Battle Foam's custom tray creator now has Wave 4 shapes.

Where? I just looked at all available Xwing trays and the custom creator and they have no wave 4 shapes available in either.

At least the next thing (Rebel Aces) just uses already available shapes.

I've always been tempted by BF and would be conflicted if they ever did the 25% off sale again but until FFG stops putting out ships (hopefully never) my PERSONAL choice has been to hold off since

1) atleast with Planos I can in theory sell them on craigslist or ebay and recover something.

2) Large price difference, I'd rather just buy more ships I have a more than one plano and still cheaper.

3) As speaking with mutliple BF users about half say foam is overdoing it and would rather have gotten plano(like) cases bc of #2 and durability of the minis.

Now #3 might just be the grass is greener talking and to each their own and again not saying I haven't thought about it but just my two cents and reasoning behind it.

A tray only holds so much. Just custom design a couple to fit what you have

How thick do you think custom trays should be to allow the depth of the defender?

1.5" thick should do. That's the depth for a tie fighter.

Actually I measured it out that it would be more apt to allow 2'' because of the cannon tips. The last thing I want is for the foam to buckle a little and damage the models.

Foam gives, plastic does not.

2" for an Imperial tray is perfect because the width of the Lambda shuttle is 2".

I just looked at the custom tray creator and the wave 4 shapes are not there yet. Also I got an e-mail from BF announcing a sale for the upcoming 4th of July weekend.
