Smuggler's Alliance/Black Sun fluff fleet

By Ikka, in X-Wing

So I just purchased the starter box and an interceptor/z95. I'm looking to build a couple of fleets that aren't competition/meta but rather are more designed for fluff reasons. I was thinking that a Smuggler's Alliance or Black Sun fleet for the rebel force and thought that this would work (just picking ships, not a point list)-

3 X Z95

1 X HWk290

1 X YT2400

1 X Millennium Falcon

1-2 X Xwings

I don't ever plan on winning tournaments with this fleet, but I like the idea of a group of scrappy misfits taking on an actual Impie fleet and giving it a bloody nose. Thoughts?

X-wings seem too rebel, I'd go with y-wings. It looks fun.

Well, I have one X wing already, was going to justify it by it being flight leader for the escorts. Y wing is a good idea, semi-obsolete fighter that is pretty cheap.

I like the idea, but I agree that the X-Wings don't fit, because they didn't really get out on the market (IIRC). If you're not playing in an official setting, could you also add a Firespray to the list?

I'm new, what is the Firespray?

Boba Fett's ship.

True, that would be perfect. Does it come with any other pilots than the Fett?

Yes, Kath Scarlet, Krassis Trelix and the generic "Bounty Hunter". Kath lets you stress your target if they cancel a critical hit, and Krassis allows a reroll on a secondary weapon attack.

Awesome. Sounds like a fun fleet to get.

I also agree with the Y-wing suggestions replacing the X-wing.

Welcome aboard fellow Pirate!

Yar!

Yeah also just buy cool ships that you like, as Pirates can have just about anything in their forces. You can convert ships too.

:D

For the Firespray, the named pilots are Kath Scarlet, a pirate, and krassis Trelix, a slaver.

You could also toss in a shuttle, after appropriate repaint. The Empire was apparently not real careful about keeping all of them.

I would suggest doing a heavy conversion on the shuttle, as well as a radical repaint. Would break it off from the empire more as well as really drive home the makeshift nature of a fringe group.

And, of course, if you have no sense of aesthetics at all, you could kit bash together some uglies. ;)

Hello folks! First post here, and also new to X wing (Just bought it so: 0 games)

I do have a few suggestions on ways you could make your "independent" fleet. Of course this up to you and your gaming group on what will be "allowed" but here...

1) Repaint the ships to a base color other than white (rebs) or gray (Imps), like brown, green, or blue for example. Color will immediately change the "vibe" of the models.

2) Use the Firespray/Slave1 as a "counts as" model for the YT-1300/Falcon. Oh and do get the YT-2400 for sure fora pirate fleet.

3) If you have read the Rogue Squadron novels they fought some cobbled together ships made up of mixed Imperial and Rebel ships such as a TIE "ball" with a Y wing tail, or an X-Wing fuselage with vertical TIE wings on it. The conversion possibilities are endless.

4) Don't use the iconic ship models. No X wings, no standard TIEs. Just the goofy stuff like the HWK, E-wing, Defender, etc...

I hope this helps in some way. Enjoy!

I'd love to see some more smuggler type ships. T-Wings and R-41 Star chasers come to mind.

Thanks for all the help guys (and gals if applicable)!

I guess I'm seeing two-three lists that this fleet will run-

Smuggler's Alliance (Rebel ally semi-comp)

3 z95

1 X-wing

1 HWK290

1 YT1300 (just have to buy it, model is too cool)

2 Y-wing

1 YT2400

Smugglers Alliance/Black Sun Interdiction fleet (fluff but not house rules)

All from above minus the Falcon and X-wings. Might add in some more Hawks or Headhunters...

Black Sun funded pirates (House rules)

All from the fluff group plus the Lambda shuttle and Firespray, maybe with a TIE or two.

Since I'm going to make an Imperial fleet as well, I think a stark black and red shuttle paint job can work for both fleets.

I'd like to try it myself, but I really like the standard white with my imperial squads, and I dislike flying the shuttle enough that I don't want a second one. I might eventually get a second one to clip the wings down and paint to use on a firespray base.

I've never really liked the white on the shuttle, so a darker Grey or something like Kast's shuttle would be perfect.

An official pirate/ Black Sun faction would be very cool as well. There are a whole load of very cool ships in the EU that would be great for this. Cloakshapes, R-41 Starchasers, Zebras, Toscan 8q and the C-73 Tracker are just a few that come to mind. I would love to see FFG do these for a 3rd "Fringe" faction possibly with a couple more of the other freighters as well.

A recent significant thread on the third faction argument

In the meantime, Shapeways has a lot of options for you to do an unofficial pirate fleet, including he shops that you mention.

I think that these homebrew things should be encourage, understanding that they won't be permitted in tournament play. I wonder if we might get a good forum discussion going that could vet the homebrew suggestions so as to at least get community recognition for pirate fleet rules.

I'm sure there are already a bunch of home rules out there floating around this forum and elsewhere on the internets. We might want to collect them and compare/contrast what's out there.
