the time. Marksmanship is the perfect fit for him because of this. A recent Astromech that can change unused focus into a shield regen is also a nice fit on Luke.
