Please help me to understand the Legacy Era.

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So far only in the age of rebellion beta, are there stats for that. Hopefully FFG comes to their senses and removes the redundant blight that weg wrought.

While there may not be stats, the Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook covers the separation of the Imperial Army and the Stormtrooper Corps quite clearly on 369-370. On page 404, there is also another relevant line: "Stormtroopers are not part of the Imperial Army but are a separate corps of dedicated shock troops."

I'm not sure why you object to this division so adamantly. It's not like there aren't real world examples of multi-branch military forces (US Army and US Marine Corps being among the most obvious).

I object to it because outside of the rpg, no media shows an imperial army. Stormtrooper are like Jedi, one of the most recognizable elements. Every star wars video game set during or after the rebellion era uses stormtrooper as enemies.

Dark forces, Jedi knight, Jedi outcast, rogue squadron, battlefront, etc, etc. Thrawn didn't disguise himself as an army soldier, but a stormtrooper.

If you want to say that the storm troopers are protecting the important locations, that is fine, then the players should be important enough to warrent fighting them.

Also, if there can be specialized stormtrooper types for every situation, what does the army do? Where are they? Why are they needed?

My understanding is that the Stormtroopers are high-end infantry. Imperial Army has infantry (of a lower standard) and also has armor, artillery, cavalry (mechanized) and - most importantly - has support services. Stormtroopers don't have cooks, medical staff (beyond field medics), supply specialists, or any of the hordes of REMF that the Imperial Army (and Imperial Navy) provide. All members of the Stormtrooper Corps are frontline combatants.

Imperial Army exist to provide garrison troops and extra bulk to support the heavy infantry of the Stormtrooper Corps. Most planetside security will consist of IA rather than SC, excepting political targets (like embassies, Imperial Missions, etc.).

Stormtroopers don't need cooks and doctors as droids could provide that function.

I'm asking for examples in media, beyond the weg rpg, that show this invisible imperial army.

If you go to Wookieepedia, there are several sources listed for the Imperial Army page. Not all of them are RPGs, but I haven't had time to research them all.

Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare details the Imperial Army on pages 125-126. Page 131 of the same book shows an illustration of an Imperial Army officer working alongside strormtroopers, and page 142 shows what could be a recruiting pic for the Imperial Army.

AT-AT drivers and Scout Walker drivers are Imperial Army. General Veers was Imperial Army. They're out there.

The Imperial Army exists for the purposes of garrison and invasion; this is clearly detailed throughout the original Thrawn trilogy. If you want to dispute the words of the great Timothy Zahn, let it be on your own head that the Legends-canon hammer falls. Stormtroopers are amazing at assault and counterinsurgency, but are extremely ineffective as a garrison force, mostly due to their own reputation as ruthless, highly-trained killers. It's the same issue the jarheads and SF have in Afghanistan; deeply ingrained aggresiveness does not lend itself to peacekeeping operations.

Dark forces, Jedi knight, Jedi outcast, rogue squadron, battlefront, etc, etc. Thrawn didn't disguise himself as an army soldier, but a stormtrooper.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Dark Forces featured a number of Army personnel, as did Battlefront.

Also, I thought Thrawn was disguised as a Mandalorian? Jodo something-or-other?

General could very well be an honourific title in star wars. The Jedi had the rank of general, amd they often coordinated land and space battles.

As for general veers, he wears the same uniform as all imperial officers, except on hoth he has helmet and breastplate overtop of it.

There could be a vehicle corps, but the movies only show stormtrooper as infantry, and in a garrisoning capacity.

Dark forces has stormtrooper. Imperial officers and commandos for human enemies.
